OT: What is BattleFrog and why is UM not so good at it?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

I noticed this year's Fiesta bowl is sponsored by BattleFrog and after Googling I found out it was a collegiate sports competition earlier this year that included 16 schools (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefrog_College_Championship).

Unfortunately, I also noticed that UM finished last by a wide margin. I think we need to raise BattleFrog awareness so we can win it next year.

Did anyone watch this series? Was it any good? Is there a specific reason we did...not so well?

I have no idea what it is. But I do remember that George Costanza went to great lengths to have his high score on the video game Frogger preserved, going so far as to having a temporary power supply and panel truck arranged to take it to his house. I hope this helps...

To answer your last question without too much snark.... Have you seen the rec league competition at UM? If not, just imagine the kids who took all AP classes in high school in an environment they are most certainly not suited for.

This is not new for water polo. Back in my day (84-87) I played on the club team; "played" being a euphemism for lightly used bench scrub. We were generally top 2 or 3 in the Big Ten, which was all club level teams. We had some excellent players with high school experience from schools like Ann Arbor Pioneer. The women's varsity team has been doing great lately--Michigan and Hawaii are the only non-California schools to get in the top ten with some regularity. In the 80s we had some polo loving women who would play with the guys, and they were pretty good. In short, Michigan has a heritage here too.

It's a very difficult Nintendo game. We're probably not good at it due to lack of experience w/ 8-bit gaming systems amongst the current team. I suggest putting a little more effort in recruiting 35-40 year olds with eligibility and we'll be just fine.

BattleFrog is the brand name of the obstacle courses. The show is colleges competing on those courses. Like if there was a "Crossfit College Challenge."

Like most of ESPN's programming, I didn't watch the show or even know it existed...

It's Obstacle Course Races (OCR). Anyone can do it. Just like tough mudders, Spartan races etc. Battlefrog is different because it was made up by military men so the obstacles a runner has to endure is all military inspired. Pretty sweet, I just did my first one this past summer in Miami. It definitely is hard.
