Spring football practice

Submitted by umbig11 on

Quiet day for the most part. The focus was on technique and repetition at the skill positions. The OL had too many moving parts to get a feel for 1's or 2's etc. The backs and recievers had a lot of one-on-one coaching moments. This seemed to be more like a day of conditioning, coaching, and learning. Walker returned, but seemed to be limited a bit. Newsome was still out, but more than one individual said he will give it a shot in the fall. No other ijuries were reported. The only real highlight appears to be Patterson and his ability to escape and make big plays. I think every UM fan either expected that or wants to hear it. You can't put too much stock in that when you are only 3-4 practices into spring. There is so much talent roaming the LB corps. They are going to be fun to watch. There isn't a lot of new information here, but it was just one of those slow days that will get them ready for the next mini scrimmage.

All the buzz is about Patterson, but what's the word on Peters and McCaffrey?

Is Peters showing signs of his time last year sinking in and him growing from it?

Is McCaffrey still on a good improvement line?

I'm neutral on hearing about Patterson improvising well. Nice to know he can do it, but we already kinda knew that. The best reps for him are the reps that he spends learning the offense, the calls and the reads, and executing them. He'll have moments to make something happen, but his ability to run the offense as designed is going to be key if he's the guy in the fall.

I think it’s telling that Harbaugh didn’t mention Newsome at all in a recent interview with Sam Webb where he listed all the tackle candidates. I’d be shocked if he came back at this point, and even if he does come back, it just doesn’t seems realistic that he can get back to his pre-injury form and compete for a starting job. A shame because he’s obviously such a great kid and had so much promise as a player. It really was the one injury this team could least afford. Set the program back terribly for going on 2 seasons now.

It has still only been a year and a half since the injury, one that was catastrophic. Harbaugh said publicly that he's working out but not taking part in contact yet, but fall seems like a reasonable time to take a shot. My guess is that he'll take a medical if he can't go then, but who knows. I wouldn't be stunned if he took a medical after spring given our scholarship situation.

Yep, the one the team could least afford... and you'd think the coaches saw the risk and had made him wear a brace... and then followed up by LTT leaving, and Drevno's whiffs.  Epic fails.  And it wasn't unexpected, to be where we are now at T... for people bitched about it the entire time here, and were proven right.

feel good story, but don't expect him to actually make it back as a starter. It's impressive the guy can walk and still do football related activities, but play LT in the B1G, is probably not in his future.

"It is a fact of quantum physics that one thing cannot be more played out than the other. Being played out is an absolute state. Thus, nothing that is played out has any playing on its own. Continuing to play a thing that is played out brings negative energy into the world, which eventually leads to black holes" (Hawking, 2007, p. 344).

For Peters. I'm guessing never. Hopefully Patterson this year.

Then if he goes pro, it will be a battle between Dmac and Milton next year.

If Peters doesn't win the spot this year, he should consider transfer options.

If he doesn't "grow" this year, then when?  He's playing under the tutelage of the greatest QB whisperer on the planet (or so it's said).  How many years would you say it should take before he's a topnotch starter, if he's ever going to be one?  4? 5?

will be given a chance. Why would his chances be curbed? But the competition is stiff. It's the best 3 QBs in a long time. I don't think he will be 1st or 2nd string, though.

I’m hoping Patterson does not have to escape very often to make plays. Rather see him protected in the pocket “all day” picking and choosing who to throw the ball to after much deliberation. Go Blue!
