Kiffin is already crushing it at Ole Miss, a tough place to win unless you are cheatin' balls. Discount Hugh Freeze years and Ole Miss has one other ten-win season in the last fifty years.

I have major questions about his character though. In college football you hire from within if you can, as it is less disruptive to the program.

I would be really bummed if JH left for the NFL.  And I really don't think it's going to happen.  But if Lane Kiffin was announced as the new head coach, I would no longer be bummed.  He can be classified as a jerk from his younger coaching days.  But it seems he's really matured since then.  I listened to some interviews and he is a really likeable guy.  He has just the right amount of arrogance that would fit well at Michigan.  Great recruiter.  Smart offensive mind.  Puts a priority on defense.  Next year's offense would be all kinds of great if he was the HC.

I think it has to be either Fickell, Gattis or Matt Campbell (I know some have soured on him, but he's still a heck of a coach). If it's not Gattis, he's gone shortly thereafter. If it's not one of these 3, I don't know what to think.

But also: I'm waiting for the official announcement before I believe Harbaugh's leaving.

Harbaugh may well leave but for years we heard from NFL guys with lots of followers that Harbaugh was going to be scooped up by various NFL franchises and none of it happened.

I think a lot of the reporting now is speculation from NFL guys who are listening to front offices and agents of GMs moreso than concrete negotiations.  I may well be wrong but NFL reporting in particular is extremely hive-minded and so they'll all jump on the same story with minimal additional sourcing.  And honestly, if she actually knew he'd be leaving she'd likely give a team name, not "the NFL" as if the choice is UM or whichever NFL team he wanted.

Yeah that last thing you said there makes me believe she's just piggy-backing off what she's hearing/hoping will happen.  The only job openings I'm aware of are the one's in Jacksonville and LV.  Of the two, Jacksonville is the only one interviewing candidates.  They keep mentioning the candidates by name too so I really don't think this is true.

Other jobs will open up but right now I'm supremely skeptical of this woman's claim.

Yeah, there will be a couple more spots opening up but I have a hard time thinking Jacksonville would take on another college coach (even one with an NFL past) fresh off Meyer.  LV might well be in the playoffs so they may be playing themselves out of that race.  Minnesota and Seattle may well move on but Seattle is also likely to move on from Wilson as well then, in which case you're asking the new HC to take over a team without a QB and no real path to a decent run.

That's the thing - Harbaugh isn't going somewhere where he's looking at a multi-year rebuild with a ton of uncertainty.  Chicago is a spot because you can squint and see a contending team there; maybe the same with with Minnesota if you like Cousins (I don't) as your QB future.  But otherwise there are a lot of junk teams with low ceilings for the next 2-3 years.

This seems to suggest that NFL reporters will publish stories simply to generate clicks on their name or their publication. Certainly that can't be true?

I’m by no means a twitter expert, but I thought she was attached to the Michael Fabiano guy that also has been vaguely reporting Harbaugh to the NFL…

She's reporting what she's hearing, which is likely rumors that the NFL is perfectly happy to push because it makes their product seem so desirable that the college COY wants to jump back in.  No need to ruin someone's career over it, just take it with a grain of salt that she's not reporting from an objective position.
