Tampa Bay Times: Feds investigate UF's handling of accusations against Antonio Callaway

Submitted by LLG on

"The University of Florida is under federal Title IX investigation for its handling of a December 2015 sexual assault accusation against star receiver Antonio Callaway, the complainant's attorney confirmed," reports the Tampa Bay Times.

The allegations also implicated quarterback Treon Harris.

The outside lawyer that the school picked as the hearing officer is a Florida Gators booster and a member of the school's Hall of Fame.  The woman and her lawyer boycotted the hearing.  Five witnesses also boycotted the hearing.

"The case stems from a sexual encounter at Callaway's residence in Gainesville in December 2015. The university received a complaint and began investigating a month later. Callaway was suspended by the school during the investigation and fully reinstated before the start of the 2016 football season in September.

"Clune said his client's goal in filing the complaint is to help Florida correct some of its procedures for the sake of future students in similar situations. Clune and the woman have not ruled out the possibility of a Title IX lawsuit against the university. The Times typically does not name victims or possible victims of sexual assault."

"It seems like one of the crazier things we've seen, and yet I would have to believe there's smart people at the school," Clune said. "I think we want to talk to the school a little bit and find out how something like this actually happened before we decide on anything else."

Callway's attorney, Amy Osteryoung, pointed out to the  totality of the investigation "which is over one thousand (1,000) pages will do that for us."

Happy to change it if people want it OT.  Here is the definition:

http://mgoblog.com/content/whats-topic-whats-topic

I've gotten some questions on what's OT and what's not OT. General guidelines:

ON TOPIC
Michigan sports (obviously).
Big Ten stuff, or stuff about future opponents.
Meta posts about the blog itself.
University & Ann Arbor-related items.
Major collegiate news: Tim Floyd resigning is on topic.

SORT OF ON TOPIC
College sports in general... at your discretion.

OFF TOPIC
Things that are obviously off topic.
Pro sports.

I say this as one of the mods, let's be real about this - the people that cannot fathom the place during OT season probably have already gone into lurker mode, so the odd mislabeling or lack of labelling really doesn't make or break anything around here. As I recall, the thread which asked for assistance in expressing a dog's anal glands may have not had the right tag. Actually, there are weeks where it might even be META in the doldrums of July.

"Lurker" would be correct. Since this is the off-season, I'm just one of the few that are looking for good Michigan news. This was just a confusing article on what this has to do with Michigan. LLG is a great poster, so this wasn't anything against him. Just a confused reader looking for something interesting during the off-season.

LostPatrol14:  First, thanks for saying I'm a great poster!  I was genuinely happy to change it to OT if people thought so.

My two reasons for posting it are that it involves our first opponent this year and could have some impact on their team.  The other reason is that it touches on a topic that is going to be discussed for many years as schools try to figure out the balance.  By way of background, litigation by male students alleging sex discrimination during sexual misconduct investigations at universities or colleges has significantly increased over the last five years.

These lawsuits have been filed in the aftermath of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issuing a “Dear Colleague Letter” in 2011 stating that sexual violence in schools is a form of sexual harassment prohibited by Title IX. Then, in 2014, additional guidance was issued and the White House launhed the “It’s On Us” initiative, an awareness campaign to end sexual assault on college campuses and created a White House task force.

I sincerely hope that this never affects Michigan football. I was very happy that Harbaugh was proud that there were zero incidents on the trip to Rome.  But these issues are going to affect the Big Ten -- I would think that is just a matter of statistics.

And, to give an opinion, it does smell funny that Florida appointed this lawyer to be a hearing officer.  If the other party objected, just find someone else.  I'm sincerely shocked that they did that and now they are being investigated, which is not something that easily happens (or so I think).
