Strength by The Beast - Coach Herbert's influence being seen
"Days after the Michigan football team lost its Jan. 1 Outback Bowl game to South Carolina, Devin Bush, Jr.'s cell phone lit up.
It was a text message from an unfamiliar number with an uncomfortable question.
"Who is this?," the text read.
Bush, admittedly annoyed by this point that an unknown number reached out to him asking that question, soon found out who was on the other end.
It was Ben Herbert, Michigan's new strength and conditioning director. And he wasn't there to just introduce himself. He wanted Bush and his teammates in the gym.
"I'm like, 'Coach, we just got off a game,'" Bush said. "'We need rest.'
"He's like, 'Nah, there ain't no time for rest. You got a lot of things to accomplish with your team, (and) yourself. Let's get rolling.'"
"Everything that we did was completely new," said Bush, who enters his junior season at linebacker. "Lifts we had never done before, variations running-wise, field work that we had never done before. It was all new to us."
Three months in, the new staff seems to already be paying dividends. Earlier this week, defensive coordinator Don Brown, directly crediting Herbert and his staff, marveled at how fast his side of the ball has looked through three spring practices.

Did he tell everybody to "get swoll" and "jacked" and "drink more protein shakes"?
They chant "Kill the clown" during deadlifts

How much additional protein do you get out of eating one child?
March 30th, 2018 at 12:34 PM ^
Depends on nationality. American kids tend to have a higher fat-to-protein ratio. Chinese kids have a much higher protein content, but after you eat one, you're hungry again within a few hours...

It's true. Sharks hate eating Americans because of the fat content.
You sound fun
LOL but he's right. We've been hearing this with each strength coach since Rich Rod but I happen to be a believer this time around.

we do hear it, but it's one of the most important coaches for a program. They spend more time with the players then the coaches do. Speed and Strength are obviously huge for a program. Most of the top teams are very close in talent and the difference can be how good of an S&C coach do they have.
Also since they spend so much time with the S&C coach that personallity actually carries over to the team so it is a huge part of a good program.
I think we have a very good one now. I was never much of a Tolbert fan and I think Herbert will help improve the entire team.

We haven't done any proper winning since he left, so let's bring back the longest tenured S and C coach in Big Ten Football history.

I CHOOSE to be a believer this time.
Can't say that about the past few. Tolbert seemed like a "comfort" hire after JH couldn't pry the Stanford s&c guy away. Sorry it took 3 years to make a move on s&c & OC, but in reality 3 years has only become a "long time" in the past decade.
Blame/credit "social media" for society's becoming you can call it impatient, or call it demanding the best.
I choose to believe too, after seeing Higdon in this interview clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xV1ALWXTRE
But only if we get to see them outdoors. We'll never be able to distinguish precisely what shade of yellow--yes, screw you all--yellow, the shirt is, or whether the finish on the helmet is eggshell or matte.

MAIZE!

No, screw you!
Michigan is NOT the "yellow" & blue, it's the goddam MAIZE & BLUE!!!

I never understand people complaining about stories or thread that they DON'T HAVE TO READ....
I like reading pretty much everything related to the team as we get into the spring eventhough I know much of it is coach speak, fluff and BS...but its a voluntary choice that I make.
Now if anyone take issue with these stories then..you know skip over it, click the back button, read a magazine, go for a walk, call a friend, put on some disco and dance around the room...whatever. OR I guess you could just continue to complain about stories you "care less about".

Gary put on 8 lbs of muscle...288 now holy shit

While I know UM has many resources, I'd be surprised if the strength staff is using a dexa scan. They are likely using bioelectrical impedence, body fat calipers, the good old fashion scale, or some other similar means to measure body weight and body fat percentage. Those will give you an indication of how much fat free mass a person has gained as well as measure changes in body fat percentage, but fat free mass is not only muscle. It includes all mass that is not fat. That is a common misconception. So, it's unlikely they can with much accuracy tell you how much muscle an athlete has gained. Also, things like bioelectrical impedence and calipers while good for tracking trends might be upwards of 5-10% margin of error when assessing the accuracy of a single reading of body fat percentage. So, take those numbers with a grain of salt.

Pretty sure all he was saying is that 'he was listed at 280 before and is now 288.'
March 30th, 2018 at 12:35 PM ^
Gary put on 8 lbs of muscleAnd those are two different things.
I think it goes back to the roster over analysis that all weight gain is good weight and all weight loss is bad weight.

Don Brown is happy with the muscle gain of the players, especially of Kwity Paye. Kwity Paye is very dedicated, very focused. Can't wait to see his improvement.
Me too, he looked great as the year went along last season. I was surprised by how quickly he was able to get meaningful snaps. But, I'm still hopeful we can see Luigi healthy as well. He was one of the guys I was most excited about in that class. Getting them both on the field at the same time once Chase & Rashan leave would be great to see.

The D was already strong & fast - not that being stronger/faster wouldn't be great!
I wanna see how new s&c (and O-line coaching )impacts the OL, where we really need it!!!
Go on, keep fluffing me
Coach Herbert is Sweet Brown.

Yes, I have seen this song and dance many times before as well. I am totally tracking with you, but I always enjoy the irrational optimism of spring.

Plenty of people were disappointed that Harbaugh didn't get the Stanford guy, instead landing on Tolbert.
