Saban Creates A Competing Camp

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

Michigan has camps scheduled in Alabama on June 6 and 7. So naturally Saban just created a camp from June 5th-8th. I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em...

No Saban is not fucking with you. He scheduled it at the same time so the 4-5 star kids can also have a place to camp. I mean if your a 4-5 star who's camp are you attending ? The National Champs or the school with rain man as the head coach that can't even win its own division? It won't be a competition. Michigan doesn't get to compete with programs like Bama and OSU, they are something entirely different, lead by National Championship Winning Coaches, Michigan on the other hand is not. My guess is the coaches at Southern Alabama are not real happy to see UM camping and drawing some of their potential players to attend

You guys are so sweet and cute, I bet your mothers are so proud of you. Here are a few clues of which fanbase, We beat UM every year....At least one of our coaches coached with Tressel.....Harbaugh has never beaten my head coach.......We have more kids in the draft this year than UM.....We have less arrest among football players than UM.....Have you figured it out yet ? Or are you still spell checking? Don't worry if you can't figure it out, you can get back to dress shopping.

It sort of has the "Nick Saban Football Camps - a division of Saban Worldwide, LLC" feel to it just by looking at the poster, but yeah, I can only imagine what inspired this, at least in part. You can only hope that - if nothing else - he hires a more competent marketing firm than Penn State did in Franklin & Associates.

Saban just knows that if Bama Camps during the same time that none of the truly talented players will choose UM's camp over Bama's. This could actually turn out to be very embarrassing for crazy Jim, and most likely will be. It will be framed as a Winners Camp and a Losers Camp, and the world knows who is who.

I agree that this is gamesmanship and a smart move by Saban.  That said, the opinion a year agao was that Michigan wasn't going to make any real waves with these camps and that the top kids from AL would still go to Bama and Auburn.  This shows that Harbaugh truly is a thorn in their side and they feel they need to play defense.

I'm OK with this.  The kids who weren't going to look at Michigan seriously will go to the Saban camp, and the kids truly interested in Michigan will show up to ours knowing they have lots of chances to see Bama.  Plus, there are lots of kids in the south that will get Michigan offers and not Bama offers, or who might get offers from both but are getting more love from Michigan.

We're not doing this to get every kid from the South, but to get a couple.  If this happened a year ago, for example, I imagine Kingston Davis, who wasn't being looked at by Bama, still would have shown up to our camp.

Agreed.  This legitimizes the Michigan football camps.

Kids (and their parents) are smart.  They know why Saban is doing this.  If even Saban is setting his schedule by what Harbaugh does, well it may be worth checking out what all the fuss is.

It's a net win for us.  We won't get some kids that are going to go to Saban's camp instead.  But the kids we do get will be a higher quality as more and more attention is focused on what Harbaugh / Michigan are up to.

We don't need to get every recruit Saban really wants.  We just need to hit on a couple here and there.

With the pull of the Alabama program, I wonder just how much Harbaugh's presence really scare's Saban.  Alabama can recruit wherever it wants and do so with great success. The better SEC programs also recruit nationally.  If we get one or two kids from Alabama, does it really hurt them?

I'd think the bigger problem is if more schools may follow in JH's footsteps.

I also think that as Michigan continues to succeed as we all expect them to with JH at the reigns, it will become easier to get top recruits.  In the short term, all of the exposure makes our recruiting easier but the anticipated success of Michigan football will eventually carry the day.

Specifically to Embarrass Harbaugh. It is a Brilliant move on his part, Saban knows that all the top talent will attend Bama's camp, leaving UM looking like the second tier program it truly is. Only this event will put it on display for the world to see.

Good for Nick and it only gives Harbaugh more juice. I can't wait to see what Harbaugh does or who he brings in to compete for the spotlight. Do you really think Harbaugh is going to throw up his hands and think oh shoot we are going to be 2nd best???

yes, unfortunately I think you are right. This is a pretty good 'fight fire with fire' response and I'm sure it will be effective. Wonder if other schools/coaches will follow suit.

That said I think it's hilarious that these coaches now feel compelled to do this. Harbaugh is clearly the puppet master right now.

Agree that this is a smart play by Saban.  However, my understanding is that "top kids", if they go to camps at all, typically do so for only a day -- kind of a cameo appearance -- so there'd be time for them to go to both camps.

Could also be: coaches, children, compliance, casuists, connivers, centrioles. I mean really, the only requirement is that it has to start with a C or be misspelled in such a way as to make is start with a C
