Recruit ratings and Caleb Lavey
For all those freaking out about the recent recruit rankings and Michigan targets, here is further evidence that there is little to worry about at this point.
Caleb Lavey is not in the rivals 250. Look at his offer sheet and tackles at one of the most storied football schools in the country. http://michigan.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=90966&sport=1 .
I'm pretty sure the coaches of these colleges know something Rivals doesn't.
Let's keep in mind that Rivals had Will Campbell ranked very high and scouts had him barely in their top 250. These are all subjective and completely up to individual interpretation. It does not even matter how they will fit into a certain program or anything it is just what one group of people think of a guy (a guy they have probably never even seen play other than on a highlight reel). Tom Lemming at least goes to watch each player he ranks although he still is not great at picking these kids either.
will was a 5 star on scout & rivals I thought
He was, it was ESPN i believe that didnt have him ranked in the top 200 I believe
For Jay Hopson is on the case (read: go ahead and fear)!
As I posted right after signing day about Hopson, he whiffed on every recruit that he tried to reel in from the 2009 class including late decommits Pearlie Graves and DeQuinta Jones:

Hopefully he'll be a bit more productive this recruiting class, but don't count on it.
Another note: if you scroll back to 2006 and 2007, he whiffed equally as much on top prospects. At least he's consistent. I thought this guy was supposed to own Mississippi. As of right now, it looks like he's a better recruiter for Houston.

he whiffed on top recruits in 2006 and 2007? You do know that hopson was coaching at southern miss and not USC, right?
His Arkansas recruiting coach is Tim Horton.
Here's a Southern Guy trying to lure Southern recruits up to the Northern arctic, or at least that how Southerners probaly view Michigan. That's no easy feat. Give him credit for keeping these kids interested up till signing day. The success of this staff in the South run rings around anything Carr did in his era. Give it time. The more Southern kids that succeed in Rod's program the more he'll have success in getting kids to entertain and commit to Michigan.

i feel like the same topics reappear once a week. why arent we getting better players? and the coaching staff knows what they are doing

Offers from all of the big-time programs mean a lot more than what Rivals and Scout say, imo. Do those guys have football backgrounds? What qualifies them to judge talent?

I don't have the time, but I wish I could somehow get some data on how successful players are with regards to OFFERS vs. RANKINGS.
For example, does the above come true more often than not? If a guy is ranked pretty low but has an excellent offer list, is he more likely to be successful than a guy with a high ranking but a less impressive offer list?

That would be interesting, and very telling for someone to do. Junior Hemmingway is an example of a guy with a low rating by Rivals, and really impressive offers. Thus far, he hasn't produced, but he also hasn't been healthy. Mostly, high offers=high rating, but that is not always the case. M Rob is a prime example, thus far.
