OT: Worst Pro Sports City in America (?)
With the Cavaliers bringing home the first title to Cleveland, Ohio since the Declaration of Independence the Civil War Prohibition WWII John Williams composed anything worthwhile Lyndon Johnson was President, it seems reasonable to discuss what the worst sports city is in America. While the Lions are major suckage, at least there are three other teams in Detroit that have won titles in (most of) our lifetimes.
In my opinion it is still Cleveland, but who else should be up for consideration?
Cleveland is one of four cities I have lived in and my current favorite. If you don't enjoy or give a chance to downtown, the Indians, Ohio City, Tremont, the Metroparks, and everything else going on, you may need to hire a fun coach.
I exaggerated when i said terrible. Its not terrible, its just not some place I see myself living for much longer. The metro parks are amazing and so is the art museum. Ohio City is a nice too. I live downtown so I have given it plenty of chances and honestly I just don't like it. Plus it is pretty inconvenient to get around. However, the public square project is coming along nicely and will give some much needed useful greenspace downtown. I appreciate the suggestion on a fun coach but I think I am good. I get out and try a bunch of things, it just is not for me.
Yea Detroit is the nastiest city I've seen in The United States. St Louis is probably 2nd but Detroit is head and shoulders the worst $%^ hole I've ever seen.
Detroit has its own issues obviously, but I always think people who say this are either being harsh for the sake of it or they spent time hanging out at Mack and Gratiot rather than experiencing what is actually a pretty diverse urban culture in a downtown that is quite the improvement over even just a few years ago.
Also, we're a pretty awesome sports town, if I do say so, with three franchises that have experienced relatively recent success and rather cool histories to boot. I don't know what to tell anyone about the Lions on the other hand - a lot of us still care deeply. We wouldn't bitch about them endlessly if we didn't.
You have never been to Flint then.
I haven't been to Flint no but, i'll never forget Detroit. Dirty beyond dirty, fires, abandoned buildings, just a nasty place. At one point half the population of Detroit couldn't pay their water bill. The city went bankrupt, Had one of, if not the worst emergency response times ( an hour), huge potholes, grafitti every where, horrible crime rate, leads every poll for worst city ever. I can't think of one good thing about the place with in the last 30-40 years. Cleveland and Chicago are dumps but Detroit is third world country bad.
Then you haven't been to a third world country.
I live about 40 miles from Mexico and Detroit is every bit as nasty as a border town in Mexico. I just dont think YOU know what a third world country is
Well, Detroit is technically a border town, I'll give you that. Beyond that, you're sounding like a person who likes to denigrate vibrant places from afar without a good grasp on reality.
You obviously have sort of attachment to the city. That doesn't change the fact that the city has 40% of it's citizens living below the poverty line, one of the lowest annual income average in the country, an incredibly high illiteracy rate (39%), one third of the city is vacant or derelict, it has worst average emergency response time in the country (58 minutes), the united nations almost had to step in because the city was shutting off peoples water for lack of payment... almost half the city couldn't pay their water bill. It has higher crime rates than cities like New York city, the city filed for bankrupty .. so yea tell me how vibrant the place is lol
Detroit has serious problems and you can refer to statistics, but unless you have spent time in the city and/or keep in touch with its people, your statement comes off as ungrounded and classist. LSAClassOf2000's earlier comment is much closer to the reality.
Oh Please. I get you're digging in on the point you're making, but wake me up when rickety, and flimsy wooden shanties make up the majority of people's housing. Or do you only go to the touristy areas?
Lost in this shuffle is the fact that this person called Chicago a "dump". Which...wha?
Something tells me your favorite city is a mall, Twelve Oaks or Somerset perhaps? When you travel beyond the stretch between the highway off ramp and a Ford Field parking lot, you would find that Detroit is a fun place with a lot of creative energy.
San Diego is a fine city, Cincinnati, Denver are also nice cities. It has been a long time since I have been to Detroit and I'm sure there are some nice things about the city and I could throw out internet "facts" about how crappy the city is but, I'm just going off my personal experience and that is simply it's the worst city I ever stepped foot in and a vast majority of the people of the world would agree.
The vast majority of people in the world live in places like Jakarta and Lagos. I'm guessing you've never been to Jakarta. You probably haven't set foot in very many cities. For that matter I don't think you bothered with Detroit any more than you needed to in order to confirm a preconceived notion. I promise you Jakarta makes Detroit look like Malibu.
I'm sure there are a lot of cities worse than Detroit around the world, Detroit is just the worst in the United states. I find it funny now that we've went from, Detroits not that bad to hey, atleast we're not Jakarta. Nothing said by anyone trying to defend Detroit changes any of the facts that it lists dead last or almost last in EVERY single category when you rank US. cities. I'm sorry you have to live there.
You assume I haven't traveled to many cities because I don't like Detroit, I'll assume you haven't been much anywhere of note because you like it there
You assume incorrectly.
I also never said "at least we're not Jakarta." I simply refuted your "vast majority of people in the world" statement, which I notice you've walked back pretty quickly and quietly.
You just offended people on multiple levels, that's why the discussion is all over the place. I could explain why Detroit's a great place, but it's like I said earlier. You seem to want to live in a a snaitized bubble, like a shopping mall. Which, fine, but don't insult what you don't understand.
I call it like I see it, if you get offended by opinions, truth and facts then that is your problem not mine. Detroit USED to be a great city but, that was 40-50 years ago. There is an unmeasurable ammount of difference between Detroit and a sanitized bubble
Just so you know, you sound both ignorant and prejudiced to informed people when you say things like "the worst $%^ hole". Worse than that, you are perpetuating a harmful misconception (based on cherry-picked or out-of-date info) of an entire group of people when you pop off and then double down with these remarks.

I can keep listing things like this from a hundred different sources. I been to Detroit, I've seen how nasty it is/was oh informed one. I get that it's obviously your home but, it doesn't change the fact that perception and reality of most people outside ( and probably more than a few inside it) think Detroit is the metropolitan version of a toilet bowl.
Lt's just agree to disagree, you're not changing my mind and I'm not changing yours
These sources you provided are clickbait that use a poor choice of statistics to appeal to people's preconceptions of American urban centers. Really misinformed stuff. If this is how you guide your opinions, I would recommend changing your reading habits. Also, I do not live in Detroit, I just think what you say is ignorant and harmful.
you're hopeless and i'm done talking to you..... did you not read where ive said multiple times that I have been to Detroit during our conversation?
You said "It has been a long time since I have been to Detroit", and everyone else told you things have drastically changed, roughly the past ten years.
Fun fact: the Cavs winning the NBA finals brought Cleveland its first professional sports title since the Lake Erie River Monsters won the Calder Cup on June 11, 2016.
So, still just one title in 54 years.

I like reddit, too.
Philly is a close 3rd
I actually kinda expected this one to end up being the consensus, although my pro sports trivia knowledge isn't the greatest so I didn't want to be presumptive.
Plus Philly sucks. Everybody in the Northeast avoids that rathole like the plague.
...and wrong
That's because you get to count your better half *wink face emoji*
As a Philly fan, I would say that in most categories they aren't "worst"
I have found the fans are passionate and in a lot of cases knowledgeable.
They can be quite rude but I would argue NYC fans (and Boston at times) are just as obnoxious without the reputation. For those that want to disagree with me, I will take you more seriously if you have been to 10+ games in each of those cities (which I have) and come to the same conclusion.
In terms of success, 3 of the 4 have won championships in my lifetime, albeit a while back save the Phillies. The Eagles, while having no SB rings, have been among the most successful franchises in the NFL over the past 20 years.
New Yorker fans boo opposing teams. Philly fans boo their own teams.
Anyway, here's a young Philadephian enjoying a Phillies game. Bottoms up!
New Yorkers boo their own as much as anyone, especially entitled Yankee fans. Boston fans went from stupid with an inferiority complex to stupid with a superiority complex. Philly fans are mean enough to think that they get their fans upon graduation from Columbus.

Having lived in Buffalo for a few years, I'd say it's a mixed bag. I mean yeah, the Sabres and Bills suck. However, the city really, really gets behind the Sabres. It's cool, actually. It's like everyone is in the same college or high school and rah-rah Sabres all the time. Bills to a lesser extent.
Of course, that kind of makes it worse when they eventually lose. And topping it all off is Buffalo's inferiority complex, which is annoying af. Got so sick of people with Niagara Falls, two Great Lakes, skiing, American history, no traffic, museums, schools, university, etc. moping around about how their city is terrible. Have some goddam pride already.
Don't know if you're still in Buffalo, but it has turned the corner and is a pretty sweet city. You can acatually afford to go to pro football and hockey games and there is tons of stuff to do. That and it is 5 hours from Ann Arbor! Plus Ward Manuel was the AD at UB for a few years.
I've heard that it's had a renaissance. That's great. Honestly, I enjoyed the city. Loved the school I was teaching at, loved all the stuff I mentioned above, great place for kids, very friendly and good people. I thought it was a super place. Only thing that was annoying was all the people there who thought it was terrible, except for Wegman's and Tim Horton's, which are pretty much God in Buffalo.
EDIT: Also annoying: the people who think Chef's is a great restaurant. Never understood that.
The Sun Belt is growing, but there's no charactor in those places. It's strip malls and new construction and subdivision with dumb names like 'Winding Cotton Creek'. Cities in the Rust Belt are beautiful with their brick buildings, dense downtowns, proximity to water (necessary to move goods 100 years ago). I'd gladly take a weekend in upstate NY, PA, OH, MI, WI over Spartanberg, SC any day.
You forgot the 10 feet of snow Buffalo gets in the winter. Heck you make the folks in Marquette jealous.
Last I knew, Marquette gets, on average, about 50% more yearly snow than Buffalo (140-some inches versus 90-some for Buffalo).
I admire your attitude. Moving to a city and comparing it to where you came from and being negative about it is very easy. Especially if you're coming from AA and MI, both of which have great cultural scenes, beautiful natural resources, and things you can't find anywhere else.
