Players using Cartier 'Buffs' Sunglasses as Motivational Prize for Creating Turnovers

Submitted by Maizinator on September 27th, 2022 at 11:53 PM

Saw DJ Turner wearing the sunglasses after his interception Saturday.  I wasn't aware the players were using them as motivation.

Apparently, it was Will Johnson's idea and he secured them from Zeidman's Jewelry.  They player gets to wear them after each turnover and the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season keeps them as a trophy.

Hope we are seeing a lot more of these shades in the upcoming games!!!

I know Cartier claims that the buffalo horns used to make the frames for these glasses are "responsibly sourced" from like naturally dying buffalo or something (this is where the "Buffs" comes from if you didn't know), but call me crazy for not trusting the ethics of a multi billion dollar luxury goods company, especially when the demand for these seems to have gone through the roof due to popularity over social media.  What are they going to do, say "whoops, cant ship any more of these for a while, waiting for some buffalos to die of old age"?

Edit:  Post was overly cynical.  Yes, I'm aware buffalos are used for food and this isn't anywhere near a direct comparison to something like the ivory trade.

In the age of NIL we should be able to give a player a pair for every turnover. What's with just having one for the whole season. Come on lets get 20 of these and start handing them out.

Anything they can have fun with is cool.

At places like Bama, O$U, A$M however, everyone gets these glasses during recruiting.

Sign and their whole family gets a fleet of Mercedes.

Between the bag man and NIL, these gimmicks and competitions can remain fun for the players but the monetary value won't be too significant.

Turnover Winner at UGA probably getting a new house or Ferrari this year.

As someone that grew up with inner-city Cartier culture (commonly referred to as “Cartis” or “Yas”/pronounced Yays)in the 90s, I can see perspective from both angles.

Inner-city Detroit has always had an infatuation with high-end fashion accessories, namely shoes (Mauri gators), chains (Byzantine Chains), glasses (Cartier glasses), etc……things that we sort of made fashionable for urban fashion trends before anyone else. It’s symbolic of Detroit culture and something we’re proud of. So there’s a sense of pride that one of the most impoverished cities in America is a trendsetter for urban fashion trends that are still popular 30-35 years strong.

OTOH, i vividly remember the 90s - people outside of gas stations along West 7 mile and Livernois (Warren to Joy Road during the weekend street races) waiting for a naive person to pull-up so they could rob them for Cartier’s. It’s a very real thing in Detroit proper.

So while I embrace the Detroit culture/trendsetting, I’m also cognizant of the potential dangers associated with it. Like anything, use common sense.

Honestly, the fact that a player who is from Detroit came up with this idea and according to the article is the one taking care of the buffs, it's a great way for the kids to have fun and promote competition. It's not like it something that Harbaugh came up with as a way to motivate the team and he's trying to be cool but it's just cringe. This is something for the team by the team. A fantastic way to bring local culture, motivation, competition, and results on the field all together. Let them celebrate how they want to.

I had a $175 pair of Oakleys and lost them. I bought a couple pairs of cheap $25 shades to replace them, and they were fine.

A year later, out of the blue at a family get together at the cottage, my niece hands me my long lost pair of Oakleys. She found them under the seat of the car that I had sold her.

Two hours later, we went for a swim off the pontoon, and I wore my Oakleys, the same way I had worn my cheap shades a hundred times. They fell off my face and sunk to the bottom of the lake, never to be seen again.

tl/dr: cheap shades float, expensive shades sink.

To all the old people being crotchety and complaining about designer sunglasses:

These are the types of things  that the younger generation get excited about and have fun with. It's like you're trying to discourage them from creating a competitive culture and having fun while doing it.  It puts eyes on our program for youth and recruits that might otherwise not know much about Michigan.  In other words, whether you like it or not, it helps our recruiting footprint.
