Transfer portal / Image likeness and the future

Question for the more intuned fans,

It seems that transfer portal is having a huge impact on college teams - see our qb transfer and ofcourse the much recently possibly but probably not injured but questionably may be Fields, Justin.

With the recent Justin shorter transfer, and the new rules of athletes be able to make money, I feel like this will benefit Michigan.

1. Michigan has a winning program.

2. Brand.

3. Since some teams are stacked, players may transfer to good but less stacked teams. So for example OSU has too many high ranked athletes and some high athelete may feel like going to Michigan may be a faster route to playing time.

Do you guys forsee teams like Michigan "catching up" in recruiting this way ??

I know Michigan is doing a good job but how Michigan got Danna and may be can snag a CB or DT that way and keep Fielding great teams ?

Go Blue! Beat OSU!

You want guys that couldn’t break the depth chart or are passed by younger guys at OSU to play for Michigan? That doesn’t sound like it’d be too successful. Transfers should be the exception. You can maybe get some depth guys that way, but if those guys are starting here that’s a problem. Grad transfers from lower tier teams are about all I’d see helping.

I agree but look at how Mike Danna, a 5th year senior has benefited M. Or Shea Patterson.

I mean there has to be a quality starterish guy that M can get based on its brand and winning record to fill in depth and need.

I'm trying to see if folks think this becomes a bonafide strategy.

But neither of those guys were buried on depth charts. They were starters at their programs. If a guy can’t play at another program, it’s a pretty big indictment on your recruiting and roster if he can start for you. That’s not a recipe of a sustainable strategy to me.

No 4th corners are playing time transferring to be 3rd corners.

And your Keith Washington mention is a perfect example. He would have been the 5th corner last year and wouldn’t have probably played meaningful snaps here until this year, as a 3rd corner. So he left and was a full time starter on a lesser program.

Michigan's transfer targets shouldn't be five-stars who get passed by other five-stars at OSU. They should be guys like Danna, 2-stars and 3-stars who blow up at smaller schools. Recruiting is an inexact science, and there will always be plenty of guys who didn't get significant offers out of HS but proved they can hack it in college.

Exactly...get a kid out of the MAC or Sun Belt who wants to showcase his skills at a higher level.

I think you can take the 5* kid who was passed in certain circumstances. But if you're looking for depth. Give me the guy who's proven himself.

For example...next year? We need to get a 2* CB at a MAC school who can come in and be a solid #2 or #3 behind Ambry Thomas.

But we also could use a 5* rush end who got passed over who has the potential to replace Uche while he learns how to be a more complete DE.

Lol, totally wrong take. Great players get passed regularly. You wouldn’t love to have Fields? Eason? Hurts? Kyler Murray? Kamara? Shit, Baker Mayfield? Terrible take. It’s clear that this could benefit us greatly. I’d say probably more so than grad transfers. Most of the best players are gone by their 4th year, more often 3rd. But grad transfers can be effective in filling voids on the roster (Danna).

Me in HS:

Me: (has locker next to one of the popular girls, seeing that her and a friend are blocking me)

Her: Uh, what are you staring at?

Me: I’m just, tryin’ to get to my locker.

Her: (walking away) That guy is so weird.

Sparty Crush: (walking with her) Oh, him.

Allowing to “pay players” indirectly (come to Michigan and we will put you in a car commercial paying $100) is going to be huge for Michigan. Most teams that kill us in the recruiting rankings are already doing these under the table payments. So allowing Michigan to legally do them is going to be a huge boon in recruiting.

It would be interesting to see if opening the floodgates of personal marketing created opportunities for universities such as ours to get players that before might have been either out of reach or less inclined to choose Michigan as a destination either at the beginning or later on. With schools that have the reach and budget of Michigan, it may very well.
