Tom Penders: Shots fired at Warde Manuel and the search firm

Submitted by 1201 on May 21st, 2019 at 11:21 AM

Ward Manuel using Gene DeFilippo to help Michigan find a basketball coach?!! He got pushed out at BC for firing Al Skinner after Skinner brought BC to the top of the ACC. I like Ward but DeFilipo is the reason that BC fell into hoops oblivion since Skinner got canned! https://t.co/Sae7t62ECi

Remember, Michigan search is being run by Gene DeFilippo (Now at Turnkey Sports) — who was the AD at Boston College when Ed Cooley was an assistant and the Eagles had it rolling. Cooley was at BC from 1997-2006 and DeFilippo was the AD from 1997-2012.

This is very interesting and explains why Cooley is near top of list. https://t.co/ZoElNsiAKT

Interesting? Nobody in their right mind would try to follow John Beilein! Bob Driscoll is a super AD and a man of integrity! Hard to find today. DeFillipo is a moron and Ward's only hire at UConn was Ollie! The 2 of them together? Ed would be nuts to even think about going there! https://t.co/Sae7t62ECi

Of course he has better job security at Providence. There’s no doubt about that, but there’s no comparison between the two jobs. Michigan is a Top 10-20 job nationally. https://t.co/wHnPEFb8Zb

That's basically what "Bolivia" was, a temporary....err....semi-ban, where your points were removed and you had to go through the stupid CAPTCHA thing to post. There was also locking accounts too, which could be undone without the need to reset everything. Fortunately, there is a version of this functionality in this iteration of the site.

Just promote Yaklich and have him carry the torch.. the dude can coach, it has been proven..he can recruit with it, too..  Cooley can only recruit and it has been shown he cannot coach at a high level.  I cannot believe Warde is gonna be allowed to hire Cooley over Yaklich.

YAKLICH  ELITE COACH  2nd in kenpom on D  IN THE NATION... it wasn't Beilein, whatsoever, regarding the defense.

OR  hire Howard. He would be elite recruiter..the coaching is a risk, but its an unknown.. Cooleys is known.

My goodness...

His connection to this guy running the search, probably, I think that is what this thread and a couple of the tweets indicate.  It certainly isn't because anybody independently has said or thought that Ed Cooley is qualified for the Michigan job because I haven't seen that.

My prediction:

Warde interviews Howard, offers him the job, but make a ridiculously low offer and Howard turns it down.

Warde then moves on to Plan B (which in reality has always been Plan A) and goes after Cooley.  And after getting turned down by Howard he decides to up the payscale some to ensure he doesnt lose Cooley.  Afterall, Ed has experience AND was highly recommended by the search team.

Cooley is hired.

Board melts down.

So you think a Michigan AD would give a courtesy interview to a former player where he winds up alienating the former player with a lowball offer? To the point where said former player says "? I'm coaching in the pros" and we wind up with some nobody from a mid major leading a revenue sport? That would never happen!

We don't know what the extent of the engagement with the search firm is. Could just be for vetting the list Warde gave them.

Warde will be judged on the results and rightfully so but your approach of throwing him under the bus for each perceived process mistake without knowing much of anything about the actual process is absurd.

If the hire is a miss it will be because Warde made the wrong hire, not because he worked remotely from Africa or didn't text Beilein enough or engaged a search firm some people on Twitter don't like the head of.

I'm not him but I will give my opinion.

I think that we should offer the job to Juwan Howard at a reasonable price.  He is a qualified candidate.  The lack of head coaching experience is a hole in his resume, and a significant one, but certainly not a prohibitive one given his other credentials and his connection to the school and the fan base. (factors that I think are very fair and smart to consider).

If he does not take the job, see if Yaklich would accept a two-year deal.  I think he would be crazy not to.  If he succeeded he would be riding high, if he failed he would still be a highly sought after assistant.

I don't think the decision should be both a drastic change, and have a low ceiling.  That is what the Cooley hiring looks like to me.  The results that Cooley brings on his first contract will not be meaningfully different than Yaklich would.  In hiring Yak, in the worst case scenario, you have not made a complete regime change while picking from very limited stock so late in the game.

Although I think Yak would be good, his experience is lacking

It would be a bad look to give him the job over the other 4 candidates who are all more qualified than him and are also black. It would not look good at all

Sorry, but imagine how hard it is, as an assistant, to get the players to do what you want them to do... he got the team to skyrocket from triple digits to 2nd in nation in kenpom.... THAT is proven experience enough, to be able to take the next step as head coach.

No, we just saved the embarrassment for after he was hired.

What he is saying does have a lot of validity.  Everything, seriously everything, says Juwan Howard right now.  If we hired him the national response would be "that is a really good, really exciting hire."

So of course we would instead hire the coach of the last place team in the Big East.... cuz reasons!  (or lack thereof!)  (Either one!)

That is just how we do.

It's not.

Beilein quit 8 days ago. Since then, Warde Manuel began searching for the new coach. He's still interviewing candidates. They hired a search firm called Turnkey. This is what they do (https://turnkeysearch.com/current-searches/job-board). This is literally all we actually know about anything. The rest is fan-fabricated lunacy.

Tom Penders doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. He's not even close enough to the situation to spell Warde Manuel. The only reason this dumb shit has made it to the board is because it was posted by our resident dumb shit.

Penders says in that 2nd tweet that Cooley shouldn't go work for "those two", or however he states it. DeFilippo doesn't work here. He works at a search firm whose job it is to assist in job searches. That shows the level of knowledge Tom Penders has about the topic - none. Ed Cooley is an actual, interested, semi-successful, experienced college basketball coach. That's why he's being considered.

I swear, for 5 days everybody bitched about how Yaklich and Howard don't have any college experience. Well, this guys does (as underwhelming as it may be) and 1201 wants to paint it like he's some old boys club back-door hire.

That's idiocy. Ed Cooley, like it or not, is actually the most qualified candidate. And Tom Penders is a 73 year old on Twitter yelling at clouds. As usual, good post 1201.

-------------------------

I'd like to know, if anyone wants to answer, why this is considered some shifty Gene DeFilippo operation with vague ties to Manuel?

Why isn't more being made of, ohhhhhhh I dunno, the fact that DeFilippo's boss and the motherfucking Founder/President/CEO of Turnkey is a goddamn Michigan graduate?

To be honest, I have not really seen that many people bitch about Howard or Yaklich's lack of experience.  I have seen the fan-base grow very supportive of a Juwan Howard hire.

I just don't think a lot of people see what Cooley, specifically, brings to the table.  He has no Michigan ties, no BIG "footprint," has had no NCAA tournament success, has seemingly squandered considerable talent, and would not likely retain any assistant coaches from the staff.

There is some lunacy here.  Michigan is not going back to the "dark ages" with a Cooley hire, but I can understand some fan wrangling here.

I get not liking Cooley. I'm not wild about it either. But we don't have much to work with. Beilein's timing put us in a bind and there is no Chris Holtmann sitting around waiting for us. And I've got a read another idiotic 1201 post painting this as some conspiracy so he can shit all over Manuel.

I probably edited since you replied. Turnkey's CEO has an undergrad and law degree from Michigan. Do you think MAAAAAYYYYBE that has more to do with their involvement than some incredible reach of whoever the hell Gene DeFilippo is supposed to be?

And Yaklich/Howard's inexperience has been lightened the last couple days as everyone realizes they're the best we've got. But go read a post form last week when fans though we could get Billy Donovan. Those two were hammered for their lack of resume.

Yeah I don’t get the Cooley hate either, he literally seems like the perfect John B replacement. Did Brian say not to like the guy?

Brb, gonna hire a guy with no head coaching or recruiting experience, lol.

X’s and O’s, good recruiter and continues to get to the tourney at the perennial powerhouse known as Providence. Seems to top underrated coaching lists.

Should we criticize Beilein’s lack of deep tourney success and meh recruiting at WV before he came to Michigan?

This is not a shit show. You have one poster who is a known troll posting incessantly with links to people in the media whose income is tied solely to generating controversy, real or imagined. This creates panic in the echo chamber that is MGoblog and makes it feel like a shit show. In reality, our coach left because he no longer wanted to deal with the BS that is college hoops, bolted, and we are conducting a search to find his replacement. I prefer that search to be thorough vs expedient.
