QB depth chart update
I posted a nugget from umbig11 over on the TTB message board. It's just a small nugget, but I feel like it's noteworthy, considering the spring game performances of the quarterbacks.

Disappointing about Peters, but exciting to hear about McCaffrey. Also, I know there is a very likely transfer to come, but is Alex Malzone even practicing with the team anymore?

Probably a Brother Rice thing (see Grant Perry, Jon Rescke). I half /s as a Shamrock.

It's never a good thing to be compared to Sam Snead's putting.

know who Sam Snead was. (Slammin' Sammy has left the building) Time to put on my leopard spotted fedora.

Slamming Sammy was great in WWE Raw Tag Team Championship.

This is not something I am concerned about. Speight may start here for two more seasons. His Sophomore season was pretty good, and Harbaugh will get the arrows going up. Peters and McCaffery have a long time to battle for who the successor will be. Joe Milton and the 2019 True Freshman aren't even on campus yet. We will have a good one ready for when Speight goes Pro.

that we're going to nab one very good QB prospect per class. There are going to be a lot of serious battles for the starting job. Some we have very high hopes for will never play. It's a fool's errand to guess who they'll be in advance and it's far too early to write off Peters.
That being said, I am very high on McCaffrey's potential. Players with outstanding bloodlines seem to often outplay their rankings. I'd guess it has a lot to do with having family that knows what it takes to be successful, not just genetics. I hope we're able to nab his younger brother for 2019.

We will be getting some extra QBs as a result, two in a class.and/or grad transfers.

Agreed. The few moments Speight played as a RS Fr. it did not look like he would be the future for Michigan at QB. Then when O'korn transferred in everyone thought he would take the job, but Speight progressed and won the job. It's way too early to write the conclusion on Peter's, but whether he ever starts for Michigan or not, we are in good hands with Harbaugh, and the stable of QBs he has and will bring in.

If Speight goes down, just use your powers to raise him back up. Wighton Speight.
August 25th, 2017 at 9:14 AM ^
You mean Wighton Ulizio Speight
August 25th, 2017 at 9:34 AM ^
Not sure you want to give him the name W.U.S.

They already started last winter, but the spring game quelled them.

Kid has some impressive upside. I would've like to see him in action at some point.
August 25th, 2017 at 1:50 PM ^
You'll see Peters get a lot of playing time against Cincinnatti, AF, Purdue and Rutgers at a minimum.
August 25th, 2017 at 8:58 AM ^
Are you saying there were Peters transfer rumors in winter? If so, I never heard that.

There were small rumblings. If I remember right it was more of a homesick/college transition thing more so than him not being happy with his spot or status on the team. I may not be 100% correct on that because the situation only consisted of a few passing mentions.
August 25th, 2017 at 9:08 AM ^
Yes.
August 25th, 2017 at 8:29 AM ^
must be one of those guys that tears it up in practice when guys are going 80% or so, because his practice reports have always been glowing. Doesn't really jive with the Indiana game at all.
August 25th, 2017 at 8:32 AM ^
Do you recall the weather that game?
August 25th, 2017 at 9:02 AM ^
Imagine if the Iowa game was Speight's only sample size.

Not to be that guy, but so many people misremember that game based on the images of the snow. The snow didn't start until the beginning of the 4th quarter, and even before that O'korn was like 5-13 for 46 yards. He did have the big run which was crucial, but his lack of moving the ball through the air was a problem far before the snow came. I agree that it was a small sample size of one game, but people need to take Indiana for what it was: a showcase of O'Korn being unable to move the ball.

I remember it being very windy that day in the stadium. That doesn't let him off the hook completely but the conditions were tough. 140 yards passing that day would have been a respectable number.
August 25th, 2017 at 8:33 AM ^
I've said this before, but the thing you have to remember about that Indiana game is that it was a tough situation for a first-time starting QB. O'Korn played high school ball in Florida and college ball in Texas. When he played as a backup early in 2016, it was in nice weather.
Then when he got his first start, there was a snowstorm and swirling winds.
I'm not saying weather was the only issue there, but I think it's a little unfair to judge him entirely from that. After all, he did play well as a backup at other times last year. Additionally, it's not like just anyone can go in and look good in garbage time against Hawaii and Rutgers. Morris played in garbage time, too, and he was still terrible.

almost all of his issues against Indiana were not weather related. If it was weather related, you'd mainly be criticizing him for inaccurate passes, passes getting blown off course, etc. And while that applies to a couple of his passes, the bigger issue was the dude acted like he'd never seen a pass rush in his life, and would do dumb things like bug out and run 15 yards backwards. That aint a weather issue.
August 25th, 2017 at 9:41 AM ^
Weather affects people in different ways. Maybe his hands were frozen and he didn't think he had a great grip on the ball. Maybe his deep routes came open, but he didn't think he could get the ball there because of his grip or the wind, so he bugged out. You never know.

These are good points that I hadn't considered. I always did have a hard time mentally reconcliling his performance against IU with the video footage of his play at Houston.
You have pursuaded me to change my position on O'Korn from "IU proved he couldn't get it done" to "still not optimistic but possible that IU game was not representative."
August 25th, 2017 at 8:43 AM ^
He looked like a short dog in tall weeds. It's also not like Michigan was trying to throw it every play and he was missing guys because of the cold and precipitation.
I hope I am wrong, and that he is legit good, and if he needs to come in for a play or a series if needed, there is minimal dropoff.

Indiana was also a pretty good defense last year. I believe they finished the year ranked 31st Nationally in defensive S&P+ and 7th in the B1G. Not exactly the ideal team to get your first ever start against.
Edit: 7th in the B1G

he was awful at Houston that led him to the benching.

"jive" turkey?
August 25th, 2017 at 8:30 AM ^
As someone who was on the Peters bandwagon, I'm a little shocked and disappointed that Peters has fallen that far. He is still only a RS Freshman, so there is no doubt that he could get more vocal and have a better command of the offense in the future. If Peters never figuers it out and McCaffrey pushes ahead of him next year, that would be one of the biggest wastes of talents in the history of UM Quarterbacks.
