Since we just passed Easter is it acceptable to use a religious analogy here? Because the first thought that came to my mind about the irony of straight-and-narrow Beilein landing out there is Jesus cleansing the Temple.

I think it's closer to the story of the Twelve Labors of Hercules from Greek Mythology. One of those seemingly impossible tasks was that Herc had to clean the Augean stables in a single day. He did it by redirecting two rivers to flow through the stables and wash away the filth.

If JB takes that job, then like Herc, he's gonna have to clean out a great deal of shit.

I always try to do one thing that is impossible. So I am now going to suck this piano into my lungs.

So the column from the link just asks if Beilein could be a candidate, then links to another column on their own site, which lists several coaches they think would be considered.  There’s no actual news here other than speculation.

Read it if you want but it is a clickbait waste of time.

Via SportsLine oddsmakers: Who will be the next Arizona basketball coach?

  • Damon Stoudamire Even
  • Tommy Floyd +250
  • Josh Pastner +400
  • Miles Simon +900
  • Mark Pope +1200
  • Greg McDermott +1500
  • Eric Musselman +2000

I don't believe Beilein wants to leave the area anyway.

I wish nothing but the best for Coach B where ever he goes. I would prefer him to stay out of the Big Ten but he and Howard won't be fighting for recruits. They're completely different in the recruiting style.

C'mon.

A 68-year old, straight arrow man like John Beilein is going to go to a school that likely has significant NCAA sanctions coming (and even if it doesn't, would need to deal with the threat of them for the next 2-3 years), while also competing against UCLA and USC programs that appear to finally be awakening from their slumbers?

I see zero chance of this happening, unless Beilein has a winter home there or something (and I don't think that's the case).

Eh Zona fired their coach, therefore the NCAA won't give them any sanctions.   Besides, what does the "threat of sanctions" due to any program other than UM.   Kansas and LSU are under the darkest of sanctions clouds and they both made the tourney and continue to recruit with zero issues.

There are two ways to see this.  On one hand, straight arrow Beilein is a bad fit for a shady school. On the other hand, Beilein's straight-arrow reputation brings huge value for a shady program that wants to make over its reputation-whether that make-over is just a facade or a real effort at reform.

The question is not, "What can Beilein afford, and where?" but rather, "Where does John Beilein like to spend his, and his family's, time?" When you are that rich and in demand, you have choices and can wait until you get an offer at a place and location that you really like.

If he already had an attachment to Arizona, I could see there being a small chance that he goes there. Otherwise, no way.

I mean, who can argue with his point that Juwan Howard isn't focused enough on basketball? He's only spent the entirety of the past 30 years playing and coaching the sport at the highest level, so clearly he's been slacking off. Obviously, the fact that we only got to the Elite Eight is proof positive of that lack of focus. Right?

For one, he's looking at possible sanctions the minute he'd step in, so that's unlikely.  Two, Arizona seemed totally fine with Miller cheating for years so my guess is culturally that's not a great fit for Beilein.  Third, I forget that these recruiting/news services are not, in fact, journalistic entities so you just get random, unsourced claims of very nebulous concepts passed off as more concrete claims.  So in this case, Beilein is a "candidate" because someone at Arizona told someone else they'd consider him.

So no, nothing to see here.

If this was an attempt at redemption after the Al Kaline post, it’s another “swing and a miss”!

The link takes us to an article whose sole link between Coach B and Arizona is his name included in a list of 10+ “candidates” on a message board.

Fake news man. Even if by some miracle Coach B ended up in AZ, this would be a weak “me first” post at best.

I am surprised he hasn't found a job in this cycle. I wonder if he is actually looking. I felt like DePaul would have been a perfect fit (other than their history of cheating). They have been awful forever in the Big East. Beilein could have broiught in Novak / Douglass level recruits, finish 4th in the Big East and be their best coach in 50 years.

Contrary to what basically everyone has thought (that he would coach again), it is starting to look like that won't be the case. Maybe the right job hasn't come open yet (IU and Marquette looked pretty good IMO) but it also kind of seems that ADs are hesitant to hire a guy in his late 60s who may or may not have left his last college job in part because he was sick of dirty recruiting and/or guys leaving earlier than initially expected.

Agreed. I think the age thing and the fact that Juwan Howard seemed to set a new template in place is probably working against Beilein. That's why I thought DePaul would be a mutually beneficial place for him. If he can give someone 4-5 years of respectability make a couple tournaments they would be in a much better place when it came time to hire the guy to take them to the next level.

That definitely makes sense from the standpoint of a school wanting Beilein to elevate them and a place like DePaul fits that bill. I'm just not sure he'd be looking for a total reclamation project like that. I know that's been more or less his MO throughout his coaching career but for his last gig you'd think he'd want more of a shot at immediate success. That's just total speculation on my part, though.

Ummmm....no

That's why I was laughing at that comment.  I believe Meyer coached at least a few years into the 80s and his son took over and did decently for a couple of years before the whole thing went off the rails.

While the elder Meyer was there, DePaul was a top 10 program. I'd say they haven't been anything special for about 35 years now.
