It’s a really rare thing to fire a guy this early in the season. Rutgers is a long rebuild with little talent, so there were going to be some bad years. I would normally be surprised that they’d do it like this.

But... it’s not just the losing. They keep getting dumb penalties. They can’t get plays onto the field effectively. They players aren’t living up even to their modest talent and they are substantially worse than lower conference schools.

You might not have the talent, but it says a lot that three years on the staff can’t even get plays in or teach players not to commit basic penalties. I think the clear disarray in the staff told the AD that nothing would change and that the players will poorly served by continuing to play for them.

I usually think a mid season firing is rash, and with Rutgers in particular I think they need patience... but based on what I’ve seen this was actually the right call. Particularly with guys like Schiano out there that you can get.

I kinda agree with Matt Hinton that they should go flexbone option at Rutgers, though, and I’m glad they’re not listening to him.

I'm really happy to see Rutgers is spending its Big Ten money on Chris Ash's $8.45 multimillion dollar buyout. What a stupid system, and what a joke of a university to do this mid-season. What Rutgers administrator could possibly be surprised the football team is 1-3 right now, so as to warrant firing Ash?

What Big Ten money? Rutgers doesn't get a full share until 2027. Their finances are not great right now, especially for a Big Ten team. Rutgers has been borrowing against future Big Ten payouts. It's possible their ticket sales and fundraising had gotten so bad that they had to make a move.

I thought I read something about Rutgers getting early payments from the B1G. I could be wrong, and it might just be a loan from somewhere other than the B1G, but I know they are spending money they don't currently have .

Edit: don't know how I missed the last part of your post, so yeah...I second what you said about the borrowing.

$8.5 million buyout too. Rutgers doesn't even see the full B1G share until 2027. I saw someone mention Schiano above, but I am not even sure they can afford him. And rebuilding Rutgers in the B1G East is a different animal than the gutted Big East during conference expansion. It's possible his coaching stock has been so damaged that he would take it. The Mack Brown reunion is working so far at UNC.

Wow that's crazy that the decision was officially made 2 weeks ago but just carried out now.  I'm not super surprised that this occasionally happens, but you never hear it come out publicly.  It's also stupid - once you've made the decision, pull the trigger.

LSU was real slow to let go of Les Miles too, for like two years. They didn't want to make the move. But it got to the point they knew they had to, even though all of them on the board liked him, very much. It was hard. They had a real hard time telling him at the meeting.

Things go on behind the scenes for a while sometimes.................. at other schools too......... it's hard at other schools sometimes too........ even sad to make the move....... really sad.................
