Sam Webb Thinks We'll Get Solomon, Collins, Martin, Melifonwu

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

From this morning's Recruiting Roundup on WTKA, here are Sam Webb's feelings on the various commits. (He mentioned Mekhi Becton's name, but I didn't hear him say where he thinks he's going.)

Aubrey Solomon - Not a gut feeling, but Sam said, "I think Michigan is gonna get him." His only reservation from issuing a gut feeling is because Aubrey has changed his mind so much.

Oliver Martin - Feels the best about him. Says he has a gut feeling that he'll come here.

Nico Collins - "I like Michigan's chances. I think they're better than 50-50."

Ifeatu Melifonwu - This is the Syracuse DB commit who is a 2/3-star. Sam said, "I feel he's gonna end up in this class." Sounds like it's Michigan's call.

Jay Tufele - Not Michigan. It's between Utah and USC.

Willie Gay - Feels Michigan still has a chance, but if he had to predict today, he'd say Mississippi State.

...all things considered.

I was PISSED that they didn't adjust once he started making mistakes rather than adjusting before anything went wrong. Because of it we gave up a long TD pass when Lewis and Thomas weren't on the same page. Playing cover 2 trying to hide Metellus killed us.

When they let the kid play, he did fine. Let him get burned a couple of times before you switch the whole frickin defense.

Alright, I'm off it...new season.

To be fair here, Peppers got hurt the night before and was still trying to go before the game. It's not like they had much time to gameplan, prepare, and practice for a big game without Peppers. A true freshman got a surprise start when our All-American linebacker gets hurt. There's not a team out there that won't try to "hide," him.

I'm kind of in your camp because I like the idea of being as athletic as possible defensively, but really feel like Solomon is the lynchpin to round out the class. We have enough talented OLB/S types to develop a couple good options at Viper in the next couple years. Depth on the interior DL is terrifying next year and beyond. We have plenty of SDE/DT tweeners, but desparately need to add NT-shaped players to the roster.

Alabama 2017 4-star DT commit Akial Byers fails to qualify to enroll. There was scuttlebutt on here that Bama had a limited amount of schollies left. I hope they don't make a bagman "special delivery" to Solomon.

Not that we won't miss Peppers or that Gay isn't a great player, but we really need NTs more. Our #1 NT looked dominant at times (Mone), but if he goes down (and he hasn't been healthy an entire season yet) we don't have much behind him and/or in the future when he graduates. Last year we didn't really land any top NTs and we don't have any in this class either.  I think Solomon is the the #1 priority left of the board.  All the other NTs on the roster or verbally committed seem like they will need 2-3 years to develop.

I can't decide if getting Willie Gay and having this fanbase get used to a guy with the last name "Gay" for 4 years would help stop these posts, or if having him go to LSU and never again recruiting another person with the last name Gay is the more foolproof way to avoid this idiocy.

Whichever is correct, that's what I'm hoping for.

Yes, evaluating the fanbase on the basis of what one (or a dozen, or whatever) folks will post online anonymously is definitely a reasonable foundation for your soapbox.

My grandfather, who would be 106 if he were alive, said he had nothing against the homosexuals, but missed using the word Gay to mean happy.  I guess as a kid people would say stuff like "I'm feeling gay today."    I bet the people with the happy last name really dislike the jokes at this point.
