Swim Lanes - 1/20

Submitted by alum96 on

Brian's Monday missive on recruiting a week and  a half ago was so mind bending it is difficult to figure out at this point the # of lanes.  We had been working with the Lorenz "27" for about 2 months; now it's potentially up to infinity.  Or slightly below.  Or maybe 30.

Below are swim lanes - main changes from last are

  • Added an OT row - there was no such row in the past, it was Delance or bust.  But with Swenson talk and gap in the class without Delance and potentially Swenson it's a huge unknown.
  • Added a 2nd LB row - If Uche is a LB to you the pool of LBs is suddenly potentially 5.  But not really as Jackson is expected to stay south (suddenly Texas is back in heavy for him - getting him and McCullough...both UM favs...would be a nice haul for Strong)
  • Added a DT row
  • SPS indeed did exit creating 1 new open lane, but even with that I still added 3 more exit lanes with (1) Swenson (2) Nate Johnson w/ Notre Dame charging and (3) Dylan Crawford in case that Oregon dream offer still holds sway now that McDoom spot is open.  Hopefully the 3rd is not probable but just listing it.

Notes

  • The most sure things in an unsure world seem to be (1) Long - announces tomorrow at 6 PM ESPNU. (2) Allen - I believe a sleepover with Harbaugh tomorrow nite after a weekend many expected him to commit, (3) McDoom as Oregon pulled a Hoke and pulled offer when he wanted to visit UM, (4) Hudson which has seen an avalanche of ballz post visit, and yes PTSD Michigan fan (5) Gary.
  • Flipping Dwumfour also seems likely.  But I dont believe he has an offer yet.  So sort of need 1 before the other.  Unless #Harbaugh?   Seems like game plan here is "Go for Boss; if fail - make James Franklin cry."  Any plan that makes Franklin cry is a good one. Except if MSU flips the top RB in the class from Franklin - so don't make him cry that one time.
  • OT situation is a bit worrisome - a low rated recruit and a top 100 guy we did not make a recent top 6 for are the options (??) and latter has 2 officials in line to places not called UM.
  • WR situation is all over the place.  Johnson walking seems 50/50; will Oregon come calling to Crawford and will it matter;  McDoom went from Oregon committed to UM lean within days; is there room for Stewart and/or Pie.  Pie seems to be in the class as long as there is room on NSD?
  • LB situation seems to have a lot of players involved but in end maybe its just Jones as a new face?  He vistis Duke and uhh UCF...but seems to be ND v UM.  (Cutcliffe can't close!)  Dublanko seems like a slow play fall back option - Mbem-Bosse seems like a tough pull out of the South.  He might just be visiting UM for the weather and chicks.  Simmons is a big safety so maybe like Gil is a future LB at next level? But no official set to UM.
  • Swenson seems out, Enis seems Indiana, Weaver seems Temple, and Johnson is a cone of silence.
  • It appears UM and Washington will split the Long/Levi battles - should know both within 36 hrs.  (I believe Levi is today - could be wrong)
  • MSU making up ground on Hill - so who knows at this point.  PSU seems distant 3rd.

All I can say at this point is that NSD can't get here soon enough.  There is more intrigue this year than I can ever recall.  I don't know if that is the national trend or if it's just new to Michigan, but there are too many balls in the air for some to not fall our way this time!

Webb put in his 'gut feeling' for Deumfour, so he seems really really likely unless something weird happens. Also Oregon appears to be liking for another DB to replace McDoom, so Crawford like doesn't get a look there.

It is 100% that Swenson is gone, so the Staff must have a replacement in the fold.  We can only hope that he has equal or more ability and loves M as much as Swenson obviously did.

Backup to Gary is Tagaloa / Dwumfour

Word is Oregon is likely to go after defensive help and not try to replace McDoom with Crawford.

I believe Kaleke Hudson is in front of Jordan Fuller due to his versatility.

According to the MGoBoard post about Swenson, that has now been deleted, it appears via twitter he committed to Iowa State.

Well there is no backup to Gary.  He is a top talent you get every 3 years so if he is not in the class no one is replacing him.  He is the one guy who is not positional as you can tell my column #1.

Well I am glad everyone loves Hudson now as much as I did a month ago.  But I think both are very talented players and unless you are in the UM war room no one really knows who they like "more" if they could only take 1 - Fuller is a very talented player as well who has positional flexibility just the same but there is only 1 column.  Nothing to really change there - I think they want both and would find a way to take both.  Hudson is the easier get as we were competing mostly with Pitt and PSU (UCLA in there too I guess). OSU is the leader on Fuller so was always going to be a more difficult get.

If I had to guess, I see the following players being added to this class:

Gary

Dwumfour

McDoom

Allen

Long

Murphy

Pie

I also expect that we will lose Enis, Weaver, Swenson and N. Johnson.  So, we would still have a few open spots, likely for another LB (even a lower rated guy), another OL (again, unless it is Price, likely a lower-rated guy), hopefully Nordin and hopefully a surprise big name that nobody is expecting.

Overall, setting aside the massive size of this class, the quality and distribution of players is very good - not elite, but very good.  At the skill positions, we have a highly-rated QB who looks like he can bar Harbaughed into an elite QB, a highly rated RB, and if we get McDoom and Pie, while holding Crawford, three very well regarded WRs.  The class is also loaded with a number of "Harbaugh Athletes" who are capable of playing anywhere from RB to WR to DB.  Obviously, we also have a few very good pure DBs in this class, and at least one highly-rated LB (Bush). Finally, if we manage to add Gary, we will be bringing in a verty well regarded group of big uglies on both sides of the line.  The only areas that still need to be filled in my opinion are another LB, an OG and an elite TE.

Remember, many of these kids that we are going after have long-standing relationships with coaching staffs of other schools, so Harhaugh has a lot of ground to make up.  I expect that if we have another successful year, our 2017 class, while smaller, will have a few more elite players.

that Hudson is NOT a back up to Fuller. I don't even think the coaches have the two kids pegged for the same position. One is a true safety, one plays exceptional in the box. Hudson might be my new favorite player in this class, assuming he commits!

I have not heard that and he has not commited to Cal last I checked which was the assumption.

Immediately after the decommit Sam said they'd go after him again but not in any urgent matter and only if there was room late.  So maybe that chance today is only 10%.  So I have him in a MISC category - dont expect him in the class but I guess if 2 other people fall through it might be someone they go after in the last week.

I have wondered, since we are talking swim lanes, who is the Michael Phelps left out there? The first to commit, the best athlete, the greatest need or the highest rated? What say ye?

I have a question about Gary. Why is nobody talking about Bama as a threat? Bama has a higher Crystal Ball %, and an article from 247 about the top uncommitted prospects said that Bama was close while Michigan leads.

Without looking specifically at his case you have to look at the age of the ballz as well.  Esp for those high level recruits.  I bet he had a bunch of Bama ballz maybe 12-18 months ago or something and they just remain out there.   You see cases like that where a guy who was an early favorite somewhere still has those hangover ballz from a long time ago.
