A Reason to Drink on a Tuesday: Looking at our hockey team's season

An interesting comparison of % minutes this season certain teams have spent in leads, tied or behind thus far (compiled by an msu fan, of course).  Just think where our team would be if they didn't have a habit of blowing multiple-goal leads.  Still - hope remains.

One would think that over the course of a long season (82 games) Michigan would end up near the top of the season standings due to regression to the mean. They are the kind of team where if you are a higher seed you don't want to draw them but if you were a lower seed you would want to play Michigan. A bit of a paradoxical team.

Man, that's rougher than I expected. Only losing 16% of the minutes, but holding a 17-12-3 record.

What's your data source for this and did CHN make those charts? Would be interested to plot time losing vs. record

Just in that first chart you can see teams with similar % of time losing are #1 BC, #3 NoDak, and #5 Denver....

Thank you!! Exactly why this season has been so frustrating. My wife and I started joking, "Oh no, we have a 3 goal lead. We're in trouble." Seeing this graph verifies how I felt with the eye test.

During the PSU series, B1G+ announcers also shared that our goal differential in the first period and second period were somewhere around 25 each, while we were around -6 in the third period (exact numbers escape me but the point is there).

If we didn't blow leads in just 2 or so top games, we'd be safely under the bubble. That aside, as lhglrkwg notes, we should be in "#1 BC, #3 NoDak, and #5 Denver" company if we didn't blow leads. Self-destruction at key moments has been killer.

Drink up and I hope we bop those gophers for two Ws this weekend.

This makes me happier about the relative dip compared to the last two years. Of course some of these blown games come down to coaching/players but our record is deflated and not representative of our performances for the majority of the time on ice
