Time to finish the Battle of Toledo

Submitted by sdogg1m on

Maybe it is time to finish the battle of Toledo!

For those of the uninitiated or unaware of why our rivalry with Ohio State is so intense; the rivalry existed prior to the creation of football. Seeds of animosity between our two states were planted as early as 1787. The results of the Congress of the Confederation created what was known as the Northwest Territory. The Northwest Territory comprised of what is today Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and our beloved Michigan.

In 1802 due to the economic significance of the Port of Miami (not that Miami) and the Maumee River, the delegates of the Ohio Constitutional Convention deliberated on the northern border of Ohio. If the extension of the border was even from east-to-west using the southern tip of Lake Michigan as a marker then what would become Toledo did not belong to Ohio (we had claim to it).  To counteract reports and guarantee that Maumee be established as a part of Ohio delegates voted on a provision that added the watershed into the northern border. The creation of the Erie Canal also added to the prosperity of Toledo.

Michigan assembled a militia of 1,000 strong and the conflict intensified to the point that the scoundrel President Andrew Jackson was involved in order to protect Ohio’s interests. Yes, we ended up benefitting with our admission into the union and a compromise that granted the Toledo strip to Ohio and us the Upper Peninsula but our conflict has remained unsettled and lives on in this football contest.

If football matchups transcend integrity and decency from the Ohio perspective then maybe it is time we up the ante and remind them that the only reason that the state exists is because Michigan entered a compromise. Ohio can’t rely on others to protect them from their unethical practices forever. Whether it is stacking a claim to Toledo and as far north as the Detroit River (I kid you not) or shielding a wife-beater; this filth must eventually be purged. To arms!

I would go with an old-fashioned amphibious landing in Sandusky. Our boys will come ashore and capture Cedar Point before they know what hit 'em. We can use that as a beachhead to attack East to Cleveland and South to Columbus. We then complete a flanking maneuver that ends in a full envelopment of Toledo. Patton and Bo would be proud!

Good homage to root of our rivalry.  Add to that our modern day differences.  One is a world class university that also happens to have the winningest football program in history.  The other is a win-at-all-costs football program that happens to have "the" university attached.

Perhaps.

You have seen the response. Chanting profanities against Michigan following the ruling. Zach Smith's lawyer blaming the victim. Those that want to kill the messenger McMurphy.

Even in the "punishment" doled out by the University much of the response has been centered around their obsession with us.

Long term view, I would think, is this:

We got the Upper Peninsula and the revenue from copper and other ores.

They got....Toledo and revenue from....oh....Tony Packo's.

As a Toledo native, I would be all for Meechigan getting Toledo. That would make us the second largest city in the state instead of fifth and maybe we would get these streets fixed.

John Quincy Adams commented that he had never seen a situation where one side had all of the right (Michigan Territory) and the other side had all of the power (the state of Ohio).

P.S. Indiana took land from us too...defeat Ohio then turn on Indiana!

P.P.S we already had the eastern third of the Upper Peninsula beforehand.

Does Wisconsin get Chicago back for the same reason?  Everything north of the southern tip of Lake Michigan once belonged to Wisconsin territory.

An undefeated season for the Michigan football team would go a long way to healing all wounds.

And yes, the response from stephenjrking was impressive and quick which makes me wonder what else is ready and loaded in his mind.

The outcome of the Battle of Toledo was Ohio got Toledo and Michigan got the UP.

Big win for Michigan.

I will  be very happy if our future battle are as successful
