Recruiting in the offseason question

Submitted by trueblue262 on

A question for recruiting "gurus" on the board.

I know January is usually a pretty big month for recruiting as far as "closing" on some prospects. But it seems in recent years that the basketball team had more home games on Sat or Sunday that the recruits would go to. This year, they are either mid week, or away.

I guess, my question is, for a big weekend of visitors, is this a bad thing, or a positive as it would get them more time to tour facilities and meet with coaches.

If Cam Newton wins the Super Bowl this year he will join Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, and our own Charles Woodson as the only players to win a Heisman, National Championship, and a Super Bowl.

Of those 3 Marcus Allen is the only player to also be named SB MVP.

Short answer: no its not a bad thing. We don't really have a "big" weekend of visitors per say in January. And it looks like we have a fair share of weekend games in february. I'm sure not going to basketball games is not going to impact recruits that much.

Apparently it goes back to England.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_history_of_apple_pie
One combination of flavors common in the nineteenth century and earlier, which was referred to in English novels of the time, was apple pie and cheese (usually sharp cheddar cheese). This was because apples were not always sweet; the leading sweet variety, Red Delicious, wasn't developed until 1868. The sharpness of the cheese combines with the tartness of the apple and so produces an appealing taste. While its popularity has waned as modern pies have become sweeter, some people still enjoy this combination. In Yorkshire, for example, apple pies are baked with cheddar cheese or served with a hard crumbly cheese such as Cheshire alongside.

I don't think this is really a positive or a negative. Yes, its great for basketball recruits to see a full capacity crowd for a B10 game at crisler, but at the same time their not visiting for a basketball game. When I was at the Deleware State game the recruits were only there for maybe 20 minutes total. They came in during the first half and were gone by halftime.

Truthfully, I don't know that big recruiting weekends often center around basketball games for the current class. This is anecdotal, but it seems like the big basketball game weekends are typically more of a chance to get the *next* class together. So we'll probably see some 2017 kids coming to Ann Arbor in groups, but it won't have much of an effect on the 2016 class.

I do like the OPs indirect notion of a key recruting weekend for what seems to always be,  five or so top elite players waiting until the end.  A big basketball game at Crisler, could only help, I imagine.   Having players like Gary, Little, etc, all visiting and seeing a big game, could be effective.

It's definitely not a bad idea. I just don't know that it's a regular thing to get a bunch of big-time recruits in for a basketball weekend. Last year may have been a bit of a fluke, because Jim Harbaugh was hired late, offered some kids late, and simply had to jam-pack a bunch of official visitors in during the month of January (Roquan Smith, Shelton Johnson, Zach Gentry, etc.).

This year there are a few kids taking January officials, but a lot of them took their officials in the fall. My guess is that the official visits taking place in January are more likely to be lower-ranked players that Michigan is trying to pull in late because they've missed on other prospects, or just to fill in the blanks. For example, players like Khaleke Hudson, Chase Allen, and Josh Uche are all guys who aren't particularly highly ranked that Michigan has started recruiting relatively recently. Jordan Fuller is perhaps the only "big-time" guy who's going to official in January (Rashan Gary is supposed to come back on an unofficial).
