Southern Miss announces Art Briles not a candidate for OC
Good for Southern Miss in realizing that they should not employ Briles. Jay Hopson, USM's coach (Former UM LB coach) made his own statement:
"I have interviewed Art Briles for an assistant position @ Southern Miss & I believe he is a man who deserves a second chance"... "He is a man that seemed sincere & humble in his interview & personally he committed no crime. He may not have acted in the proper protocol, but that should be my JOB at Southern Miss! He was interviewing for an assistant position, even though I believe he will be a Head coach at a Major Program in the near future."
I believe in second chances but I am not sure why anyone would think Briles deserves a chance to be a coach at a public university.

I feel there's a decent chance he ends up at Liberty eventually

Read that Hopson actually interviewed Briles without notifying the school. Apparently some big boosters were pushing for Briles too. School found out and said that ain't happening. Then Hopson posted that statement. Sorta disingenuous for a guy with Briles baggage to not clear it first (Edit: - and then bitch about him not being hired).
I thought Briles was coaching football in Europe. Or am I thinking of Quick Draw Pitino?

Both Briles and Pitino are coaching across the pond. It's a soft landing spot for scum bag coaches.

That was the big piece of the story to me. Why would Hopson think that he could just slip this move past the school and the public? Briles is toxic and will remain so. I was just glad that the school had the decency to make a statement and take him off the board immediately.

Hopson is an IDIOT. He learned nothing about class, character or decency while employed at Michigan.

Briles is a true scum bag, but if he is going to coach again I would rather it to be as an assistant/coordinator role. No way should he be in charge of a team ever again.

I hope Hopson never comes here. He sounds awful

Briles should never be allowed to coach kids again at any level. He failed in the worst ways possible. His only hope of ever coaching again should be in the NFL.

Because clearly putting Briles in the NFL, an organization with a solid handle on issues related to violence against women, is a good idea.

I didn’t say it was a good idea.

Jay Hopson's move here is usually the one that ends up with such a person on the short side of the dreaded Friday afternoon meeting in the boss' office.
February 6th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
Yeah: Hopson has put together 7-6, 8-5 and 6-5 seasons at USM.
Which is alright, but hardly the heights USM has had under some other coaches.
Perhaps a coach with more success could get away with that move, but I think Hopson's out by EOW.

Yeah, that's my reading as well. Who in their right mind thinks interviewing Briles without telling anyone is going to end positively.
February 6th, 2019 at 4:33 PM ^
Briles should never coach again, anywhere, period. And Hopson is a scumbag for pulling this move.
February 6th, 2019 at 5:02 PM ^
Art Briles should be the most unhirable coach in college football, maybe in all of sports. Hard to think of someone less suited to be in charge of anything off the top of my head aside from Engler.

Good. Doesn’t deserve a job

This part, from Hopson, is what gets me: "...& personally he committed no crime."
The crime he committed was against women, and against everything the church is supposed to stand for. If the county prosecutor had a shred of balls he would have found some charges for that entire chain of command, from the school president down to whatever assistants handled the phone calls. Of course, he would have also had to include the school and local police departments.
The corruption ran deep...

People keep acting like Briles deserves a second chance, like him collecting $15.1M and not going to jail doesn't count.
He can rot in hell for what it's worth to me, but people need to stop acting like he's suffering.
