Scanned Document from Athletic department? Email Scam!

Submitted by MGoBat on

This is a heads up on a potential scam!! Did anyone else receive an email from sophlinn supposedly from the athletic department? It has an attachment that I did not dare open but the name checks out on the UM directory. No email body however so it seems very sketchy.

UPDATE: Confirmed scam.

"You may have received a suspicious email from us within the past hour with the subject line “Scanned Documents Received.”  This email was not a legitimate communication from Michigan Athletic Development.  Please delete the email immediately and do not open.  If you opened the attachment and clicked on any links and entered in any personal information or passwords, please immediately change your password for that account.

We apologize for any inconvenience and would like to assure you that we are taking action to remedy the situation."

I've heard it's a phishing attempt. if you open the attachment you will be redirected to MSU'S website and 3-9 season tickets will be billed to your credit card.

Just like with snail mail, the "from" or return address is provided by the email originator or letter sender without any check to ensure it's legitimate. If you have doubts, look at the entire email envelope, that shows originating IP address (like the postmark on an envelope, it shows where the letter was actually processed.) your email client should give you this option.

because it showed up in my inbox with a big fishing hook icon next to it, plus a text warning above the body of the email. Well played, Googles.

Now scanned documents are necessary everywhere and that's why we should have god scans. Personally, I decided to buy Epson scanner Perfection V600 because I have read a lot of positive comments about it. People seem to be in love with this scanner now
