Portal needs

Submitted by SalvatoreQuattro on January 12th, 2024 at 8:53 AM

Michigan is down to six scholarship WRs if we include incoming freshman. Corner is also a need. Quarterback may be a need. Tight end…No?

Any other areas of need that I missed?

There appear to be some good players left in the portal. Would like another corner(rumblings of Denver Warren to UM) and a receiver or two.

If I'm JJ, I make it plain to the coaching staff that I'm not even considering returning unless we go get a high level WR (or two) out of the portal.

We just won the National Championship so any complaints about style are pretty weak.  That said, I'd love to see JJ come back and to make the most of his presence and to do right by him and his future prospects, I'd like to see us put in some more passing.  Michigan has a 3 yards and a cloud of dust tradition, but we also have AC, Des, Derrick Alexander, Braylon, etc.  Nico Collins, DPJ and Ronnie Bell should be on that list too, but we never threw the damn ball.

When Cornelius Johnson had those two bombs against OSU in 22 I thought we'd finally unleashed JJ and were going to turn the corner in our passing game, but didn't get much of that this year. Our play action passes to the corner of the end zone were always such a flex.  "You want to load up the box?  I can throw a TD bomb anytime I want."

I'll take the OSU victory and National Championship, but I'd love a few more passes.

Sanity check--Is it an illusion that we don't pass much?  Colston Loveland and Roman Wilson had some big catches in the NC game.

Looks like our final Run/Pass ratio was 563-361. 61%/39%

OSU had like 431 to 400.  52%/48%  Roughly six more passes per game than us.  We had 8.88 yards per passing attempt and OSU had 8.75.  We had 4.5 yards per rushing attempt to their 4.2.

We are all set in the secondary

Hill, Waller, McBurrows, Kody Jones Myles Pollard

Rod Moore? Paige?

Sabb, Zeke Berry, Hillman

Could have used the kid from IU at WR though

Could use a pure blocking TE like a Joel Hongiford

The question on portal needs in the OP raises interesting issues that should get their own discussion regarding Michigan's roster building strategy.  Issues of how to use NLI, where and how Michigan thinks they can compete for the type of players they need, areas where they think they are probably going to lose battles for certain types of players, etc., etc.   It has worked very well for three years.  But CFB is always a shifting landscape.  What adjustments, if any, should be made going forward.  ANyway. I will wait until deeper in the off-season to post on it, in part because so much depends on whether JJ and/or JH are returning.

Only thing I think is a need is WR.

Pretty much at any position you're looking for a depth piece. TE you could just try Hibner going into his 5th year. CB Harris will come back from injury then Waller and Hill. You already got a LB to go with Hausman and Rolder. DT you're looking for a 4th guy, DE also looking for a backup.

If the staff stays completely intact or mostly intact I've quit worrying about roster construction. There are none better in the business at filling needs through portal and developing talent that came in. I hate seeing Amorion in the portal but reaks of possibly seeing writing on the wall to me.

The characteristic that matters more than any other in a player, more than their skill or previous statistics, is that of a guy who buys into the team first mentality. A guy willing to do what is asked of him, even if it means getting less targets as a wr, or sharing playing time with others.

Spring will bring another giant portal window. And i’m sure 1 or 2 useful players  who haven’t entered it yet will be enticed by Michigan. But no tampering!

I really wanted Michigan to go after Flemming. He never lived up to his recruiting ranking out of high school, but the guy is a ferocious blocker. Would have fit in perfectly with what Michigan likes to do.

Freddy Moore is a name to look out for next season at WR. Wouldn't surprise me to see them give Hillman a shot on offense.

I’d like to know what Penn St is paying, they’ve flipped a corner from Georgia and a corner from Florida. Both were four stars coming out of high school. Fleming from Ohio St, Rucci from Wisconsin as well

Just give me, JJ, Donovan, two WRs (one possession guy and one lanky, leapy guy), Trente Jones, and a starting All-B1G level CB.

We can make everything else work with what we have returning.
