Phil Martelli Interview on Philadelphia Sports Talk Radio About Michigan Job

Submitted by house of pain on June 5th, 2019 at 7:47 PM

Phil Martelli joined 97.5 in Philadelphia today. As a resident of Philly, this was a must listen as we received insight on his relationship with Juwan and what motivated him to take the job on Juwan Howard's staff. It was a great interview. Here is the link to the interview. Enjoy

https://975thefanatic.com/episodes/phil-martelli-joins-the-mike-missanelli-show-6-5-2019/

Some highlights:

-Had opportunities with NBA, NCAA, Overseas ball, but the call from Juwan was different and felt Juwan's character was a selling point.

-The press conference was very big deal (positively). The press conference will allow him to get to elite prospects across the country. PM feels Juwan's humbleness and willingness to learn sets him apart.

-PM takes on his role as a teacher and believes at Michigan with Juwan he is in the best position possible.

-No nonsense. PM knows Juwan does not and will not compromise the values of the university and the bball program to obtain high-level recruits

-Is excited about ND Michigan

Thanks for posting this. We can't know how things will work out, but both Howard and Martelli seem to be heading into this with great attitudes.

I have much less insight than Martelli, but I also thought Howard did very well at the press conference in a way that would resonate with recruits. He seemed genuine.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but JH's press conference did not leave me feeling all that confident.  It sounded more like a speech someone makes after winning an award they've always wanted to win than someone with a blueprint for how to run a program.

That said, I don't think a presser really gives any insight into how well a coach is likely to do, so who knows.  It just didn't sound like a guy who knew exactly how he was going to run a program.

Not gonna lie, I felt a little of this also. Like a guy who’s so happy to have gotten the job but doesn’t really know how to proceed. Obviously he does and has help but the tone was like the hard work has been finished, instead of just starting. Love the hire though. Really do. Just an opinion on the presser.

I initially had some reservations re: the lack of specificity in the press conference.  But the more I thought about it, an introductory press conference isn't the time to discuss strategy, playing style, etc.  And, the reality, is that this is Howard's first time acting as head coach...and holding this type of press conference.  My sense was that he was overwhelmed and nervous...which probably contributed to the lack of specifics.

And let's all remember that Hoke's introductory press conference was lauded as being a great one.

Which’s is why he’s already gone out and offered a few guys, including a Top 10 guy.

What he sounded like to me was a very excited and humbled man coming back to his university. Did you want coach speak or a specific offensive set he plans to run? Is he supposed to explain exactly how he wants to play so everyone can game-plan UM’s style under him?

Despite the fact that JH has had a front row seat within a well run, championship organization - led  by some of the best minds in basketball - for the better part of what, 8 years?  It's no guarantee but I have confidence that experience along with what seems like broad consensus about JH's character and work ethic from the Heat brass, NBA players & coaches, etc., will help JH continue JB's foundation of running a strong program we can all be proud of.

Stellar post and should be used as an example.  Did not title post "Phil Martelli" and made a proper link with highlights. I salute you.

Nice find, OP. Thanks for posting.

This boosts my confidence in the Howard hire. It's a huge coup for Juwan to land a 25-year head coaching veteran with major recruiting chops as his top assistant. And the fact that Martelli has no prior relationship with Juwan but speaks highly of him after having done his diligence counts for a lot. So far so good, Juwan.

I did cringe a bit when Martelli said that he stopped rooting for Penn State when they "told Joe he had to go."

EDIT - There's one caveat that I just thought of. I'd like to know what kind of deal Martelli is getting from Michigan. If Howard's relatively modest salary allowed him to offer Martelli a $1 million a year contract or something, then this is essentially a no-lose proposition for him and everything he said about believing in Juwan should be taken with a grain of salt. It would still be a solid hire, but I wouldn't put as much stock in Martell vouching for Juwan if that is indeed the case.

Is Howard Eisley hiring as the last assistant official? I haven’t heard much on this. I thought Howard would tweet out his final staff decisions, sort of like he did with Sanderson early in the process.

Howard needed a very experienced former head coach on staff to help him understand how to structure a college program. Being that Howard hasn't been too acquainted with college basketball for the past 25 years, someone to show him all the ropes, guide him past the landmines, and basically introduce him to the nuances of the college game was, at bare minimum, a necessity. Martelli can be a good mentor. He's old enough to know that another head coaching gig is unlikely, so there should be no undercutting the head coach.

I think Martelli might be more important than Juwan in the first year of the program! I think a lot of our offense will be based off of his expertise. I've heard that there's a lot of one on one work with Martelli, and honestly, I don't mind. One on one stuff is what opens up the rest of the game on a micro level.

Really like this hire. I think both Howard and Martelli will be great representatives of the university.

Adding the experience of Martelli makes me feel a bit better about all this, quite honestly. Like others, the presser left me underwhelmed and even a bit nervous due to the lack of specifics in many answers, but then I suppose if Howard has this level of experience around him - from Martelli and others - then maybe it balances out somewhat. We can't really know until we see it on the court ultimately.

The conversation is mostly fluff, but it was interesting and worth the listen to hear Martelli's voice and get some sense of his personality.
