Put Rico Beard...who I enjoyed on 105.1...together with his brother Rod Beard (Pistons beat writer) and call the show The Brothers. They teamed up one day on 105.1 when Ermanni was off and they were great. Funny, not too in love with their own voices, a bit edgy and a bit competitive.

Another idea...put Rico Beard (a State guy) together with Sam Webb. THAT would be fun.

Detroit sports talk is just bad period. Glad for Foster but he was one of the biggest reasons it sucked. Cool personality but didn't want to work hard anymore. (Even before the strokes) UofMs own Karsh and Sparty Scott the Google Anderson, literally Google their info 10 mins before the show. I get why they spend so much time wondering what Gator did on the weekend or what's the best Halloween candy? It's because neither of them watch sports outside of the local teams. Gator still doesn't know what WHIP stands for in baseball. Stoney probably spends the most time watching sports as all. But the guys jokes, and sense of humor is not for me. Kind of creepy. I was glad when they replaced McCalister for Jamie, knowing the mornings hearing about Bills old bartending days in Hamtramck or how callers are idiots are gone. With Jamie, at least the majority of the show is sports takes and interviews are back. I do miss the promotional games Bill would play though. (The price is wrong) etc.. winner of a weingartz toro snow blower here:) thanks Bill and Stoney. Anyways as for the golden child of Detroit Sports talk. Michael Valenti. I guess I get his success. But he's not without flaws himself. There is no doubt he is the Kobe Bryant of the studio. And basically what he says goes. As far as replacements for Foster, wouldn't be shocked to see Riger get it. No way Mike will work with Wojo fulltime. Personally I think 97.1 needs to go after Baligian. His voice is a bit annoying and he's pretty repitive. But as far as drive and sports knowledge. There's nobody better than Sean in Detroit. That's including Valenti. Other options Kyke Bogie - not ready and Mike wouldn't put up with his sex takes all show Dan Leach - the fanboy lunatic would make us laugh but no way Mike goes for it. Gregg Henson - never would happen but could you imagine? Valenti needs someone he can control and won't make him look bad. That's why I think in the end it would be Riger. Lame...

If you ever put Valenti and Henson together, you'd need to go hide in a bomb shelter. Even so, Henson would be gone within 6 months to find another venture. He doesn't stay in one place for very long before burning serious bridges.

I've never liked Samuelson. I've always thought he was a whiny pussy. Caputo is a blowhard who couldn't find his ass with both hands.

As for the rest of the guys, I have no opinion. I turned Detroit sports radio off almost 10 years ago, haven't looked back, and haven't regretted or missed it.

consider my predicament: over here in SW Michigan, it's either The Huge Show or Chicago sports talk. For a city as big as Chicago, it's simply amazing that the best that either sports radio station has to offer is the nasal, whiney voice of the otherwise somewhat-tolerable Tom Waddle, who used to play for the Bears. If not for the nationally syndicated shows of Dan Patrick mid-morning and Rich Risen in early afternoon, I'd be listening to music 99% of my drive time.

When the show first started out as the Sports Inferno on 97.1 it was absolutely phenomenal. They were a solid combo for a long time. Valenti when he was younger really had a passion for not doing the typical hot take theater, dumbed down version of sports radio. Valenti obviously isn't spoken highly of here, but 10 years ago he was really great at his job and Foster was a perfect compliment. listened to them religiously. Last few years it's been pretty bad. Terry was never the same after the stroke, and Valenti seems resigned to doing typical sports radio. I barely ever turn them on anymore. They had a good run.

It's not about his takes and absolutely the ratings are still good. For me personally, It's about typical sports radio in general is for morons. It's the low hanging fruit, full of hot takes, idiot callers, and hosts using the same shtick to get people "fired up". Valenti was different when he started, the show was different, they would refuse to do that garbage and complimented each other very well. New management came in a while ago and changed it all up, made them do more traditional sports talk.

Valenti is abysmal and treated Foster horribly when he came back. It was uncomfortable to listen to, Valenti giving Foster grief for issues that seemed to be because he wasn't 100 percent healthy.

And I don't know how else to say it.

Foster couldn't even communicate common knowledge about the teams happening. The stroke had a massive impact on his ability to remember and understand things occuring in the world of sports.

There were massive pauses in his speech and a lot of what he said made zero sense. Valenti picked on him because they are basically work brothers. He didn't pick on him because of his stroke.

I haven't listened since the stroke but this wouldn't surprise me. Foster's article explaining his decision doesn't say this specifically but it's clear from what he says that he is different from before the stroke and that it is harder to do.

Keep in mind that Lee Corso came back from a stroke to continue to do Gameday, but he contributed tightly-produced pieces of analysis 15 saturdays a year, rather than a much harder three hours of commentary and debate five days a week. And Corso was visibly affected himself.

Still remember like it was yesterday, Valenti saying no way the Lions should sign a QB with a bad shoulder (Drew Brees) big time money. A year later after Brees signed with the Saints and putting up record numbers. Valenti saying "if the Lions would have signed Brees like I said they should do" man I couldn't believe it. Not to mention about 15 mins ago on his show. He said that before he was hired on to work with Terry, they wanted him to work with someone else but he said NO! Lol go over Detroitsportsrag.com and take a look at Valenti from when he signed with 97.1. And tell me how that dude could say no to working with anyone.

I hate to be that guy but Foster always came off as a bumbling buffoon who had no real sports knowledge. Also his writing was borderline unreadable. He had been coasting off his connections for years. I wish him the best of health but I won't miss hearing him stumbling through a hockey or Tigers topic. Also Valenti knows his crap is crap. He just plays the angry anti-M character for ratings, IMO.

Valenti rarely made good points and when Foster had a stance opposite of Valenti he would be questioned about it then change his mind.

The only good radio talk show that was worth listening to was Zaret, Gibson, and Danielson. At least they knew what they were talking about - the rest are pure garbage.

I liked those guys when they had their "Locker Room" tv program after Sports Final Edition on Sunday nights. The banter was good and they're all smart guys, and so the quickly rotating topics worked.

So I was excited when they developed a radio show. But... it didn't work. It was virtually unlistenable. Zaret never seemed to enjoy what he was doing, a lot of the show wound up being Danielson pontification (I say this as a guy who thinks Danielson is a great color guy, but when he gets a stage and just starts talking, it can be insufferable), and whether Gibson was on set or not there wasn't much chemistry.

I tried, I really did, but I couldn't keep tuning in. I went back to Fithian and occasional helpings of Stony and Wojo.

Apparently, I wasn't alone. Which is why the show got cancelled pretty quickly.

My one real contact with Foster came years ago, after a tire killed four fans at the US 500 at Michigan Speedway (I was 50 rows up from where it happened. Didn't really bother me at the time, though now the idea that I could have been in the wrong place would be pretty haunting). He had attended the race as a reporter and gave a take that I felt was incorrect on television that night. I emailed him about it, and he responded cordially and somewhat reiterated his position with some support that he had spoken to some people in the paddock on this.

I appreciated that.

On the radio scale, I don't really miss radio in Michigan. It doesn't sound like something that I would enjoy listening to. And, as much as that may relate to my changing tastes, I would still enjoy a good show like Fithian in the afternoon on TKA.

The guys here in Minnesota are pretty good, and Dan Bareiro in particular does a good job bringing on guests who know the sports they cover and not overdoing the call-in hottakes. He overdoes the "radio cynic" role a bit, but who doesn't?

When I was in LA there was one good show on KSPN (Mason and Ireland) that they quickly blew up for no reason, and then reformed in a different slot within a year because the replacement programming was so bad. It was actually pretty shocking how badly the stations were programmed for the size of the market that they had.

As the years went on I stopped listening to V and F, especially after the strokes becuase Valenti and Sullivan seemed like they were basically goading and bullying Terry from time to time. However, I come from the bias that 97.1 as an entity is a garbage excuse for sports radio. I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking but for being the only major sports radio station in a city like Detroit and THIS is what we're given? Ridiculous.

Brian chapman is the best 97.1 has to offer. I like him at late night because that's when I listen, but he deserves prime time.

Chapman is terrible--just a total troll and not even effective at disguising that. The pairing with Jeff Lesson works well for him because Lesson is so ignorant of anything other than his golf commercial show it highlights the sports knowledge Champman has.

It's interesting to me that so many UM fans listen to Valenti and Foster. For me, sports are a diversion and something that is supposed to be enjoyable. I can't imagine why I would listen to people talk so poorly about something I love. Valenti seems to want people to think he "tells it like it is" but the reality is that he is just a troll. I don't gain anything from listening to that.

After 105.1 changed their format, the competion was gone. It's not only Valenti's fault being a D.B., but the stations program director is lame too. One day after 105.1 was gone, I called in the station after I listened to four hours of discussion of "Pokeman Go". The ass wipe that answered the station phone told me that I could change the station if I didn't like it !

Shortly after Valenti showed up. Foster

tried to be impartial but Valenti hates michigan with the

heat of a thousand suns. I think he knows the Sparty party

is over in football and he has tried to distance himself from MSU football.

He is a candyass fair weather fan and I'll enjoy his misery going forward.
