(BTW, I'm setting Bobby Jones aside for this discussion -- different era, way different equipment.)
I'm assuming Tiger keeps playing for a while, maybe even wins a few tournaments if he's lucky, but never sniffs another major.
Peak Tiger was something to behold. When he was on, he was so utterly dominant. Winning the 2008 Open at Pebble Beach basically on one leg was one of the greatest competitive feats I've ever seen. I'm too young to have seen the Bear at his peak; I have childhood memories of him winning the '86 Masters, that's about it.
As things stand today, I think you have to give the nod to Nicklaus; while his peak might not have been as dominant as Tiger, his sustained his peak for much longer. And you can argue that Jack's rivals during his peak -- first Arnold Palmer, then Trevino and Player, then Watson -- were stiffer competition than what Tiger faced when he was racking up many of his majors (no Rory yet, Mickelson still getting his act together, David Duval flaming out spectacularly after his brief run of greatness, Sergio never living up to the hype).

play very well into his 50's plus being the games ambassador for the last 3 decades. Can you see Tiger doing that?
Even if Tiger breaks the record, those who remember will always hold Jack to a higher level.

He won at Pebble in 2000.

Hear hear...
I've been saying this for years. I saw Tiger actually push a kid in a similar situation.
Karma is a bitch!

Had the same thing happen to him when he was about 9 at the Buick in MI. I've always thought he was dick.

...the tour consensus is that he's never been the same due to human growth hormone, in the early years. Anger issues, injuries, and a "bulking up", were a couple obvious ones. Regardless, his swing never was the same after he bulked up.

The PGA Tour began their drug testing program the week after his US Open victory over Rocco Mediate. They only test those who play. He took 9 months off after that win. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Has not won a major since.

you want me to list all the times Tiger has been accused of faking an injury on the golf course or can you look it up yourself?

The loss of flexibility is such an old shool thought on PEDs. Since you guessed my golf ability, and you're wrong, I am going to guess you are not young. The flexibility myth is just not true. If it was then why would Tiger and so many other golfers spend so much time working out? Read "Game of Shadows". There was a time when baseball purists said PEDs wouldn't help you hit home runs. I don't think anyone feels that way now. In addition to muscle gain PEDs can improve your vision and your recovery time. Obviously these would help any pro golfer (or any athlete for that matter). A quicker recovery time allows atheletes to work out in ways that before werenot manageable because you would carry over muscle ache and stiffness, not anymore. Know what happens to athletes who abrubtly go clean? Lots and lots of weird and nagging injuries. Sound familiar? Again, maybe all a coincidence, maybe not.

Called life. He fucked up his family by pillowing every ho he could get his hands on and was about to sign with viagra before his game left him completely. Doesn't matter how famous or rich, you lose people you love and priorities become very clear. Second chances, not so much.

is between his ears. Needs to hang around Pete Carroll. Too bad too as Tiger could have broken all the records if he had kept his head screwed on.

this is his first real competition since the change last fall. He's been gushing about how much further he's been hitting it the last few weeks. The guys has barely played competitive golf for a year.
relax man, he'll be fine
Jack won one major from the age of 35 to 40

Tiger Woods is the Janice Dickinson or Meg Ryan of golf. All were born with incredible gifts - Tiger at golf, the ladies at looks. But these perfectionists couldn't handle only being in the top .0001% of their talent vertical so they all kept cosmetically tampering with their gifts until they are now unrecognizable. Dickinson's excuse is she's an insane model, and Ryan is an actress so she's probably pretty zany too.

since he is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and he has played golf every waking moment of his life up until now, he is simply bored and his heart isn't in it anymore.
I mean, how much of one sport/lifestyle can you take?
Here it goes......he has lost the "eye of the Tiger", so to speak /s
If I were him, I would be interested in doing anything BUT golf for the rest of my life, but then again I am not a big fan of the game to begin with.

that I read years ago when Tiger was in his hayday. I am not sure what the question from the reporter was, but I think it was about Tiger catching his win total for majors. Jack said some very nice things about Tiger and then added: "Let's see how well he does once he marries and starts raising a family." It was an odd statement and kind of surprised me at the time, but I think it has proven to be somewhat prophetic, if not spot on.

The talent on tour these days can absolutely rival the late 60's early 70's (Nicklaus, Palmer, Hogan, Snead, Trevino, Ballesteros, Player etc..) These days every single player in the field can win on any given week.
Tiger came out of a cannon and started blowing the ball 40 yards past everyone in the game. He was playing courses that weren't suited for this and he just completely overpowered them, and intimidated every player on tour who wasn't ready for this.
The PGA to combat this started setting up courses that were so long, Tiger was literally one of the only people in the field who could compete on them. Now the field has caught up to the course set ups.
Now he's facing an entire field that hits it just as long as he does, and is not afraid of him anymore. Combine this with injuries and lack of confidence, and you have the Tiger Woods of today.
January 30th, 2015 at 4:45 PM ^
You put the Tiger Woods of the early aughts head-to-head with any of the players on any of the courses today and he would still be a dominant force, and probably the best player out there. Yes, the field has caught up, but it's a combination of a stronger field AND the downgrade in Tiger's play (for whatever reasons). You take one of those elements out of the equation (either the field hasn't improved or Tiger sustains his previous level of play) and he's still the best golfer in the world.

grip it and rip it. He's become waaaaay too technical over the years, thinking he should be able to control the golf ball the way we can when we have controllers in our hands. It's just not possible. He's thinking too much, trying to be too perfect. He just needs to go out there and "Nuke LaLoosh" it. One of the best things my golf coach ever told me was that I needed to stop "paralysis by analysis" trust my game and "see ball, hit ball". ESPECIALLY with the short game. The short game is more of a feel than anything else. If you're specnding too much time in between your own ears, you'll be spending a lot of time swearing after chunked shots.
He should ease up and try and have some fun. Quit worrying about the major record. He has enough money to last 100 lifetimes. He should go out there and play with "house money" because at least then if he shoots an 82, he can have a sense of humor about it.

I believe he felt invincible before the Elin debacle. I'm sure he thought he'd never get caught. Perhaps that superhero sensibility - the one that made him almost unbeatable - withered away when he realized he was fallible.

He hasn't been the same since all his marital problems started. Between that and his injuries, he's not mentally or physically the same golfer he was. And I think most of it is mental. A confidence thing.
