The Tigers went 2-1 in Cinci to open the season and are playIng their first home right now vs the Royals right now.  It’s currently the top of the third and the Tigers are winning 5-4.

NY Giant great Mel Ott who was born in 1909 in Louisiana.  When he was 14 years old he started playing semi pro baseball.  The Giants had him for a tryout and signed him in January of 1926 at age 17.  He went directly to the big leagues that year and was a regular by the  age of 19. Hit 511 career home runs while standing 5’9 and weighing about 170.

He was a player manager during the 40s and was known for his laid back style. He was the subject of the quote “Nice guys finish last”.  Although he was the first manager to be ejected from both games of a doubleheader.

After retiring the Tigers hired him as a television broadcaster in the early 50’s.  He was replaced after 3 seasons by George Kell.  Who coincidentally suggested to the Tigers that they should hire a broadcaster by the name of.....Ernie Harwell.  So in a way you could draw a line from Mel Ott to George Kell, to Ernie Harwell.

....and no you know ...the rest of the story....good day.

I had the great pleasure of growing up in extreme Northern Indiana-5 miles from the state line. Listened to George Kell and Ernie Harwell on WKZO in Kalamazoo most every game. So, for me, they are they standard by which all baseball broadcasting is measured. Their knowledgeable, objective broadcasting was and remains unequalled.

I see that they are running the Arby's promotion again, where three home runs gets you free curly fries.

Not that I can eat those on the cardiac diet, of course, but hopefully, they actually get some folks free fries this season.

Hope they give #6 a proper tribute when they can. Comerica should be packed for that.

They even make a bad team like the Royals look good.  Lets see KC was about 3 years behind the Tigers in rebuilding. I would say they're now several years ahead of the Tigers. Tigers have done a poor job with the draft and their minor league ops.

More frustrating is that KC got a WS title after years of a painful rebuild, while we had one of the highest payrolls in baseball for years with Cabrera, Verlander, Scherzer, etc and no titles to show for it. I honestly don't know what was better. Summers were fun, but the Fall sucked.

The 2013 team probably is one of the most talented teams ever to not win the World Series. Every single position player had been to an All Star team. The pitching staff had JV, Scherzer, Anibal, Fister and Porcello. No excuses for that team to shit the bed in Boston like they did
