A Pitt Playcall for Michigan's Offense
I know that this probably doesn't deserve its own thread but I didn't really know where else to post it.
I was watching a video about the possible Big East/Big 12 merger, and around 2:40 of the video is a play by Pitt that made me immediately think that we need to steal this play. It looks like a zone read where the receiver on the side the QB would run to runs almost like a delay fade route. With Denard at QB this play would be another awesome play like the Fake QB Draw play.
That's all.

Ugh... jesus christ. You realize who the OC for Pitt is right?

Don't bring JC into this . . . Just ask yourself "WWDD?" What would Denard do?

Divorce is for idiots who get married.
I am a loner, Dotty. A rebel.

There's a lotta things about me you don't know anything about, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you shouldn't understand.

OFFENSIVE PLAYCALLING IS THE ONLY CRITERION FOR GOOD COACHING!!!!!1!!!

I don't think I ever once saw a comment that said that Calvin Magee sucked, let alone one that said he should be fired.
Or is Rich Rodriguez coaching at Pitt now?
September 20th, 2011 at 2:30 PM ^
Magee is the co-coordinator with Jay Norvell. With Graham there too it's kind of a mixed bag of spread-goodiness.
September 20th, 2011 at 2:39 PM ^
Absolutely - I just don't accept the premise that we were calling for Magee's head. He was an unfortunate casualty.
September 20th, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
Whoever this mystery man is, I bet he's never coached a talent quite like Denard!
September 20th, 2011 at 1:20 PM ^
Haha yes I know who is the OC there. How does that mean it's not a good playcall or somehow off limits?
September 20th, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
It's just that you are saying that a play from RR's playbook is perfect for RR's players.
September 20th, 2011 at 1:28 PM ^
The play may not have been in RR's playbook. It very well could have been, and they may have been planning to use it for Denard this year. However since they didn't use it and Magee is at a different school, it could also be that he drew this one up after it was never implemented/practiced at Michigan.
But regardless of when the play was drawn up, how many people here knew about this play? It's not like it was a clip of a Michigan highlight & I was saying it's a good idea. I see how initially it could look like a DERP kind of comment, but given that we've never seen that play before and we don't know for sure that this play was ever practiced at Michigan I don't think anyone here can really say, "Obviously."
September 20th, 2011 at 1:39 PM ^
It really isn't that different from the play that I commented on below. It's essentially the play that we scored on a bunch last season, except he reads a different player and he rolls out while the play develops. I still think it's a better executed play, but it's not like it's a new concept that hasn't been implemented into the play calling this year already.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:31 PM ^
Our players have probably already practiced this given the OC for Pitt is Calvin Magee.
September 20th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
Possibly. But since it was never done in a game, I'm guessing Gorgeous Al Borges wasn't told about the play by Denard. Maybe though. I personally am hoping so. It looks like a killer play.

Somewhat related, I was thinking that if we ever want an "OMG, WTF is going on?" opponent reaction for a play, it might be interesting to bring in Devin mid-series and slide Denard out wide. Even if Devin just carried it up the middle, defensive confusion/paranoia always seems to be good for a few extra yards.

OSU and Auburn ran plays like that with Newton and Pryor, except they actually threw them the ball. I think it would be awesome to have them both out there, but I don't know how I feel about 6'0 195 Denard going for a jump ball in the end zone with a short field like Pryor and Newton did.

I was screaming this all last year with Tate and Denard.
September 20th, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^
threw Denard a pass in the '09 OSU game, right? Denard had him beat but Tate underthrew it and it was picked.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
You mean like the first play here?
September 20th, 2011 at 12:51 PM ^
That was my favorite play of the year. I knew what it was before even clicking because of your use of "first play". Yea, I smiled.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
Similar, but if you watch the video, you will see it is different. Denard would actually rollout after the fake hand off, pulling the corner in to stop him and leaving the wide out open, as opposed to pulling safeties in to leave the slot open. I actually think it's a better-executed play.

Of course 19,000 people jumped your shit because it's PITT. But all things aside, it's a good play. One that we could definitely run.
It's a run/pass option where if the CB doesn't bite, you can just pick up a first down and get out of bounds. If he does, well, you get what the video showed you.
Thanks for sharing!
