Sam Webb says Michigan no longer recruiting Jamari Buddin/Belleville

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on May 15th, 2020 at 10:01 AM

On his recruiting roundup today, he basically says the staff made one last push for Jamari Buddin this week but effectively told him that if he doesn’t want to join they are going to look into other prospects (namely Jaydon Hood and Junior Colson). It also sounded like the staff doesn’t want to put a ton of resources into recruiting Belleville anymore since the coach there keeps undermining there status there with recruits and that it will be an exercise in futility. Will be interesting to see how this plays out since Belleville has become one of the top talent producers in the state.

Buddin also said that Edwards won’t be coming to Michigan but Webb refuted that saying it doesn’t corroborate with anything from Edwards camp is saying and that Jim is himself taking an active role in his recruitment. Edwards is also waiting to see how Michigan’s class fills out.

If I were Belleville's administration, I would put pressure on my coach to keep his players in-state and try and quash his personal beef with coaches. One of the regrets I have is that a mentor talked me out of applying to a graduate program at UM, saying it was declining. Although I am happy where I am at, I still regret letting a man I trusted wholly allow his own issues with some of the faculty in the program get in the way of my pursuing my application.

I'm not bothered by this news as it's been mentioned here before that he wasn't a pressing need. As a side note, I have taken on a new recruiting outlook. I don't think a new coach will come in and load the team up with top 100 players. I don't believe that is in Michigan's opportunity set. I'm also not bothered by players in the state going elsewhere. I believe one of the reasons Michigan hasn't had the success the fan base desires is because of the in state talent pool. I've seen what happens to the program with a bunch of Michigan players lately and it hasn't been championship caliber. I also realize there is a temptation for the coaches to go all out to be more appealing for certain players like Donovan Edwards. However, the recent history of those players suggests it's unlikely that they will bring a championship either. The program has had four different coaches since i've followed it, one of them had a transcending Michigan player bring a championship and I remember him being a generic three star. I'm not saying put zero resources into the state but I don't see much value putting a lot into it. I like the idea of taking high ceiling prospects regardless of their development level or their location.

if this doesnt encapsulate the drama and highly frustrating world of recruiting I don't know what does.

A millionaire, top college and NFL football coach is having to deal with these petty pissing matches with a high school coach, leading to a non-recruitment of an entire football program. WOW, just wow.

I thought this was all about the kids, and if that was the case, adults should just adult and get over it.

Good, I'm honestly tired of the kids who basically play with fanbases on social media to stroke their ego. Colson and Hood are better prospects anyway. There is 100% some sort of anti-Michigan sentiment on the Belleville staff and there's no denying it at this point.

Buddin will likely end up at MSU and fade into obscurity like all the other Belleville kids

It would be nice to have Edwards as part of the class, but it’s not an essential this year with the number of RBs we have.  DL is most important for us IMO.

Not true. There is really no telling where he’ll go. Every time I see Donavan he is wearing maize & blue . I’ve watched him since he played for West Bloomfield Panthers with my son.  He was wearing UM shorts at a BBQ ( pre-covid obviously).

Sounds like Michigan has another prospect that wants to commit or the commitment of Tyler McLaurin change the staff's approach.  IE they are fine if they don't land another lber and don't care to push for Buddin if he isn't ready to commit?  Could the overall history with the Belleville staff have that affect?  Plausible.

But for the Belleville staff, don't they risk losing players to transfer if they are going to push a top school and in particular the top in state school away from their top athletes?  Buddin could easily transfer and then the coach is without his star player who likely is the best player on the field for all but a game or two and likely by a significant margin.

The Belleville coach sounds like a top level loser, why talk a kid out of going to a school that might benefit him.  Is he like a Michigan state graduate?

Yes, they quit communicating with him as I remember in late november.  More than likely it's harbaugh's indifferent personality that impedes a typical good"working relationship " . He's just not the type of guy that strikes up conversations with total strangers @ red lights?
