Semi-OT: Chris Clark Saga Update - Syracuse Rejected Clark

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Apparently Chris Clark didn't change his mind again. Instead, Syracuse pulled the rug out from under the kid.

On one hand, that sucks for Chris. On the other, there has to be a reason that Syracuse rejected a 5-Star TE prospect....I don't know what to think anymore.

For those of you who think Clark decommitted from another school https://t.co/aYUnufsbne

While the young man seems (to put it mildly) like he has some growing up to do, Syracuse has put him in a bad spot. By publically accepting----ooops, no wait, rejecting---him, and then "not being able to comment due to NCAA rules, they've opened him up to worse rumors than him just being immature and indecisive.

If Syracuse didn't want him, they shouldn't have offered him. They should have done their due diligence beforehand, not after the fact.

It wouldn't be the first time a university offered a student-athlete only to withdraw the offer upon learning about such and such.  As I recall Michigan had a rash of football players that were offered, committed, and signed LOIs only to be rejected by UM because they couldn't qualify.  Now I'm not saying Clark didn't qualify for Syracuse, but let's not pretend his is a unique case.

I don't track recruiting nationwide, so I'm sure I missed something, but I can't recall having someone on campus (who you had previous discussions with earlier in their recruitment, so you know him at least somewhat), giving them an offer, which he then verbally accepts, and then the school pulling it within ten days. All with no reports of anything the player did during that time period (e.g., no arrest report).

I have no idea what happened and who is "at fault", but this is certainly unusual in terms of the speed. It suggests a bureaucratic screwup by Syracuse...but who knows?

His Dudeness

I heard when he was on his recruiting visit, they took him out for lunch and Chris asked for a Coke. The waitress asked if Pepsi was alright and Chris is still at the restaurant thinking it over.

Hahahaha, why am I getting negged? The kid committed to two schools then decommitted. His third choice, he at least actually enrolled in, and lasted a whole month. Now there is Syracuse, which lasted a few days, IIRC? It would probably take many months of consistent, focused work to learn to repair vacuums. I think I am being pretty generous!

So all we'll get is Clark's story or mysterious third person accounts from the Syracuse perspective.  I usually like to keep the door open for a kid, especially one who did not get into legal trouble, but this seems odd.

Staff did not get back in contact with him after he left UCLA.  When the story first came out I was wondering if this was more Syracuse pulling the offer than Clark decommitting again.

Something weird is going on, no doubt, but the big thing for all of us is he's not ending up at UM, and I have a feeling the very strangeness of everything is a big reason why.

It stated they mutually parted ways.  I think Syracuse passed based on that 2015 is a no go and then he'd sit '16.  He'd be elligible 2017.  A long wait just to have a 5 star with commitment/stability issues.

He had his chance to go to a good university, with a stable, demanding coach in Harbaugh, and chose to go to the bright lights of LA.

Sometimes the most painful lesssons are the ones we learn the most from.

Hope he gets his head together, but the smoke signals are not good, and it probably would not work out here anyway.

We only want people who want to WORK HARD, COMPETE, to be the best.  He does not look like he fits.

He went to a good university (UCLA) with a stable, demanding coach (Mora).  Don't act like Michigan is the only good choice for a recruit.

Who knows what his situation is, but don't act like *if only* he had been willing to work hard and done the right thing by going to Michigan he would have turned out fine.  Such a load of garbage.
