Is there anyone on our staff you'd like retained if we got a new coach?

Submitted by 285matt on December 1st, 2020 at 2:40 PM

Yes, this is another post about coaching changes.

If we were to get a new coach, would you want a whole new staff? For instance, if Matt Campbell were hired, would you want him to bring everyone from ISU over? This didn't really work out for Frost at Nebraska who took all of the UCF staff with him, but I do believe there should be some sort of continuity if/when a new head coach comes. It does look like much of the ISU staff has stayed with Campbell from Toledo. There are only 2 or 3 from the UM staff I like at this point, Warinner, Moore, and maybe Jean-Mary.

Maybe it's good that Harbaugh and Brown don't typically lead the recruitments of players. If position coaches that have been making headway in recruiting for 2021/22 get retained, I wouldn't be opposed. Whatever we can do to retain as much from the 21/22 class as possible.

Purely speaking in terms of coaching, Warriner is the only coach that seems consistently great in both development, scheme, and recruiting.

I still have faith that Gattis can be a very good to great OC and even a head coach at some point. Has Harbaugh been taking control? Is Gattis just not that great? TBD

Wouldn't even consider keeping anyone. Most position groups are a mess and there are zero ace recruiters on the staff. Gotta be somewhat decent at one of these things.

Quite honestly, no.

I want this entire thing blown out from top to bottom, including coaches we deem as good.

A new coach should have full decision making- if he interviews Warriner and respects his history and decides to keep him, fine. But if not, that's cool too.

This whole thing needs to be cleansed.

Warriner. Easily. His track record speaks for itself, this year notwithstanding, but he lost both of his starting tackles mid season and that’s going to devastate any offensive line that is not located in Tuscaloosa, Columbus, or Clemson.

He’d get a mulligan. I’d also be tempted to give Gattis another shot, as long as he got assurances that the head coach would not meddle in his playcalling. Let’s be honest: while this may be Gattis’ office, so many plays have Harbaugh‘s fingerprints planted all over them. If he is not retained, I hope he’s given a fair chance with someone hitting the reset button for him.

You know, I've thought about this a bit, and although I am almost certain that we're probably going to still be talking about Harbaugh next year this time because that's the administration we have unfortunately (of course, they could shock me still this year), if Harbaugh were to leave, I would be tempted to sit back and see if whoever it was saw anyone worth keeping. In other words, I am fine with a clean break, if it came to that.

However, like others, I am kind of interested - if only for a moment - to see Gattis sans Harbaugh and what that playcalling is like. They certainly wouldn't leave us with him as HC in a scenario where Harbaugh is gone, but there is some academic interest on my part in seeing him unhindered by Jim.

It's hard to separate these things sometimes.  I love listening to guys like Brown, Warinner and Moore in their interviews.  I like them.  But the performance on the field doesn't justify them keeping their spots.  I would favor a clean sweep.  Warinner would probably be the favorite to keep, but he just had 4 guys drafted, two of which are starters in the NFL.  With that line, Michigan should have been plowing through other teams at will.

I don't get all the praise for Zordich.  With the talent that has come through Michigan in the past few years (Lewis, Hill, Long, Thomas, Clark, Stribling, etc) they should have been at the top of the Big Ten in INTs.  The last couple of years, the CBs have played more like MSU's - one of the more penalized groups in college football.  They're too talented to get consistently beat, but they do more often than not.  Remember Jourdan Lewis's incredible interception against Wisconsin?  He was beat deep on that play.  A better thrown ball and that's the game winning touchdown.  I see a ton of fundamental mistakes from the DBs and believe they have been getting by on talent alone.  If Zordich does not recruit well, then he shouldn't be coaching at the college level.  The entire defensive backfield should be under one coach.  Dax Hill is probably the best player on the team, but he needs to be coached.

Not only do I feel that Warinner would be the one I would want retained, I'm actually gonna see it as a mistake if he's not.  Others who I wouldn't mind keeping are:

Sherrone Moore but for recruiting coordinator only

Zordich provided we bring in a dynamite recruiter for defensive coordinator

Josh Gattis provided he is made a co-coordinator so he can learn from another good play caller

And I may be ok with Jay Harbaugh taking over tight ends.  He had two years to ruin Jake Butt and didn't.  Plus the others on the roster seemed to improve at the time.

But if I have to pick one, I'm picking Warinner in a heartbeat.

Ed Warriner has the track record of one of the very best in the business across multiple schools. And his recruiting at Michigan has been good. That an injured and very young line isn't great this year takes nothing away from that imo. Definitely try to keep him

Keep Don Brown and insist that he run some of that zone trap stuff he ran back East.  I really don't think he got stale unless recruiting is the issue.  Why are we off-sides so often?  Mattison looks better than ever and maybe Jim should have let him offer a few more players. (Why do we have so many kickers that are regressing?)

Zordich - great history but what about Gray?  Aren't corners the issue this year? (other than beef on the d-line.)

It all seems to point back to Harbaugh more than the assistants.  Maybe some day we will see a crisp two-minute drill for the win

I love people talking about needing to change the culture, but then hoping to keep a few coaches from this staff. Talk about a complete disconnect.

The answer is nobody. I don't care how good Warriner is as an OL coach (and it is the toughest position coach to find). If you want to really change the program and the dynamics, you start by firing EVERYONE. Keep a low-level GA (preferably someone the new coach is familiar with) or someone who can help you find the bathrooms (and give you a lay of the land). Everyone else goes and I mean everyone: coaches, GAs, recruiting assistants, social media people, reassign administrative assistants--everyone in the building has to be someone the players don't know. That's how you START to change the culture.

Warriner for sure.

Wouldn't mind it if they kept Moore (good recruiter)

Also, people aren't going to like it because of his last name, but Jay Harbaugh has done a sneaky good job.

I say we take off and nuke the entire staff from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be adverse to keeping Warinner. But the incoming HC will do what he does.

We need a DL coach.  We need a LB coach.

The thought of Gattis as interim is intriguing.  if he beats OSU a legend is born.  If he doesn’t you hire Campbell.

Also what about Robert Saleh?

No not a whole new staff. Juwan kept Saddi which helped keep some continuity, so I'd try to replicate that again.

Whoever gets along / gets the most respect from both the players, contacts with '22 kids, and the new HC... Balance but maximize those three sides.
