Outrage Du Jour: SEC Country Having Conniptions Over David Shaw's Comments on Satellite Camps

Submitted by VicTorious1 on

Stanford's coach, David Shaw, made a comment about satellite camps and how Stanford didn't have any plans to start doing them due to their eligibility standards. I'm not sure if he was taking a dig at the SEC, making a joke or not specifically talking about the SEC, but folks in SEC country are not happy.  Below are his comments:

"I have no opinion. [Satellite camps have] never affected us. People do them, and people don't do them. We've got great attendance at the camps we have here -- we get a lot of guys we want to come....But I didn't like the way that a lot of people have put this as the SEC against Jim Harbaugh. That's not what this has been about. Conference by conference, this has been going on for three plus years, since Jim was with the 49ers. This has been a battle. As a conference, we had a long discussion three years ago about what we were going to do about satellite camps....I'm great with whatever college football says, because it doesn't affect us. It doesn't make sense for us to go hold a camp some place where there might be one person in the entire state that's eligible to get into Stanford."  http://www.ruleoftree.com/2016/4/10/11400862/stanford-cardinal-football-2016-spring-game-roundup-david-shaw-quarterback-competition-burns-chryst

It's being reported that Coach Shaw took a shot at the intelligence of SEC country despite having approximately 20 players on his roster from states that have an SEC school.   From the context, it doesn't seem to me that he was denigrating the South, but Finebaum and the rest of Southern talk radio have picked it up and run with it.

but Shaw's broad-brush swipe at the intellectual/academic capabilities of the south is odd since he's got as many kids on his roster from SEC territory as he does.

I guess he likes to shit where he eats. Or at least snacks.

And Harbaugh still hasn't said a word about the decision. He's home eating popcorn and watching every coach offend each other over this......bahahahahahaha

This is much more a dig at certain educational systems in certain states. Not siding with the SEC at all, but it was a bit of an elitist comment at the end, don't you think?

SEC overreaction. Shaw was not targeting SEC country but holy crackers everyone is do damned sensitive about everything these days. When even southerners are crying out for a "safe space" you know the whole country has truly gone to hell.

It's funny to me that every coach that comes out in favor of the ban completely undermines the NCAA's supposed position by making it clear that they didn't spend one second thinking about it's effect on the 'student athlete'.

But I'm betting these are a lot of the people who say political correctness is for wussies.

Kinda like when people freaked out over the ESPN host's "Caucasians" shirt as a mockery of the Cleveland Indians.

Come on. David Shaw is not an idiot. Nor is he elitist.  He just has an acute understanding of the limits and boundaries within which he has to do his job and perform.  His answer is essential "IDGAF" because "it doesn't apply to my situation and my challenges". That's not elitism.

It's also cost-benefit analysis 101.  I don't care if you're Stanford or Northern Iowa, etc. holding a college football camp down in Florida or Georgia damn well better reap significant rewards in order offset the costs first and not create other avoidable hassles.  Stanford does philantrophy. They don't need to be seen doing it here to win SEC approval.

Apparently academic eligibility is a big issue for Stanford athletics, and their football program  hasprobably been burnt to a crisp enough times in the 11th hour for the coaching staff to decide to use their time, effort and resources differently.  That's not a crime, just reality.

I have no idea as to whether Shaw intended to insult the South or the SEC in regards to their educational "standards". What I can say is that his words are asshole-ish. He's saying he doesn't care to have an impact on kids that can't be admitted to Stanford and that he doesn't care about the benefits of satellite camps since they barely affect him, i.e., fuck all the kids who could benefit. He's a POS.

Althyough I wish  these coaches would sense some type of obligation toward promoting that which has given them a tremendous life style, most of whom would have never dreamed possible if not for their current hiring. I don't expect everyone to go at a Harbaugh like pace. Justt give back somewhat. As someone said, Freeze wants the free time to spend with family, but  when he's done poking the old lady will txt recruits unti 3 a.m. And although I believe he would have voted wth the conference because that is how they stay strong. Anyone can see the good it it, and Dantunniiiinio does not have to twat something than retract it. You'r too cool for that. gotcha and Freeze is now upset  because he  didn't realize if woult affect  the mid-majors in this area. I call b.s.

but wish they were all willing to  give back a little to the sport that has been so damn good to them and Emmert will keep making it better because he believes his job is to  cater to the welfare of the  millionaire class, himself being one of them instead of what he gets paid 1.6 million to do, look at the sutdenet athlete and their welfare.

I love it.  His quote was:  "there might be one person in the entire state that's eligible to get into Stanford."

The SEC immediately assumed it was about them.

Well, I guess they know themselves better than anyone.

The public school system in parts of Cali aren't that great either.  I could tell you stories of teachers sleeping with multiple students, porn being played in biology class, "field trips" for going surfing.
