OT: Was your HS good at football?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Where did you go to HS and were they any good at football?

I went to Utica HS in Macomb County. They were not good have never won a playoff game. Only 4 playoff appearances and no state titles despite being one of the oldest teams in the state.

They do play Romeo HS for a Little Brown Jug that was started in 1948.

Curious to see what football pedigree some on the board came from and if it was big at their school.

My HS QB was Boomer Esiason. The guy before him also won a championship. Coach was Sal Ciampi, who had played football at Purdue. And yeah, I was in the marching band....

State runners-up my senior year (I did not play). Won a few state titles after I graduated, and was nationally ranked for a while.

Born in Michigan but grew up in Colorado.

My first 3 years, we had 2 wins total. My senior year we went 6-4 because a guy named Steve Szabo was our DC after he helped out at nearby Colorado State. He coached the linebackers at Michigan in 2006 when they had that amazing defense but also coached the Patriots, Jaguars, Boston college, you name it. He played with Roger Staubach at Navy and fought in Vietnam. I played outside linebacker and Szabo was an incredible coach - no nonsense. His two a days were ROUGH. Even at 70 years old he'd put the fear of God in you if you screwed up.

That was so much fun. Also three years ago.

Not as much West Michigan  representation on here as I thought there would be......  Kelloggsville HS 1991, O-K Blue conference and we were horrible.  We had like 12 guys on the team so 11 of us never came off the field and the other guy really sucked.

Went to Heritage 1998-2002. We were terrible in football up until I got into high school. Made playoffs and had a few wins but never went really far. Produced Stu Schweigert and Mike McFadden. Remember 15,000 people packing our school stadium for games against Saginaw High. Fun times

State champs my senior year. We practiced at UMs indoor football facility which was as much a thrill for me as playing in the Silverdome.

No, not really that good, but awful either. Never played either. Was more of a partier and didn't respect authority a great deal in high school. Baseball coaches were cooler.

Patterson High School in Dayton, OH. We were very good at every sport. Dunbar was and is the toast of the Dayton City League but Patterson was the only school to give them fits in basketball and football.

Kalamazoo Central Maroon Giants was never good in football my first year didn't win any games. I think they only won 4 or 5 games when I was there in a season I think they won a couple of state titles in 50's. Basketball have done better there won back to back state titles in 2010 & 2011. Famous Athletes Derek Jeter 5 Time World Series Champion & Greg Jennings wining Super Bowl 45.

Rural northern Michigan.  No, we were not good.  About a decade after I left they won the D5 state title.  They have since regressed back to being not very good.

Play a school named Suttons Bay for the "Little Brown Jung."

Better known for it's basketball.  Usually good to average in football.  When I attended we were coached by former UofM player Jerry Dutcher, who played under Bo. The school also produced UofM LB David Harris.

we were good, but we only made the playoffs once.  That was a function of (a) smaller playoffs for most of the time I was there, no 6-wins-and-you're-in rule just yet, and (b) having 5-4 type records, as we really struggled to compete against (much less defeat) the Catholic League heavyweights like St. Mary's, CC and Brother Rice.

We seriously had zero wins combined against those schools in my four years there.  My senior year, we DID make the playoffs.  Only to draw in the first round: Brother Rice.  Predictable how that game went..  :-(

Anyway, DLS struggled for a few years into the new century (2000s) , but then Coach Verska showed up and DLS has become a legitimate Catholic League and State powerhouse.  I was there at Ford Field when we defeated Muskegon Mona Shores for the state title last November.

We thought we were better than we were. I went to Toledo Saint Francis de Sales. We have won two state titles, one in the 80's and the other in 2001. We were always above .500 but when I went there we were in the Toledo city league with all the public schools which we mostly cakewalks. When we would play central catholic, saint johns Jesuit or whitmer (technically Washington local not Toledo school district) we would typically lose. One problem is that we had a long time head coach, who was great, but became very complacent season to season.

Recently the private schools created the TRAC with the better athletic schools in the area, we have since become terrible and get our ass kicked by almost everyone. Again we had a long time head coach that was a great coach but since he stepped down it has been difficult to fill the role. I think they are one their third or fourth head coach since 2007. Previously we had two in the previous two decades or something.

Waverly in Lansing MI.

Never had a great team that I can remember. Muhsin Muhammad did attend Waverly though.

Also the home of Marcus Taylor (never should have left MSU early), Danton Cole, and John Smoltz.

Known for speed and elite athleticism. Crazy thing is we have a better basketball program than football program, and the football team makes the playoffs every year. GO CATS!

Grand Blanc. Just OK. But Ingram was a freshman when I was a senior, so he did get to see a glimpse of his talent early on.

Traverse City -- 12-1 in 1975, lost to Livonia Franklin in first Class A state championship game at WMU. My younger brothers were on State Champ teams in 1978 and (I think) 1980 in the Silverdome. Great program under Jim Ooley, before they split into Central and West. St. Franny has always been good, contributing Joe Kerridge to current M teams, the brothers at that other school.

Graduated 1989 from Traverse City high school.  My freshman and senior years both Class A State Champs.  I only played my sophomore year though. 4 Trojans (Burkholder, Wuerful, Nadlicki, & Lobdell) from my class went to Michigan to play for Bo.  Since the split in 1997 neither West or Central has had a whiff of the title.

Now  I work for Traverse City St. Francis. A .756 alltime winning percentage for the Gladiators. We have won titles in 1992,1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, & 2009. Lost in the finals 4 or 5 times too.  Been there for Joey Kerridge, all the Bullough's, and Zakrzewski boys.  Last couple years have been down, sent a few boys to Hillsdale and a couple to Buffalo U. Josh Sellers is back as head coach this year though.

Short answer: Yes.

Slightly longer answer: Yes, about 25 years before I attended it.  When I was a student there, running the ball up the middle on 4th and 10 was pretty common.  Also, I would like to retroactively apologize for Gary Danielson.

I went to Divine Child in Dearborn for anyone wondering.

I am a proud alum of the Roeper School in Birmingham, a pipeline of Michigan students.

While we don't have an American football team...we did win a soccer state championship last fall.  So, to most of the world, we are good at football.

Mount Clemens High School graduate here (class of 1993).  Class B in Macomb County.  We had our ups and downs during my four years.  Our best player, a tailback, Damien Platt, went on to play at Illinois and did mostly KR duty in his 4 years in Champaign, IIRC.  Our big rival was Clintondale and those games got ugly.  We were more of a basketball school.

At one time no. 7 in the nation in all time wins and that was during a downward trajectory. We are no 1 in the great state of MI in all time wins. I'm guessing you can guess which school that would be: also produced one of the Big Ten's Icons, maybe two.

In a nutshell, uh, not very good. Usually can put about 25 or so 9th - 12th graders on the field. Played in the same league as Onondaga and Mike Hart (YTMH) rushed for about 400 yards on 6 carries against us.

A couple years ago, an Australian exchange student who had never played football before arrived in late August. Three weeks later, he was the starting quarterback.

And starting linebacker.

And kicker.

As class B school we dominated an all class A league. Ike Muhlenkamp is a legend and won consistently for 3+ decades. Much like Michigan, they tried to get with the times and bring in new blood and it was a disaster. Coach Uzelac (YTCU) restored the program and things are back on track. Mike Gillette and Rob Fredrickson both played there.

North Allegheny is located in a northern suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. NA has been powerhouse in football for most of the past decade. #1 HS nationally in 1990, won state championship four times, went to the state finals three times in a row recently winning two. Produced five NFL players. Historically was a pipeline to Penn State. Produced current Wolverine Patrick Kugler who should take over as the starting center in 2016. #1 sports school in PA in terms of state championships in all sports. We were terrible my senior year.

Played with and grew up with Marcus Freeman, went 2nd round of playoffs my junior year and lost to eventual state champagne Cincinnati Elder. I played offensive tackle that game and got ate alive by the defensive player of the year for D1 football Tony Carvetti. Never will I live down that time where as a junior in high school playing in the Cincinnati Bengals new stadium in front of 20,000 people. In the first round we played Cincinnati Moeller who had famous Bengals player Anthony Munoz son on the team, who beat in double over time when the QB for Moeller pitched the ball behind the running back and we recovered it. Wayne has been to state 3x in football ('99, 2010, and 2014) it's a always making the playoffs and making deep runs. I will forever be a Wayne Warrior bleeding that Red, White and Black
