Too conservative for my tastes, but love the outcome!
November 11th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
The game was going to be a win as long as we didn't turn the ball over. The game plan was fine.
November 11th, 2023 at 9:43 PM ^
Especially when your right tackle is imitating a turnstile.
November 12th, 2023 at 1:32 AM ^
Wouldn't have been as close with a similar strategy and just a little more play action or early down passing mixed in. As Drew Allar can attest to you can turn the ball over by fumbling too. If you don't trust JJ now, then when?
November 12th, 2023 at 10:02 AM ^
I don't think it's that they didn't trust JJ. I think they didn't trust their pass protection, which is not good should they make the playoffs and possibly against OSU.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:32 PM ^
Style points don't matter. The goal was to win and they did.
In spite of every sort of distractions that could have derailed them, they won... and kicked ass in the process..
November 11th, 2023 at 4:04 PM ^
I liked it just fine. The whole point is to win.
November 11th, 2023 at 6:57 PM ^
At this point in the season, a win is a win is a win.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:34 PM ^
I think that Klatt had it very, very right. And think of all the fun plays we have saved for OSU.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:38 PM ^
It was, but they got the job done in a hostile environment with everything else going on. If you would have told me they would win the game not throwing the ball at all in the 2nd half i wouldnt have believed it.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:47 PM ^
After watching Barnhart on 1st 2 drives this was right cal if you weren't going to replace him.
What is going on b in practice? Trente Jones and Hinton are both better athletes. At least need to get in the way of pass rusher and don't give them a direct path to McCarthy.
November 11th, 2023 at 5:37 PM ^
PSU DEs are better than OSUs. They are true athletes. Despite what the media would have you believe. Sawyer and JTT are just regular ass guys. Larry Johnson has lost his fastball.
November 11th, 2023 at 10:06 PM ^
JTT is an absolute terror, there's a reason he was a five star....It'll be a problem, but the UM coaching staff is fantastic and will have multiple plans just like they did today
November 12th, 2023 at 1:05 AM ^
Chop Robinson is better and more consistent than JTT but the latter is still good. Barnhart is concerning. Hall and Williams are also very good in the OSU interior.
November 11th, 2023 at 6:13 PM ^
That was tough to watch early.
November 11th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
Tackles couldn't handle the pass rush on a consistent basis, and Michigan knew Allar wasn't going to be able to beat them. Sitting on the ball took away their biggest strength and shortened the game.
November 11th, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
We could have put the game away earlier if we used play action passes, especially after we broke a couple of those bigger runs.
Pretty stupid getting JJ hurt on a 2nd and 17 run. That took the JJ possible run off the table and made it a slugfest.
So someone takes his helmet off (Barrett or Colson) after it looked like we got the game ending pick and they give us a 15-yard penalty. What is the point of that penalty rule? Taunting?
I'm worried about our tackles in pass protection. No championship with that deficiency!
November 12th, 2023 at 1:15 AM ^
You just weren't allowed to take a helmet off on the field, just the way it is, yes probably to prevent taunting and fights without protection, many reasons.
QB designed runs could have been put away completely in the 2nd half and just been an option if the play broke down...like a bootleg/play action to the TE.
Anyway, I'm so happy to just relax. Big win.
November 11th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
It wasn't being conservative, that was a embarrassing loss by Penn St. We didn't even try this game. 8 Passes against a top 5 defense. And we still score 24 points. No complaints here, I'll take the win. BET
November 11th, 2023 at 7:12 PM ^
Plus Michigan didn't put much on tape for OSU
November 12th, 2023 at 4:44 AM ^
But how can there be any tape? Isn't that advanced scouiting? Isn't that against the rules? Won't that result in a three-game suspension and an "oh, the shame of it!" letter from a TV executive ... sorry, I mean, from the B1G commissioner?
(And while I don't think the /s is necessary, you never know.)
November 11th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
The OSU game is officially for the Big 10 East now (unless OSU blows it against MSU tonight).
November 11th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
A win is a fricken win, especially today. Go fricken blue!
November 11th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
Bo is smiling in football's Valhalla
November 11th, 2023 at 4:05 PM ^
JJ ran very well, but didn’t have the carries the Rick Leach had under Bo!
November 11th, 2023 at 7:22 PM ^
But he completed a lot more passes even on just 8 official attempts than Leach did in the '76 OSU game, a 22-0 shutout of the Buckeyes in Columbus with zero pass completions!
November 11th, 2023 at 4:31 PM ^
the big house?
November 11th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
Yeah, that game plan was straight out of 1973.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
In proving irreparable harm this Friday, the play calling of the 2nd half should be Exhibit A. Technically not a single pass.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
The offense ran a pass play, and picked up 15 yds and a 1st down. It doesn't count as a pass attempt and incompletion in the stat book, but it's wrong for people to say we didn't call a pass play in the second half.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:47 PM ^
Passing is for teams who can’t win with all runs.
November 11th, 2023 at 4:32 PM ^
he said technically
November 11th, 2023 at 10:22 PM ^
We also had the JJ rollout where he scrambled and ran for I believe a first down.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
I don’t mind power running. In fact, I like it. What I don’t like is we aren’t getting the consistent 3-6 yards between the tackles like we used to with Corum, and Edward’s seems to go down really easily. I’ll be counterintuitive and say we really need a more consistent running game vs OSU.
November 11th, 2023 at 4:38 PM ^
Could it be they are setting them up to have a bust out? Seems to happen over and over.
November 11th, 2023 at 4:42 PM ^
Yeah it seems like every run is either stoned for <2 or an explosive. No in between.
November 11th, 2023 at 5:26 PM ^
and I'm 100% ok with that.
I just don't want those explosive plays to be 1 out of 20!
November 11th, 2023 at 6:37 PM ^
No complaining today, we won without the Head Coach against a Top Ten team with 11 hrs of notice. BET
November 11th, 2023 at 5:34 PM ^
The weird thing was that virtually every 1st down run was a total waste. If they'd been a little more creative on 1st down, it would have helped a lot.
November 12th, 2023 at 4:59 AM ^
I understand the reasoning of all the running plays: it negates PSU's pash rush, it shortens the game, it chews up the clock, style points don't matter, and so forth. I agree with all that.
What I couldn't figure out is why they didn't use that jumbo package that they used a couple of times in the first half. Skill players replaced by three 300-pound linemen, drooling over the chance to drive the speedy linebackers into the turf. It would be basically telling PSU "OK, you little mothers. You think you can stop our run game? Then stop this."
Not every down, of course, but if you're going to run the ball 30 times straight anyway, you'd think they have used it at least a couple of times. But unless I missed it, they didn't use it once in the second half.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
Well that was a rock fight.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
Michigan had real rocks. Penn State had foam ones.
November 11th, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
focks
November 11th, 2023 at 10:11 PM ^
Their D had real rocks too and came to play, but Allar doesn't have UM's coaching staff developing him and was throwing foam
November 11th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
Got a “fuckin” on live tv. Hell yea. A propos at Penn State.
November 11th, 2023 at 3:35 PM ^
I heard 2 “fuckin”s and a “shit” in the Sherrone interview. I love the passion from Sherrone. He will be a great head coach within the next few years. He loves this team and that love is reciprocated.
This post (amongst others) will affect the stats that LSA will post next week about the state of open threads. Lots of swear words, but a lot of them were expressed in a positive way
November 11th, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
Is there a Big Ten rule against saying fuck and shit on tv? I only wish he’d said Fuck u Pettite as well. I’m sure they’re looking over the sportsmanship handbook as we speak
November 11th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
Honestly, isn't that what the sportsmanship policy has been used for in the past?
November 11th, 2023 at 6:56 PM ^
No. Obscene insults hurled at opponents is unsportsmanlike. Obscene compliments to one's own team is considered a bit gauche if done in public, but it is not unsportsmanlike. If it was, every football player in the history of ever would have been suspended for life.
That's not to say Tipetti won't flex his tyrant muscle and try to take someone down for obscene compliments, but that's not happened in the past, AFAICT.
