Rutgers has fired Chris Ash
September 29th, 2019 at 2:31 PM ^
Ash may have stunk as a HC, but he was a decent DC.
But I'm happy overall with Brown.

Welcome: Greg Schiano?
September 29th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
They would be nuts not to offer him. He was their only good coach on the last 100 years
September 29th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
Why not go for Schiano's last boss? By firing Ash so early, Rutgers is at the front of the line to hire Meyer. He'll probably only ask them for double what he would take from USC. Time to see what the Rutgers money cannon can do.
September 29th, 2019 at 6:42 PM ^
Would they actually put the money in the cannon?
September 29th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
I mean...he had to go right? This team wasn’t making any progress.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:03 PM ^
I would have liked him to stay forever?
September 29th, 2019 at 3:17 PM ^
It’s a really rare thing to fire a guy this early in the season. Rutgers is a long rebuild with little talent, so there were going to be some bad years. I would normally be surprised that they’d do it like this.
But... it’s not just the losing. They keep getting dumb penalties. They can’t get plays onto the field effectively. They players aren’t living up even to their modest talent and they are substantially worse than lower conference schools.
You might not have the talent, but it says a lot that three years on the staff can’t even get plays in or teach players not to commit basic penalties. I think the clear disarray in the staff told the AD that nothing would change and that the players will poorly served by continuing to play for them.
I usually think a mid season firing is rash, and with Rutgers in particular I think they need patience... but based on what I’ve seen this was actually the right call. Particularly with guys like Schiano out there that you can get.
I kinda agree with Matt Hinton that they should go flexbone option at Rutgers, though, and I’m glad they’re not listening to him.
September 29th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
That's a shame.

Or for a player to be named later.
September 29th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
Those teams suck too.
September 29th, 2019 at 1:57 PM ^
Pitt actually makes sense from a geographic and academic standpoint and gives PSU a cultural-relevant rival.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:31 PM ^
And that is why Pitt will never happen. Too much of a threat to PSU dominance in the state...
September 29th, 2019 at 2:31 PM ^
Not in basketball, and they have their years in football. They should have been the original choices all along.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
Can we just fire both teams and go back to 12?
September 29th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
Then the Big Ten would make sense again.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
For that we need to get rid of Penn State and Nebraska as well.

September 29th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
I’d rather we just release them instead of hold out for a trade.
September 29th, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
We could put them on waivers and maybe get a waiver fee for them.
September 29th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
I thought they would wait until the end of the season.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:16 PM ^
I can’t believe the buyout is almost 8.5 million lol. Agent of the year
September 29th, 2019 at 6:24 PM ^
Has to be the guy repping A Aron and Mahomey in the State Farm commercials, amirite?

im shocked

Good news, now he’ll have some extra time on his hands to literally fence his garden instead of failing to do so metaphorically.

It’s a fireable offense when you make Michigan’s offense look good
September 29th, 2019 at 2:00 PM ^
I'm really happy to see Rutgers is spending its Big Ten money on Chris Ash's $8.45 multimillion dollar buyout. What a stupid system, and what a joke of a university to do this mid-season. What Rutgers administrator could possibly be surprised the football team is 1-3 right now, so as to warrant firing Ash?
September 29th, 2019 at 2:08 PM ^
What Big Ten money? Rutgers doesn't get a full share until 2027. Their finances are not great right now, especially for a Big Ten team. Rutgers has been borrowing against future Big Ten payouts. It's possible their ticket sales and fundraising had gotten so bad that they had to make a move.
September 29th, 2019 at 2:35 PM ^
I thought I read something about Rutgers getting early payments from the B1G. I could be wrong, and it might just be a loan from somewhere other than the B1G, but I know they are spending money they don't currently have .
Edit: don't know how I missed the last part of your post, so yeah...I second what you said about the borrowing.

They likely called J. G. Wentworth 877 CASH NOW!!!!!

“...and a report released Friday states that the Rutgers athletic program also ranks last or near the bottom of the 12-team conference in financial performance.”
12-team conference? I guess even the Jersey papers don’t count Rutgers as being in the Big Ten.
September 29th, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
Ouch!
September 29th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
Spartie can't count to 12; Jersey newspaper can't count to 14.

$8.5 million buyout too. Rutgers doesn't even see the full B1G share until 2027. I saw someone mention Schiano above, but I am not even sure they can afford him. And rebuilding Rutgers in the B1G East is a different animal than the gutted Big East during conference expansion. It's possible his coaching stock has been so damaged that he would take it. The Mack Brown reunion is working so far at UNC.

Wow that's crazy that the decision was officially made 2 weeks ago but just carried out now. I'm not super surprised that this occasionally happens, but you never hear it come out publicly. It's also stupid - once you've made the decision, pull the trigger.
September 29th, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
They knew they were going to fire Ash this summer. That’s why Schiano stepped down from the Pats.
September 29th, 2019 at 8:48 PM ^
LSU was real slow to let go of Les Miles too, for like two years. They didn't want to make the move. But it got to the point they knew they had to, even though all of them on the board liked him, very much. It was hard. They had a real hard time telling him at the meeting.
Things go on behind the scenes for a while sometimes.................. at other schools too......... it's hard at other schools sometimes too........ even sad to make the move....... really sad.................

1) This guy has the most Jersey name ever.
2) His experience is equivalent to hiring Chris Partridge after 2 years at Michigan.
