Pickin' and Grinnin - The Super Bowl - Who You Got?

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on February 10th, 2023 at 3:15 PM

Mates,

One last football game this season (except for you USFL fans), the Super Bowl is two days away.   Game time is 6:30 on Fox with the game being played in AZ.  Philly started out as a 2 1/2 pt favorite but is now a 1 1/2 pt fav.  Two great young QB's, both with late injuries though.  Hurts hurt his shoulder but seemed pretty stout in the games since then.  Meanwhile, Mahomes has that high-ankle sprain and was limping badly during the AFC Championship game.   Will the 2 week break be enough to heal it?  Will he take the needle?   I note that neither QB is on their respective team's Injury Report.

Some interesting side stories.  The Kelce brothers playing against one another.   Isaiah Pacheco, formerly of our arch-rival Rutger, is getting good playing time for the Chiefs.

Some stats:

EAGLES OFFENSE: OVERALL (3), RUSH (5), PASS (9), SCORING (3).

EAGLES DEFENSE: OVERALL (2), RUSH (T16), PASS (1), SCORING (8).

CHIEFS OFFENSE: OVERALL (1), RUSH (20), PASS (1), SCORING (1)

CHIEFS DEFENSE: OVERALL (11), RUSH (8), PASS (18), SCORING (16)

TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Eagles plus-8; Chiefs minus-3.

Today's questions:

1.  Who is going to win?

2.  Will you watch and, if so, will you have or attend some sort of special get together?

Have a great weekend.  Lots of sunshine forecast up and down the state this weekend.  Been an exceptionally cloudy winter.  Time to shake some of that off.

I want UM alum to do well; beyond that whateva as long as it is a good game. To your questions

1. The Eagles

2. I will watch most of it; not going anywhere.

Eagles are the most talented roster in the NFL, but KC has Mahomes of course.

If Mahomes were 100% healthy I think the Chiefs win, but I don't think his high ankle sprain will be completely healed by Sunday evening and that Eagles front 4 is going to do enough to disrupt a slightly gimpy quarterback.

28-17 Eagles over the Chiefs.

As an Eagles fan who has read almost every analysis/prediction these past 2 weeks and who has seen all of their games and a lot of Chiefs games, I have come to one conclusion

DO NOT BET THE SPREAD.

Literally anything that is not a blowout either way would not surprise me.

I think betting the over is OK but even there you have good defenses and potential injury issues along with one team incentivized to run, so again I have no idea.

Fwiw I thought the Eagles would lose to the Pats and after the greatest crossover fandom play of my lifetime (Brandon Graham's strip sack of Brady, closing the tuck rule time loop with Charles Woodson), I assumed there was a karmic deficit to be paid on my end so that is my highly sophisticated expectation.

I do think it will be a good game, especially for the Space Coyote types who love great strategy and execution.

The Chefs by a million

Might watch, but will be at Universal Studios Orlando this weekend, and it’s not a priority.  I looked at getting into the NBC Grille around game time, but apparently everyone else in Orlando had similar thoughts.

I'm going to be a contrarian and take KC.  I can't bet against "Mahohes"/Kelce with Andy Reid and take Hurts with the inexperienced coach instead.  Gimme KC and the points.

The weather here in AZ is very nice.  A little unseasonably cool, but not a cloud in the sky today, or most any day for that matter.

You didn't ask as usual, but I'll have some "amber juice" in my cup (not "red pop").

Yeah, I was inspired by another user who had a street sign.  And I noticed many others who had changed theirs.  So call me a copycat.  The old avatar ("General Specific") ran his course for 8.5 yrs.  Time for a new one.  US25 is a now defunct road designation that went nearby my childhood house, so why not?

Honestly? No idea. I think it comes down to which QB can overcome their nagging injury more effectively. My inclination is to pick the Eagles since I think their D and overall team is better, but KC's defense isn't bad and Mahomes/Reid (and their superbowl experience compared to Philly) adds a little extra X-factor to everything.

I found a very interesting prop bet to make on superbowl

Will the opening kickoff be returned or touchback?

58% of kicks in the regular season are touchback

18 of the last 20 opening superbowl kicks have been returned, because the ball is brand new, & not conditioned, & removed from play immediately to be put in the hall of fame. NFL kicker says new ball is like plastic & hard as hell

Opening kick returned pays +120

I'm rootin' for Philly because my cousin's a huge fan and he just had a double bypass; please let's avoid any late-game craziness. I think it's cool that we'll have two Black QBs at the helm.

Rooting for Chad Henne to lead the Chiefs to victory

Expecting Philly to win

May watch a little bit, but no party

Been an exceptionally cloudy winter.

Which is entirely normal here in A2. Winter sucks in SE Michigan.

I like Philly to win but I personally wouldn't be more than a few bucks on this game; I'm not sure either QB will be 100% and I suspect that's going to make a difference. I'm just not sure for who.

I am going to watch it while I do something else in my usual half-assed way. My office/man cave needs cleaning. I'm not actually sure who I'm rooting for yet, though.

I got the Eagles at +1.5 the night of the conference championship games.
Felt smart when they were favorites by the time I woke up.

So, of course, KC is going to win by like 3.

Hopefully Kansas City, since I'll be drinking Boulevard on game day.

I always watch, but alone. Nobody else in the family really cares for football. It'll probably just be me and the grey cat. She's the only one of our three that really likes to snuggle.

High ankle sprains don't get healed in three weeks and are easily reaggravated.

I feel this line is off by a good 4-5 points and I like the Eagles to win relatively comfortably.

1.  The in-laws are from KC so I will be root for the Chiefs and they are going to win.

2.  I am watching.  Before COVID we used to watch with a bunch of friends but I think this year it will be a date with my wife.

It was sunny today but with blustery winds.

Hope it's the Eagles.  I like Mahomes but I'd like to see the Eagles D get all over him.

Based on what I've seen the Eagles' D could make for a long D for Patrick assuming the Eagles' secondary can cover.

I think the Eagles have an edge in this matchup. Unless Mahomes has a stellar day on a bad ankle, the ball control - run game and defense should have the edge.

I wish Mahomes was healthier; though I don't really care who wins, I'd like to see a competitive game. I guess his effectiveness will be decided by Philly's very good defense.

Heading to corporate HQ next week in Philly.  If they win, roads will be blocked in downtown.  If they lose… the same.  Might be sleeping at the airport until Tuesday and then catch a flight home!

No real dog in the fight, feels like the Eagles will pull it out, especially with their pass D.

We always host my wife's fam for the SB. Sliders, homemade chicken tenders, taco dip, will be fun, for sure! Plenty of booze, too lol.

I just want a close game. Eagles are NFC champions but I live close to KC, so I have a slight rooting interest in the Chiefs. But I'm a big Lions fan, since I grew up in southern Michigan.

I was leaning Philly until the conference championship games.  I really thought Burrow and company would be enough to beat KC with Mahomes on a hobbled leg.  But alas, Mahomes rose above the injury and willed his team to victory.  I think two weeks may be enough for Mahomes to be near 100%.  Total feelingsball here but it seems to me like KC might be the team of destiny.

KC moneyline will be my pick until I change my mind at the last minute.  Maybe I'll do a 6.5 point tease with the over/under?  I don't know.  These are two of the best teams in the NFL this season.  It should be a great game.
