SIAP - Deja Vu (and not the Ypsi gentleman's club) 20 years later, Glenn Robinson hits a game-winner in a Michigan/Purdue BB gam

Didn't see any reference to this in previous postings, sooo....
As if last night's finish wasn't insane enough, Glenn Robinson III's game-winning shot came almost 20 years after his father Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson hit a jumper to lift Purdue over Michigan in Ann Arbor. In both cases, a one point margin of victory.

I like III's a lot better than Jr.'s...

Could you guys imagine how good Purdue or Indiana would've been if they could have kept Irvin, GR3, McGary, Spike, and Garry Harris home? A huge reason why they are both underachieving and why M and M-State are atop the conference.

I'll agree with you about Irvin, Robinson, McGary, and Harris, but Albrecht wasn't on ANYONE'S radar. He had one actual offer - Appalachian State - and according to articles, only smaller mid-majors were even talking to him. IU and PU were not looking at Spike.

By that logic you can knock GRIII off of that list as well.

Purdue and IU weren't biting.

He ended his recruitment well before he started shooting up the rankings. But both Purdue and Indiana had filled up their wing spots with commitments as well. So I don't know if they ever would have offered.

Crean would have found a way to mess it up. But yeah, the state of Indiana has produced an amazing amount of high-quality NCAA talent in recent years. Funny that Purdue and IU both have missed on so many of them.

Holy balls.... a Purdue lineup of Gary Harris, Brendan Dawson, Zack Irvin, McGary, Spike, GR3 and random Johnsons? That'd be a top 10 team, easily.

If anyone is curious (I was anyway), the archive does have at least Michigan's statistics from the game in question. Juwan Howard went 13-19 and hit 1-2 from the stripe to get 27 points (no threes), and Jalen went 4-17 (0-5 from 3-point range) but 5-6 from the line. Dugan Fife started and Olivier Saint-Jean saw some action in the game as well. Overall, we went 37-68, but only 4-20 from 3-point land. We also outscored Purdue in the second half - 47-46.

So we were 33-48 inside the arc? Wow.

I was at that game... big dog was a monster... little known fact is that he said he'd have committed to michigan had he known howard and king committed, as he already committed early to purdue... its often been said that ray jackson was the outlier...had big dog replaced ray of the five times fab five, i think that'd have got them a title.

If we had gotten Big Dog, would that have discouraged Webber from committing? Or was the Ed Martin money the determining factor? We'll probably never know.
February 27th, 2014 at 6:28 PM ^
Martin wasn't specifically a U-M guy for most of his money-laundering days. He was a street agent who loaned money to many basketball players from Detroit. It was only after Webber (and Perry Watson) got here that he became more associated with our program in particular.

Damn, rough night for Jalen. Hoisting up a three when you're up by one with 35 second left, and then ,on the same possession, thowing the ball out of bounds with 10 second left to give Purdue the ball and, subsequently, game. I'm sure I watched the game but I can't say I remember that horrible sequence.

...and in 2054, Glenn Robinson V's last second plasma torpedo will elevate Michigan over Purdue by 1pt at the Mackey Intergalactic Spacedrome.

Fun fact: There is a deja vu in Toledo. I pass by it on Byrne when I drive home from the medical campus.

They're apparently all over. I heard an ad for one in Kentucky last weekend. It was conventiently located next to a WalMart. I bet there were some high quality ladies (and clients) in there.

Here's the last 2:30 of that game. It was a similar situation (except that Purdue was much better back then): it was late in the season, Michigan was in the driver's seat for an outright Big Ten title (they had already beaten Purdue in West Lafayette), and Michigan was in control for most of the game, but they collapsed down the stretch. This loss coupled with the season-ending loss to Perry Watson's Northwestern Wildcats team cost Michigan a Big Ten title. I was 14 years old and I remember it well.

Ricky Byrdsong was the Northwestern coach. Perry Watson coached U. of Detroit.

D'oh! You're right; brain fart.

I was really happy for that young man last night. To do it where he did it, makes it all the sweeter.
