No other realistic option has an easier road, since the Raiders are out of it, but that just means that there no other plausible Super Bowl bound teams that need a coach (shocking).  Minnesota might be the best option from a bunch of bad options, but the fact that he’s still looking at the bad options tells me it’s not just about winning.

“He’s not afraid of a rebuild”— ok, but then why would he be afraid of trying to keep winning at Michigan.  Because even with NIL and the transfer rules and all the “impossible” obstacles, he was one game from the title game.  He was a few plays from beating MSU, getting to play Cincy, and making the title game.

So if he’s all about winning, why would he think rebuilding the Vikings is easier than sustaining the momentum at Michigan?  This narrative that he just wants to win but nobody will let him is silly.  If he wasn’t the coach at Michigan, no one this board would buy this narrative for a second.  If Pete Carol came back to USC and left for the NFL immediately after his first a big time successful season back, nobody on this board would think anything other the truth:  he wanted a good NFL gig with a fat contract and he left as soon as he got the opportunity.

Nobody would mind if Mich were "stacking big 10 championships" but one is not a stack. And this year they almost lost to Neb and Rutgers, and did lose to Sparty--again. And needed Sparty to shit the bed against Purdue to even get to the Championship game. Then they got trucked by Georgia. It's time to stop pretending this was a "dominant season." It was a good season, and Mich has paid JH 10s of millions of dollars expecting more than one good season.

Sigh…..Harbaugh has the right to explore his options and do what’s best for him, but at this point let’s just rip the goddamn band-aid off.

I don’t care if he leaves or stays. I really don’t. Michigan can survive without him and likely find someone who can replicate winning ~10 games/year and beating OSU one out of every five tries.

But if you want to leave, just freaking leave and let Michigan move on. You can’t tell me this isn’t affecting recruiting at this point.

This. The thing that really, really bottles the mind is how myopic it is on his behalf to let this drag on if he intends to stay at Michigan. I have a difficult time thinking whatever leverage he may gain in nil control, or assistant salary, or whatever will be significant enough to offset the capital he is burning through that accrued during this past season.  You want to win big at Michigan? Maybe try to carry some momentum from making the CFP and finally beating tosu. It was mentioned earlier, but after all this nfl flirtation, he’s gotta followup with beating tosu and can’t go oh-and-Tucker against msu. If he’s all in for Michigan, I feel like people would have his back. If he continues to let this drag on, people are gonna be a whole lot less supportive.  He’s free to do whatever he wants, but anyone who thinks those decisions are void of consequences is being obtuse.

Yep, every recruit he tells he's staying are now reading these reports and will probably decommit. So why the fuck is he out recruiting? I'm thinking the AD needs to set a Feb 1 deadline. Spring practice is just around the corner and we cannot have a coach who is now spending his time looking for an NFL job.

Its a legit interview, unlike all the other talk of one in earlier reports.

Not sure if mentioned earlier, but Harbaugh is required to let the AD know if an interview has been requested.

At the end of the day, no one knows what Harbaugh will do, but I doubt a guy that gave away all of his bonuses, which would have allowed him to get more or less the same salary before 2020, has anything to do with it.

I guess we'll find out. But no one is above the team.

A lot of unknowns here but if Harbaugh is willing to seriously consider the Vikings then my assumption is he would take any NFL job if offered. So the only question is, will an NFL team hire him.

A couple weeks ago I thought Harbaugh was going to stay when the Raiders moved on. However, it seems like Harbaugh is trying to get any NFL job, so I guess I'm thinking Harbaugh will be leaving and may not end up with the best NFL situation. I could see him taking the Jags job. He may do better than Urban but he may not do good enough to make it 3 years. I sure the hell hope our AD is doing a new coaching search behind the scenes but I doubt that. I thing they will go with the lazy plan B which would be to promote Gattis as our new HC. I hope that goes well?

Warde in a few years:  “remember that time I let our head football coach flirt with NFL teams thinking it was harmless and then he looked for every opportunity he could find and then went and got hired and I looked like an ass, that was fun.”

Let's say the team hadn't broken through with one of their best games in a long, long time and thrashed Ohio State. Would Harbaugh still be employed here?

Coaching is a fickle business. I'd like to think that since he grew up here, played Junior Wolverines, went to Michigan, starred here, came back after reaching the Super Bowl... this is what he wants to do for life. But he was fairly close to losing his job here. So it's understandable that he might want to move on.

Still, I think there's a big part of him that does not want to move on - especially if he gets a contract that reflects the position. We'll see how strong that part is as long as the contract extension is competitive.

No matter what happened last season, Harbuagh would stay as long as he wants to at Michigan. If the University was serious about winning, they would have fired Harbaugh after the 2020 season, not just for only getting 2 wins but for not beating OSU and being under .500 to MSU. I don't mind Harbaugh staying but if wants to leave, he should just resign and try to get in the NFL as a coach or assistant coach.

Most people probably don’t have low to mid eight figures in the bank. I’m not saying he should do this, but the comparisons to this being a normal job search aren’t really apt. Gruden didn’t have a hard time getting a job after sitting on the sidelines after a decade. Urban had two stints on tv. I’m sure Dungy could get a gig.

I think that anything above .500 and he would have remained the coach from the Admin's point of view...

He has a job at Michigan for life, short of any massive OSU blowout, or some event off the field that embarrassed the University.

I think the only reason Harbaugh isn't the coach at Michigan 10 years from now is because he decided to move on, not the other way around.

What were the details of the renegotiation prior to this season? It was unusual and Harbaugh agreed to it, then gave the converted bonus money to fellow employees.

How do you avoid a massive blowout against OSU once they get rolling? They have the deepest group of receivers I've ever seen in college and a very good quarterback. They recruit great players, year after year. What Michigan did in that game was remarkable, and can't be expected every season.

I'd agree that he has bought himself some time, but if he were 0-6 against OSU instead of 1-5 right now, I think he'd be doing more than interviewing with the Vikings.

I doubt this interview goes public unless he is getting the job. As they say, he gone.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

1-5(6) vs OSU. Yes, Michigan can do better.

F*ck this guy. To do this now. I will openly root for him to fall on his face.

Neg away.

Jim (reasonably, in my opinion), felt under appreciated by the administration and a large segment of the fan base, though I keep reminding myself that this blog's posters do not represent, a close approximation of the entire fanbase.

Criticism was fair, but again, just IMO, out of proportion to his record prior to 2021, especially in context of the two coaches that preceded him and the OSU dominant environment in the conference. 2021 was his vindication and by any reasonable measure, a spectacular season that was fun as well as successful.

The money is what it is, if MSU and LSU are "overpaying", markets have always been set by the most recent contracts. You can say as a coach, then the money doesn't matter and still understand that the money is a measure of the respect shown you.

For those who say the University can't afford it, wait and see if we make an unsuccessful change at the coaching position, what the costs will be from shrinking attendance and declining fan interest.

Harbaugh saved the program when it was about to crater after RR and Hoke, and reversed ticket sale trends contrary to the nation wide trends that were still in decline at the time and remain in decline.

My pure guess is that Warde would like to move on, but wants public sentiment to support it. I also predict that Gattis will be the next head coach. I share concerns of those who wonder if a guy whom most on here thought was a failure, prior to 2021, will work out. I hope so and I will be pulling for him or whomever, 100 percent. I would also suggest that attracting a top coach with a more solid track record and head coaching experience would be far more difficult than many assume.

Why would it ie be difficult? UM is a top job.

In the short term Michigan will probably give Gattis the job as an interim because of how late it is. Long term I think they will look for name. Michigan has too much invested to risk losing fan interest with bad seasons. They can’t afford to lose. Not after losing $80 million last year.

Maybe there was something to the whole "he's never coached anywhere for longer than five years" or whatever prior to getting to Michigan.  Like once he has success, he feels that people don't appreciate it enough and he takes off to the next place to resume the cycle.  If that's the case, and it's pure speculative psychology, then he's out of his fucking mind if he thinks NFL fans and management are more loyal and appreciative of coaches than what he's got at his alma mater.

If he wants to go I wish him all the luck in the world, and I'll be rooting for him wherever he lands. It really seems like he wants to go.

If he doesn't want to go and this is mostly a negotiating tactic, offer him all the money already.
