Rivals.com national basketball analyst Eric Bossi weighs in on U-M search

Submitted by 1201 on May 21st, 2019 at 6:35 PM

Last week, the college hoops world shook when John Beilein leftMichigan for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I said it last week and I’ll say it again today, his timing was terrible and because of where we are in the calendar, it’s going to be tough for Michigan to get a legitimate shot with the types of candidates the job should merit.

But, that’s the nature of the beast. It also doesn’t absolve athletic director Warde Manuel from getting caught with his pants down. After Beilein flirted with the NBA before, Manuel needed to be constantly in his ear, making sure he was totally happy and prepared just in case Beilein did leave. So far, it looks like he went 0-fer on all of that. We are a week in and for the most part the job search looks to be stuck in the mud.

The bright side is that we should be seeing some movement. On Monday, Michigan met with Providence coach Ed Cooley (who I wrote last week would be an outstanding candidate) plus they should be meeting with Wolverine legend Juwan Howard today and former Michigan assistant and current Butler head coachLaVall Jordan could be a target down the road. Also, Shaka Smart’s name remains in heavy rotation as a possible candidate.

I don’t know that any of those guys is a home run, but they all strike me as pretty capable and given the circumstances would be reasonable hires. Now, Manuel and his search firm just need to get moving towards actually hiring one of those guys, or somebody else, because time is ticking. The Wolverines already lost top-50 standout

Jalen Wilson

due to Beilein leaving and the longer they go without a hire, the more danger there is that they could lose four-star signee

Cole Bajema

 as well.

Michigan is and always will be bigger than one or two 2019 recruits, so I’m not terribly worried about that. But, each day that goes by without a new coach hired puts them in a bigger hole with 2020 and 2021 prospects and this isn’t the time or place to be dragging the hiring process out.

What exactly is this guys problem with blaming Warde for everything? I'm lukewarm about him but even I know trying to hire an elite bball coach at this time of the year is incredibly difficult.

Did you not see UCLA search for a month and end up with their 19th choice?

Brad Stevens, Donovan, and others were never gonna come here anyway.

He has years of history, on various accounts, of being the biggest debbie downer, complainer, and generally negative person on the board.  He's the kind of person who, if we win a national championship, would complain about our shooting percentage or that we played an easy schedule or anything else to put down the team and the program.

The board isn’t your therapy session.

Also,

We are a week in and for the most part the job search looks to be stuck in the mud.

is just not true.

Seriously, complaining about not hiring a replacement coach in a week, which is a good thing, is a height of idiocy. If we hired somebody in a week, I would have said we rushed into things without proper vetting or planning. What company in the world would hire somebody in this high of a position in a week? It is like the OP has no relation to reality whatsoever. It is a disease.

This situation is entirely different since the article was posted 9 hours ago. It's all but been announced that Howard will be the coach. This ticking clock stuff is irrelevant. But I'm glad you found something else that echoes your sentiment to make the same point once again.

Cooley is not an outstanding candidate.

You’re wrong and should feel bad.

Also, is there a point limit to make posts?  Can we neg this guy into oblivion so he can no longer make posts?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but there's literally not one piece of new, or even particularly current, information in this, right?

Worse than that it is it isn't even accurate.

"But, that’s the nature of the beast. It also doesn’t absolve athletic director Warde Manuel from getting caught with his pants down. One of the first things I heard was that Warde figured this was coming and was ready for it.

I used my first vote on an OP on the new site to downvote Maizen. Why am I not surprised?

Warde did a bad job period.   He should have done whatever he could to make JB stay.  JB shouldn't have to beg to get his assistants a pay raise to average Big ten salary.  IMO Warde has done nothing to prove he can do a good job being our AD.  He hasnt done anything that bad though either. Like a few Michigan insiders have said and these are actual reporters and people in the know , Warde should have treated JB like JH . He should of asked JB whatever you want or need I have your back or I can get .  Maybe Warde did but from what has been reported he didnt do that. How can you let the best coach in Basketball History just leave.  If Ed Cooley was one of the top finalists then Warde failed us right there.  No way he should have been considered.  Yes the timing sucks but we have a top 10 program with some of the best facilities and fans In  the nation with millions of dollars to back our sports.

The part I just can’t understand is that (according to Brendan Quinn) other than 1 text message, Warde had no contact with Beilein for 11 days after being informed that he was going to have discussions with NBA teams. It may not have made a difference in the end, but how do you not stay in the loop and aggressively try to keep him?

An article from a guy who knows quite a bit about recruiting nationally, knows something about coaches and knows a small fraction of what some people on the board do about this search. Absolutely zero inside knowledge added.

The OP is at his usual tricks, and I look forward to his removal from the site with the improved post down voting tool, but the author of the piece itself is also pretty clueless.

His whole premise is that Michigan should have had, I guess, clandestine meetings with a cadre of possible candidates for Beilein's job on the off chance he decided to leave, something nobody would do because it's incredibly disruptive for everyone and would inevitably lead to leaks that would submarine morale and hurt recruiting.

But whatever. It'll be Howard and after Maizen gets cratered for complaining about it, he'll go away until fall camp where he'll complain about the lack of defensive tackles and how Harbaugh will never beat anyone ever again.  It'll be a reminder of season changes at least.

I honestly thought the board was a bit too tough on you. I mean we all have opinions right? I actually admire those who don't subscribe to the groupthink phenomenon.

At this point however, it's obvious that you enjoy the attention you receive from the blog. Even if it's negative. I encourage you to look within and ask yourself why that's case.

Was this article written a week ago?  Literally all of this info is bad and outdated.

1201 = troll job from 12/1/18, date of most recent B1G championship. This guy is a one-dimensional phony fan. He hates Michigan, we love Michigan. I say go blue!  And, screw phonies like 1201.

The only thing relevant in that whole article was the assertion that Michigan has lost Jalen Wilson.

I looked up to see whether he committed elsewhere because his initial comment was that his decision would depend on the new hire.

He's taking officials to Kansas and UNC which is def tough competition but is M totally out of it for him?  Gotta think if they get a deal done soon and retain Yaklich who was the primary reason for his commitment in the first place, there's a decent chance of him staying in the class.  Especially with Iggy gone and near certain spot in the starting lineup.

Any idea of whether there's a chance for a recommitment?
