San Antonio logistics

Submitted by MGoArchive on

Who else is making the trip? Just booked a flight from Chicago (taking the train from Detroit to Chicago to get there) to Austin (Saturday morning), driving from Austin to San Antonio with family friends for the game on Saturday.

Protip: look up flights and book them in google chrome incognito mode. Browsers can see your search history and will charge you more flying into any Texas airport because they know you’re booking for the final four. They can’t see this in incognito. When I was looking at flights earlier, the same southwest flights were $100+ more expensive on regular browser compared to incognito

Protip: None of what you wrote here is correct for any airline with the possible exception of the LCCs/ULCCs (including Southwest) which control their entire internet sales pipeline.  It's mostly an urban myth -- there's not currently any way for the major airlines to do this, as they publish their fares and availability to shared systems for travel agents, etc. to use.

It may become *less* urban myth-y in the future, as the company that manages most of the infrastructure is working on personalized pricing.  It's not yet clear how / if that will work, but once it exists, I'd be surprised if incognito mode would help.

I’m no tech expert but I do know how to read, and when I booked flights I was looking at both incognito mode and not and it was significantly cheaper in incognito. But if you don’t want to believe me go ahead

There are several possible reasons that you could see different search results.  However, I agree that Southwest is one of the companies that could actually do what you say.  The problem is the risk -- if they get caught, the potential negative publicity is massive.  They've built their brand as being the friendliest airline.  If they were found to be inflating the cost of flights based upon your search history, the reputation hit could be extremely dangerous.

If you find that this is repeatably true, I urge you to take screenshots and distribute them far and wide.  Tweet at them; try to get the Detroit media involved.  This is a PR nightmare waiting to happen.

I can promise you, however, that the major airlines (American, Delta, United, Alaska) don't have the capability to do this.  Everybody sees the same inventory.  Fares are filed in a consistent fashion through a central publishing company.  It simply isn't technically feasible (yet) for them to do this, even if they wanted to.

PS: I apologize for the snarkiness of the initial reply.  This is a pet peeve of mine, but you were obviously only trying to help the community.  I'll downvote myself in penance. :)

Appreciate it, no worries about the snark! I had one too many mind probes at Ricks last night, so I definitely had a touch of snark as well. Let’s celebrate Beilein and this amazing team!

I still have my M Card - do you know of a student who has access to purchasing tickets that can snag me one for Saturday/Monday? I'd pay for it of course.

Looking for some MGoBoard help here...I post .torrents of games (for ten years now) / run the live streams so MGoFans can watch the games live online...hoping someone can lend a hand. Yes, I'm pulling that card - ten years of sharing my labors is good payment in kind.

Shoot me an e-mail - mgovault at gmail dot com

Going with three friends and am planning on driving the 22 hours from Ann Arbor to SA. Once in a lifetime experience to have your team in the final four when you’re in school. I’m not going to waste it.

Lived in Austin for 3 years. Visited SA once. It kinda sucks. There's the river walk and then... Everything else. It's a short and easy drive from Austin, so you should be good there. Get bbq and tacos and see the Alamo and watch the game. That's about all I got.

I’ll say UM Loyola will be the early game if Nova and Duke win. That would be the “bigger” matchup that would make CBS slot them in the higher prime time slot. If either Nova or Duke lose, then UM will get the late game as they’ll pump the Cinderella storyline.

Flying from Detroit to Dallas on Friday night. Then fly out of Austin first thing Tuesday AM. Wife and I checked the tickets after the game and prices more than doubled from when we bought them on Friday night

Critical day is today when I try to convince my wife that a 30-hour, one-way drive (compared to $4,000 in airfare for the family) could be a blast. She was caught up in the euphoria as well, so she is willing to listen. I put my odds of pulling off the finals at 15 percent...

2 weeks ago I was in town for a convention. I ignored the convention hotels and found a great budget option about 50 feet off the beaten path of the unique River Walk area. I believe it was called the Riverwalk Plaza at 100 Villita St. Simple and clean but not pretty, but I wasn’t there to hang out in the room.

Wifi was great when I did need to do some work from the room. There is a great little courtyard pool if it gets hot.

You could walk to the Alamodome if the games are there, but not to the place where the Spurs play.

Off days should be spent walking around the King William Historic District and tasting what it has to offer. And for some higher end dining there is a place called Bliss in that general direction.

The Market Square area is stupid. Skip it.

I'm trying to head out there from Cypress, TX (2hrs East). My wife is being cool about it. I might be alone unless some of my friends in the area can make it.

It's stupid expensive to fly to San Antonio from Stockholm. Then again, it's also stupid expensive to fly anywhere else having waited this long to book tickets for spring break, and we do want to go on vacation somewhere...
