OT: What are your Top 5 life moments?

Submitted by Abomb4480 on
Playing off of an earlier thread, curious to know, what is your top 5? Mine: Marrying my wonderful wife. Birth of my children. The day I was hired for my first "real" job. Leading my basketball team to its first title in many years (as a coach). The day Harbaugh finally came home. What are yours? By the way, I'm not much of a fan of WD, but c'mon, who are any of us to tell someone else what the most important days in their lives are?

1. Birth of my triplets. Just the relief to see that they and my wife, who is Type 1 diabetic, made it through safely. 2. First date with my wife (no, I didn't score). A lot of people will say their wedding day, but for me it was when I knew that I had a connection with this person. We were both transplants to a new city, and we talked over drinks for 4 hours. Was a good night. 3. Michigan acceptance letter. It was my childhood dream, and I didn't apply anywhere else. 4. Winning a regional spelling bee to make it to DC. I did the "dirty bird" dance after I won. 5. The Braylon Game. Roommate and I were jacked (and hoarse) after that game.

1. Life-changing event that falls under the forbidden religious category here. 2. Marrying my wife 3. Kids born (4 day tie) 4. Graduation week, which featured: Graduating from college; leaving my hospital job that required 2 hours of commuting per day (in addition to school) with a kind send off from coworkers; preaching to a congregation of 3000 plus another 10,000 live streaming; moving away from California; meeting my future brother-in-law, and the next day walking my sister down the aisle at her wedding (in North Carolina). Bonus: ordained the next week. 5. Hard to narrow down any number of other special events. First football game with my Dad? 1997 UM-OSU? Mackinac island day with my wife? Buying our first house? It's a logjam.

I'm sorry, but these comments don't truly represent who I am, as a father and spouse. A real top 5 would be:

-Daughter tearing through wife's vagina like a wet St. Bernard. For some reason.

-Closing on the Mortgage.

-Scoring first TDas a FB in 6th grade.

- The Ball and Chain!

- Every Michigan Win. Ever.

What sucks is that it is going to be my problem for a while.  We have four kids, the youngest will be 5 in a month.  The oldest two know exactly what their mom did.  They heard her and I arguing one night and it's been really hard on them.

becoming President again in 2012, the day I shook Ronald Reagan's hand on Red Square, winning the Crimea referendum, and though it hasn't happened yet, I'm reserving a spot for November 8th just in case.

1.) the day I married my wife.  not to get overly dramatic but the ability to fall in love, stay in love, and create a loving family changed my life...

2.) my son was born first.  And actually the best day wasn't him being born but rather the day we told everyone. Love, love, love.

3.) my daughter was born second.  she was born at 31.5 weeks and ended up being in the nicu for 10 days.  Specifically with her it was holding her in the cup of my hand to 'feed' her.  (feeding was basically through a tube)

4.) graduating from UofM... but actually the happiest moment was when I got accepted and in particular when I told one of my oldest friends.  We were headed in different directions, he is now serving life, and we both knew it. The love and support he shared with me will never leave me.

5.) One day when I was teaching I had some kids in class during lunch hanging out as they always did.  The conversation with one of my girls got real deep as she shared what it is like to grow up without parents.  I broke down. It was overwhelming to hear what she was going through, I had no idea because she covered it all so well.  The bond we shared with everyone in that room that day was powerful.

1-3 Birth of kids

4 Cheating by not picking one, but the times with classes and students... going away parties, dinner on a cliff in Santorini, championships, team bus rides, the girl who kicked cocaine, the girl who lived in your classroom while her family was disintegrating, talent shows, a 7th grader literally running down the hall to give you a hug... that stuff.

4.000001 Senior year of HS, spring, finally getting the girl I'd been in love with since 8th grade.

5 Getting the call from WOTC that they wanted me to write D&D books.

No kids, one loving relationship of 20 years counting and a work/play hard weird professional lifestyle. So maybe

+ trekking the Antarctic continent and climbing the glaciers there

+ alpine summiting several noteworthy mountain peaks

+ motorcycling solo and backpacking across various regions including W. Africa, S. America and rural former Soviet Union

+ racing others' yachts across the deep oceans in life or death situations as a team

+ thousands of parachute jumps various disciplines including the Swiss Alps.

Somewhere in there or elsewhere I can come up with five. There are more, including being bundled under a dozen blankets in a horse-drawn sleigh on Christmas Eve and quietly trotted through the snow in Austria's national park near Bad Hofgastein with picture perfect full moon, snow-covered giant firs, stags, gurgling brooks, candle-lit shrines to miners and church choirs singing in the background.

How to assess, I admit that I've been lucky in some respects. I hope to enjoy future similar good luck.
