Senior Bowl Day 3 observations from around the interwebz

Folks seem mostly positive on Wormley and Lewis. Tidbits on Darboh - good route running, decent hands, needs to run a fast 40 at the combine.

Michigan wide receiver Amara Darboh had an eventful day. He was guilty of some early drops in the individual portion of practice, but Darboh did better in the one-on-ones. He ran away from Douglas to get open for one win and then outfought [WVU CB Rasul] Douglas on a jump ball to make a reception. Having a fast 40 time at the combine would be really helpful for Darboh.

Western Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Moton has impressed team sources this week, and he had a quality performance in the final session. He did well to stop a bull rush from Notre Dame defensive end Isaac Rochell, as Rochell couldn't only get a little push of Moton. Michigan defensive end Chris Wormley did get a win over Moton by using strength to get leverage to the inside with quickness to close. Overall, the Senior Bowl should solidify Moton as a day-two prospect.

Michigan wide receiver Amara Darboh has had a solid week. He has displayed impressive hands and has ideal size (6-1, 215 pounds) for the wide receiver position at the next level.

The final North wide receiver to stand out today was Michigan’s Amara Darboh. While he’s clearly a good athlete, Darboh clearly isn’t on par with [ECU WR Zay] Jones. Despite this, he was able to consistently create separation today (and throughout the week) because of his polished route-running skills. He knows how to attack the break point to sell the downfield route on comebacks, and uses his hands subtly to put distance between himself and the defensive back. Even when he isn’t able to create space, he shows he has the strong hands needed to win contested balls, as he did on a one-on-one rep against [Iowa CB Desmond] King.

Cincinnati Enquirer Bengals beat writer Jim Owczarski is also down in Alabama and had an interesting report from Mobile. He says the following seven players are among the prospects in the Senior Bowl who the Bengals “found interesting”:

Michigan’s Wormley has been having a nice week in Mobile. The defensive end had 37 tackles and 6.0 sacks this year as a fifth year senior. A team co-captain, he started all 13 games at defensive end this season. Last season, he had 66 tackles, 19 tackles-for-loss, 11 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1 pass breakup. He's been labeled as a versatile player, which we know the Bengals love. He's reportedly already had formal interviews with the SaintsDolphins and Patriots.

This next link has a longer write-up on Jourdan Lewis worth a look. A few tidbits below.

I like to fly under the radar and be one of the guys that nobody really knows and go out there and prepare to do my job. All I can do is do my job to the highest degree.”

“There’s a lot of people who say ‘I’m going to be one of the greats’ when they came through here, but you can’t guarantee that,” Lewis said. “What can you do is guarantee hard work. And that’s one of the things I want to guarantee is my hard work.”

"Scouts had him at 5’9 and change when they got him measured back in the spring," said NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein. "I think they had him at 5’9 7/8. So for him, a 5’10 measurement here is a good thing, and weighing 188 helps him, too. If he can maintain that weight and run really well at the combine, he'll be fine."

And saving the best for last... You make me happy, Chris...

Another player who aced the interviews was Michigan defensive end Chris Wormley. Sources from multiple teams raved about Wormley, and one said he seems "almost too good to be true." Wormley is intelligent and comes across with a serious and professional tone. With his versatile size and experience, Wormley could end up going much higher than most realize.

Taco and Worm will both be top 20 picks.

Pep will obviously go somewhere in the 1st round as well.

Lewis and Butt will be off the board by the end of the 3rd round.

Glasgow, Gedeon, Stribling, Chesson, Smith, Lano, and Magnuson all get drafted in the 4th round and on.

Do you seriously not think he will go in the first round??? The same Jabrill Peppers I'm talking about right? The guy that wore number 5 here just a couple months ago.

The Pats will take him if he somehow miraculously makes it to 32, but the Seahawks will take him if he makes it into the playoff teams. He won't. He will be picked in the top 25 on athleticism and return ability alone. The team that takes him will be amazed at how quickly he picks up the true safety position. People act like because he played an odd position this year that will make him a shakey pro. He still has ideal size for a safety, and on top of elite speed and athleticism, Jabrill is very smart. He'll learn scheme and new tricks very quickly.

Tac is maybe a top 15 guy depending on his combine numbers. Wormley is going to the Redskins at 17. They've been all over him at the Senior Bowl and he is a great fit.

On NFL Network. Mayock et al love Ryan Glasgow. They also think Lewis is excellent in coverage and smooth. They were higher on Wormley on day 3 than day 1 (which I also watched). They were impressed with Smith's pass protection and Gedeon's coverage skills. It seems like a lot of what they do is try to highlight the unknown kids (maybe to make themselves look better if one of those guys becomes a gem down the road) so there isn't a ton else to share.

Back in the 1970s Michigan had 10 players drafted twice (link).  It will be interesting to see what the number is this year with all of this draft hype building:

  1. Peppers - 1st round
  2. Taco - 1st round
  3. Wormley - early rounds
  4. Lewis - early rounds
  5. Butt - early rounds
  6. Glasgow - late rounds
  7. Stribling - late rounds
  8. Darboh - late rounds
  9. Mags - late rounds
  10. Smith - late rounds
  11. Chesson - has a shot
  12. Gedeon - has a shot
  13. Kalis - has a shot
  14. Thomas - has a shot
  15. Hill - has a shot
  16. Braden - unllikely, not impossibe
  17. Clark - unlikely, not impossible
  18. Allen - highly unlikely

Let's face it, we're not going to see that many guys drafted.  But there are probably 8 guys sure to get picked and another handful that have a decent chance.

I am not one to drink the Kool Aid but Clark seems like a guy a sterling organization like the Steelers would take in the 6th.  It's difficult to grow 6'4 corners even if his true height is 6 2" or something.  You can stash a guy like that at the bottom of the roster while he heals and see what you have next winter.

Some of the other guys like a Hill or Gedeon I just don't see NFL explosion or athleticism.

I think your list is safe up to 9.  Then I see Clark being 10.  So many flame outs in the 6th and 7th, he is a nice gamble.

I talked about Clark a lot before the injury and very bullish on him getting draft. However, the biggest reason I was so strong on his was that he would KILL the testing and really catch the eyes of some teams in the mid to late rounds. I was expecting him to run sub 4.5 and jump 40+ but with the injury the thing that I thought would make him jump out just won't be there.

Not to mention the amount of tape on him is short... He played what? 16 games as a corner? That hurts a lot but also makes some people think wow he is like fresh clay.

I think Chesson and Thomas both get drafted, definitely Chesson. He had potential first round hype coming into this year. Obviously he didn't live up to that but all it takes is for one team to love his measurables and look at his junior year to draft him. Thomas I think gets drafted mainly off athleticism in a late round.

This from an ex-scout who writes for dallas cowboys.com

Michigan receiver Amara Darboh sure catches the ball easily. I like how, when defenders play press coverage on him, he physically throws them aside. He is able to create separation with power, which allows him the space necessary to make the reception. Something else to note: the coaches have Darboh on the kickoff team playing as the force position of L4 and left tackle on the kickoff return

Even when he isn’t able to create space, he shows he has the strong hands needed to win contested balls, as he did on a one-on-one rep against [Iowa CB Desmond] King.
