That's fine.  There is a discussion to be had on whether the penalties should have been dialed back or not.

But even if the penalties were not dialed back, these would be true:

(1) Today's date is 26-February-2020, the sanctions would have been over by this point anyway.

(2) Penn State football would still have a lot of fans, and a number of rich boosters.  They would still have the capacity to pay.

(3) The various victims have received a settlement by the school.  What issues do you exactly have with how they have been paid?  Do you disagree with the method of payment?  Should they get paid in one lump sum?  An annuity that pays the victim yearly but is in effect a one-time cost for the school?  A non-annuity that is annual payments from the school until the victim's death?   Until the victim's great-great-grandchildren are all dead?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I think the latter questions are valid questions.

Read Brian's "unverified voracity" post today.  James Franklin was making less than Mel Tucker. Every agent picked up the phone to call ADs around the country the moment Tucker signed that contract.

Does not apply as much to Harbaugh as he was already getting paid. If anything happens at Michigan, it will more likely be an increase in assistant and support staff pay.

Yeah, given Mel Tucker, I'm actually surprised Franklin's new numbers aren't higher.

His 2020 total guaranteed salary is (marginally) lower with this new contract, and his buyouts are a decent a bit higher.

Of course, these Coaches renegotiate their contracts every year or two anyway.

(On a side note: I love how Franklin's "base salary" is $500K and his "supplemental pay" is $4.9MM.  I need to figure out how to get "supplemental pay at a 10x multiplier vs my base salary" from my bosses)

Anyone else see from Brian's post that the retention clause kicks in before Jan 1 each year? Seems like a really stupid time to have given he is expected to be in a NY bowl game if not the playoff.  Seemed much smarter to have it Jan 31 each year. That way he doesn't coach through the bowl, collect his bonus then leave for another job.

This is always an argument that comes up and yet I don’t understand why.  Recruits don’t monitor or care about coaches contracts.  Coaches are either fired or retire, their contracts dont just “expire”.  Please give me an example of the last coach in the BIG that coaches up until the last day of his contract and then walked out because it wasn’t renewed.  Does anyone really think Manuel is contemplating the end of the Harbaugh era?  Answer:no.

I agree with you in part--but he really is one of the worst game day coaches in college football. I think if he'd have been average at this he could have beaten Ohio State three years in a row and had his 2017 team in the playoffs.

The good news for Franklin is that he's good enough at recruiting and managing his staff to get into position to make bad game day decisions.

I read since 2016, starting his 3rd year when he arguably got it going, only Saban and Dano have a better winning percentage. That conveniently leaves out OSU though and possibly Oklahoma. He's had some bone headed game theory decisions, but basically every coach does. It's amazing how many people here thought he was worse than Hoke and has had a horseshoe up his ass for 6 years. It was seen as a negative that he hired Moorhead because surely that's the only reason they were any good. Then they didn't careen off a cliff when he left. Surprise!

Looking at this thread though, maybe some of the criticism has leveled off. Brian expecting a nosedive has looked as off as those 2 or 3 years he kept talking about how MSU basketball was going to tank.
