Rank the Coaching Candidates

Submitted by umhero on May 15th, 2019 at 8:21 AM

I've created a poll where you can rank the coaching candidates in order of desirability. There are a lot on the list so I suggest you just rank down to Yaklich. This will allow us to create a community "Yachlich Line."

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YWQLGB2

Once this has enough data I will post a diary with some results. Feel free to share with other Michigan fans. Maybe we can provide Warde Manuel a pulse of the fan base.

Surprised people had Buzz Williams below their Yaklich line. He's a pretty good coach IMO. Not gonna happen as TAMU will throw the money at him to keep him.

What dream land are people living in that think Stevens, Wright or Bennett would consider leaving.

They wouldn’t leave for UCLA or IU but they’re gonna leave for us? Come on.

I doubt they’d even leave for Duke Kansas UNC or UK.

Stevens has a top 3 NBA job and speaks highly about coaching there. Wright, east coaster, rebuilt Nova into a powerhouse that will dominate the Big East, a much easier conference relative to the BIG. Only job he would think about would be the Sixers down the street and that’s not happening for at least another year.

Bennett didn’t go to Wisconsin when he had the chance. He’s certainly not leaving now that he’s established UVA as a legit threat to Duke and UNC in the ACC

Donovan or Marshall would be home runs in my opinion.

Pretty surprising results IMO. I personally had Tony Bennett as #1. Seeing him running fourth right now was not expected. Agree with earlier comment that Buzz Williams should be above Yak. Proven head coach who competed in a brutal ACC. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed. However given how much our fanbase clings to "culture fit", Bennett seems like top choice. He is in Beilein territory with regards to cleanliness, and has outperformed any other ACC coach over the past 5-7 years. Jay Wright may have an additional title, but is facing lower level competition. Bennett is the closest you can get to Beilein of the options listed.

Good point.

I realized that the analysis is flawed at the end, that's why I plan to put together a Diary once we have meaningful data.

I realized there were so many choices that it made sense to reassure people they don't have to rank everyone if they don't want to.

Just assign unranked candidates a value of either "18" for last, or in the case of where someone ranked say 6 candidates and left 7-18 blank, the mean of the unranked is then 12.5 which you could use.

The 12.5 is probably more statistically accurate, but I don't know if the site allows for that type of setup.

I agree he's unlikely to leave, and even if he did I would assume there's questions about the depth of his national recruiting ties v. west coast. I think he's a slightly more realistic option than Jay Wright, Brad Stevens or Tony Bennett. Probably in the grouping with Donovan or Beard, who I would also lump into the "long shot, but not totally out of the question" group, unfortunately.

Buzz would not continue the culture Beilein has created.  As a long time resident of Wisconsin, he developed a reputation of the "buzz cut" during his time at Marquette.  Questionable recruiting practices of getting rid of unwanted players.

Gregg Marshall went to 4 straight tournaments at Winthrop. He then followed a 2 year drought with 3 straight appearances again.

At Wichita St. Marshall missed the tournament his first 4 years. He then made the tournament 7 straight years including a Final Four, a 1 seed as an undefeated regular season team, and another Sweet Sixteen. He missed the tournament this past year after losing 12 players from his roster and 2 assistants, and still had an incredible mid season turnaround and an NIT semi-final berth.

Dude's only 56. If he wanted the job I don't understand how he'd be under the Yak line.

To the 3 persons who had Moses at #1, 2 and 3 respectively: please give up your UM fanhood and never return.

PS. Not really. You are free to choose whomever you like, but please reevaluate your life choices and try to do better from here on out.

I don't understand how Bobby Hurley is not on the list?  He turned Buffalo around (took over a 14-20 (7-9) club and instantly went to the Tourney in his only 2 years).  Brought in Nate Oats to coach (and learn) under him.  Then went to a sliding ASU and after a rough transition has been better ever single year. Yes the Pac10 sucks, but he has risen to #2 in conference.  He isn't my first choice, but with names like Moser out there...  He may even be slightly above the Yak line.

Interesting exercise.  Hopefully, Warde will take it under consideration if he sees the results.  I doubt he will, but we can hope!

I think in the end it will be someone below the home run guys (Stevens, Wright, Donovan) but above the assistants level, e.g. Howard or Marshall. Michigan probably has Moser in that range too, unfortunately.

I think I'd be cool with Marshall.

I put Yak 12th, but that's higher than I ranked Howard. I just don't see it with him.

I have Bennett first. Unlike Donovan and Stevens, he's in college and has been recruiting for the last 4 years. And he has an NCAA title (sorry Stevens) in the last 13 years (sorry Donovan).

I also ranked Buzz higher than a lot of people. I think he's a good coach, he kept Marquette up after Crean left, and he improved at VT every year. Pulling him would be a coup.

Nice list guessing Gregg Marshall is the one, if he wants a change is the guy. Some of those will turn it down because their fine with where their coaching, the guys coaching the NBA aren’t coming, and nobody else on the list will have a final four plus a No. 1 seed in different seasons but Gregg Marshall. And did it at a mid major!

this is really interesting, but not as an actual gauge of who we "should" hire.  i maintain that the vast majority of us (myself included) are way less informed about what makes a good hire than we think we are...lots of hires that look great at the time don't work for reasons that we chose to either ignore or couldn't have possibly known (interpersonal dynamics, sex vampires, etc.), and vice-versa.  no organization should ever ever ever ever ever make a decision based on polls, particularly if it's a poll of message board idiots (again - myself included).

to me, the interesting part of the poll is the bottom.  we hate, hate, hate the idea of porter moser, for lots and lots of reasons.  i mean, we're idiots, but we're not stupid, and it's pretty clear that hiring porter moser would be Not Popular, no matter what warde manuel might say at an introductory press conference.

should he listen to us?  dear god, no.  should he brace himself for a shitstorm, if he hires him?

oh yeah.

Marshall feels low. Looks very bi-modal, people are either ranking him right around 8 (probably just after the moon-shot guys) or in the last two. Are those people who just didn't bother ranking him and that's where he ends up or do they really think he is that low?

From a winning perspective, I think he's a decent option. He has just struck me as the polar opposite of Beilein and kind of like Izzo with his tooting and hollering on the sideline. Also there was some really bad press about his wife the last few years with being wasted in the stands and yelling at fans and players. I believe she had to be escorted out at the NCAA tournament a few years back. Just not sure that's the kind of people I want at the top of the program. Putting all of that aside, I think he's not a terrible choice in my mind.

1.  Yaklich/Washington

2.  Hefty hefty raise for the assistant

3.  Do like Harbaugh or Beilein:  Hire the best young offensive coach in the country

Still have money to play with.
