RIP US gymnast Kurt Thomas
Since men's gymnastics has (arguably) been the best sport at UM over the last 2 decades, I thought the passing of one of the sports' icons ought to at least get a shout out. Thomas was not related to UM (or to Coach Golder), but it's a safe bet to say he had an influence on many gymnasts who have passed through UM. Besides, who can ever forget Gymkata?

This isn't quite "U.S. lands man on moon" but it happened three days ago and was splashed across the mainstream media (sports and otherwise).
Also, as you note, there's no connection to Michigan.
I've seen far worse on the board, but every other currently visible post (regardless of its overall value) is more relevant to Michigan sports than this one.
i mean, at least it was sports
We'll be sure to revive that same argument any time someone posts a "x celebrity or famous musician with no relevance to sports or connection to Michigan has died" thread.
blueheron, you clearly haven't seen Gymkata. It connects to everything. One of the great martial arts B movies of the 80s!
-15 and counting. This has to be one of the dumbest post responses ever.
I personally appreciate the original post. I for one didn’t see any news about Thomas’s passing. Thomas literally changed men’s US gymnastics forever. Before that it was just an Eastern European sport. Thomas did for men’s gymnastics what Greg LeMond did for bicycling. Certainly, it’s far more important then a Minecraft version of a 200,000 seat stadium.
I didn't see it either but I remember him from the Olympics when I was a kid. He was pretty damn impressive. I mean what kid didn't want to look like those dudes. They were jacked!
Thanks
I don't give a flying shit about your opinion.
I’m pretty sure the statement from the Iowa strength coach might interest you!
At least he lived long enough to see the awesomeness of 2020.
This is a bummer for me. I was a high-school and college gymnast in the 70s/80s, and he was my inspiration. Had his picture up in my high-school locker.
Wow! I didn't hear about this. Thanks for posting. That name sure brings back memories.
I didn't realize that he went to that college sports powerhouse Indiana State. He led them to a national championship 2 years before the Magic - Bird showdown.
Thanks
I never saw the movie, but the trailer had an outsized impact on my psyche. My kids take MMA and I want to sign them up for Gymnastics just so they can do Gymkata.
RIP
64 is too young!
I wouldn't even say it's an argument.
Men's gymnastics is the most consistent sport we have. Golder has built an awesome program. Would have had a really good shot at a 5th national title this year.
