Share Your OSU Stories of "Class"

Submitted by A Lot of Milk on December 12th, 2021 at 7:56 PM

Slow day on the blog, so I wanted to add a discussion topic. There's been humungous uproar from the cooler poopers that Des was taunting Stroud at the Heisman ceremony last night. OSU fans claim this to be the most disgusting display of disrespekt ever seen on television.

So to provide evidence to the contrary, please share your stories of OSU's lack of class in recent years. I'll share two:

1. Most obvious and most comparable story is Kirk Herbstreit LAST YEAR saying on national TV that Michigan "waved the white flag" and chose to not play OSU when over half the team was infected with COVID. Kirk would prefer to risk the health and safety of not only Michigan players, but OSU players as well, so they can help make up ground against Michigan in the all-time series. To OSU people, inferring that unpaid (at the time) college students wimped out of a game in a pandemic is much less offensive than ribbing a QB that his team got destroyed in the only game they practice for 24/7 and the one in which they base the entire personality of the school around. Additionally, a group of OSU people came up to AA after the cancelation and painted the rock with messages saying we gave up and didn't want to play them.

2. More of a personal anecdote, but in the week after the 2013 OSU game, I attended a Michigan-OSU hockey game in Columbus. During intermission, the scoreboard played a clip art-quality video with a name to the effect of "Timmy's Weekend." The slideshow showed poorly-drawn images of a little boy at Thanksgiving on Thursday, decorating a Christmas tree on Friday, and on the slide labeled "Saturday" they put up an image of Devin Gardner on his back on the field after missing the game winning 2 point try in the OSU game. As everyone here knows, Devin Gardner put up one of the best performances in The Game history in 2013, throwing for over 450 yards and scoring 5 total TDs on a BROKEN FOOT and falling a 2-point conversion attempt short of beating an OSU team that was 23-0 under Urban Meyer at that point. An Ohio State university employee mocking an injured college athlete who played one of the best games of his career and who nearly single-handedly upset an undefeated, 16-point favored OSU team is something I'll never forget and is why I'll never feel bad for Michigan giving aOSU a taste of their own medicine

Tell us your stories, and Fuck Ohio

On mobile so having trouble posting screenshot but it’s some OSU students making a reference to the flint water crisis on one of those bedsheet signs they hang in front of student houses

Maybe the most despicable example of all. I’ve seen multiple variations of this joke at Osu too. One including “I’d rather shower with flint water than at Penn State” which is just a doubling down of having no empathy for human lives

Laughing at the misery and lifelong-pain of a generation of Flint citizens who have no connection to the university in the name of a “rivalry” is evil

Never seen a Michigan frat house make jokes of the state of Ohio’s opioid crisis

I kind of think the mob of drooling, drunk assholes in the stands that scream every vulgar obscenity imaginable at the other team, the other fans, the cheerleaders, their own team (when they aren't winning).  kind of set the bar for "class acts" in Ohio.   It creates a nice family atmosphere for those that bring their kids to a game.

Couple threads down. Zach Smith. Toxic, shameless ball of self-entitled Buckeye bluster. Blames everyone but himself for burning through five lifetimes worth of second chances. And still has the support of many loudmouth wife beating truck drivers from Ohio.

OSU and their fans really are such a group of whiny pussies.

They dominate a rivalry for 2 decades, get every officiating call and break (injuries, lucky bounces) in that time and proceed to burn UM jerseys, talk of “hang 100”, and mock Harbaugh and the program.

UM eats all this shit, as it’s a rivalry after all, and despite OSU building a semi-pro team with institutional advantages, we go out and destroy them this year.  Game wasn’t even as close as the score…they got hammered…out-willed, out-coached and looked softer than charmin.

1 loss and  some rivalry banter the other way and they lose their collective sense of self worth.  What a pathetic fan base.

Not to mention, after all the bluster and “hang a hundred” talk, they get flat out beat and make excuses about the flu and being sick.

Besides an obvious bullshit call in ‘16, Michigan didn’t get to blame anything for their losses and has had to take their lumps and swallow their pride every dang year. They get a taste of it just once and then the whining starts.

1997, the Day after The Game, go to a Bengals game, *live in cincy* wear my Michigan starter jacket.. yep still had it, attend the game with my ex.  Going to our seats an osu fan says something, I laugh it off score board, go to the next row past where our seats are behind them.  Midway through the 1st half I go down to get a beer, nachos and something else for the ex.  She decides she wants to come with me, the osu dude trips her as she heads down the steps.  We had just found out she was pregnant..  I go off, and the entire crowd immediately have us separated.  Ushers called and they either removed him or he left but it was ugly, still maybe the angriest I have been in my life.

I have others but that’s the one that takes the cake in my experience

To be transparent. Most OSU fans around here (Central Ohio) know they got their asses handed to them, gave me congrats and most admit that the better team won. I'm sure there are outliers to throw blame to whatever reason they can grasp, and those are the highly publicized denials that we feed off of.

You say recent years and your own anecdote is dated 2013...which is hardly recent.

Please don't think BPONE is just what we do, the chicken littles around Ohio are running rampant.

Gordon Gee, then president of OSU hoping that he doesn’t get fired by a bible-thumping Jim Tressel. Even in jest, it’s an insult to every degree issued by that institution.

I think the best story, quite honestly, is the one they are now writing and the one that was encapsulated in the responses to Howard's comments.

For most of the last two decades, we have had our collective noses rubbed viciously in Buckeye shit by their fans, been ridiculed for imagined traits, been laughed at for our troubles, and the year we stand up to it all, say "no more", and push them around on the field on the way to a win, they now expect a little decorum and dignified comportment in their time of sorrow? No, I am sorry. That's not how it works, especially not with them being on the losing end.

From that trait alone comes a story we can tell of every Buckeye fan.

Was living in Austin when Ohio State came to play Texas. Went to sixth street the Friday night before the game. I’ll take some blame, but I wore my Michigan shirt, and their fanbase, notorious for traveling well, was legion and drunk. I had people shoulder check me a bunch, an old drunk guy spill my beer, then write LLLLLoyd in it before his son pulled him back, I was threatened a bunch, and then I went to a wings place, where I shared a table with two outstanding Buckeye fans, who were thoughtful, and complimentary about Michigan. The Daily Texan took out photo for the newspaper and cover photo but my Michigan shirt confused them I assume, so they went with another photo from the restaurant. All in all, crazy memory haha.

It was pretty ugly. They brought Michigan shirts to give to the homeless to wear so they could laugh at them. I’m thankful I wasn’t killed. I’m not a big dude at all, and I wore my Michigan shirt only because I forgot I had it on, wearing it on casual Friday the first week or so of the season. I realized I had it on pulling into a parking structure. But I wish I would have kept in touch with those two level-headed fans. I really enjoy opposing fans who enjoy the rival and don’t look at it as a reason to hate someone.

Last weekend while eating dinner downtown Indianapolis, a server mentioned how respectful Michigan / Iowa fans were. Mentioned that he's had several bad  encounters with Ohio state fans over the years. That's pretty embarrassing.

Was at the 2019 game in Ann Arbor. The awful spray tanned orange Ohio females fans behind me cheered and celebrated openly when a Michigan player was injured. They were and are the fucking worst people in the universe. I’ve even had the opportunity to meet OSU grads who are normal and even they say OSU fans are the worst. Fuck em.

This is a generalization, but based on my experience over a long time, it may be true - a majority of the horrible OSU fans you run into are not actually graduates of the school.  They are knuckle-dragging, angry, uneducated, ignorant redneck lowlifes who have no class or ethical standards.  And there's a lot of them so you can't just dismiss them as "being the exceptions".

My wife’s family is from an hour north of Columbus. I was visiting them for Thanksgiving in 2014, go out to walk the dog in the afternoon after Thanksgiving dinner. I’m walking along the edge of the neighbor’s lawn because they don’t have sidewalks, and some guy comes out of the next house and starts yelling at me. I’m not wearing Michigan gear, and it’s not like my dog is leaving a mess in his yard or anything, but he clearly felt the need to leave his family’s Thanksgiving to get out some aggression. I listened for a few minutes and went on my way, noticing the OSU flag flying outside just door.

Read an article recently about the Washington State U flag being mailed around the country for the last 20 years or so for College Game Day. They specifically mentioned Buckeye fans being abusive to the flag bearer. It’s not just us, they are nasty to everyone, and they revel in it.

The night of the 2012 Game, my son (then 2) tripped and fell into the corner of a wall, opening a gash in his forehead that required stitches. We were all still wearing our Michigan gear as we arrived at the ER. As my wife and I waited and tried to calm our very upset and bleeding child, a couple of the staff (you know, medical professionals) made cracks about what a bad day we were having. After the second one, while we waited for the doctor, I said “if I hear one more fucking Michigan joke tonight…” That’s when the doctor walked in and made one more fucking Michigan joke.

As it turns out, I tend to internalize rage. My wife is a rather more verbal person. It always gives me a proud feeling to remember her ensuing tirade, delivered to the entire emergency room.

It’s always amazing and disturbing to me how otherwise normal people lose all sense of right and wrong when they see maize and blue.
