OT: Video games with your kids

Submitted by Moleskyn on November 18th, 2020 at 4:00 PM

Assuming nobody actually wants to talk Michigan football during these difficult times, I've got a question for the dads (and moms) on the board: have you found any good video games that you are able to play with your kids? Preferably on PS4, as that is the platform I own. I certainly don't want to be creating an addiction for my kids, but as they are at an age now where they have the cognitive and motor skills to play something, I'm interested in using this as an avenue to have some fun with my kids.

My kids are older and no longer live with me but yea, we played Lego Star Wars and when they were older, Call of Duty.  Legend of Zelda on the N64, and Wii sports was fun.

We have a Switch and a XBox One. I have 11, 9, and 7 year old boys.

Mariokart, Smash Bros are great on Switch. Also play the Yoshi games and boys love Kirby.

Xbox we play Rocket League together alot. They love Minecraft. Also like playing Star Wars Battlefront.

Youngest loves the Lego games also! Marvel ones are great! Cant wait for new Star Wars one.

Everybody is talking about the games but not the ages. How old are your kids when you can start playing with them? Mine is only 4 so I think he’s still a little ways off. I know I had a sega by the time I was 6-7

If they are interested in puzzle games we had a ball  with Puyo Puyo Tetris. When my son had friends over (remember those days?) they liked Bomberman as four players can play together locally (8 online). Minecraft is endless fun for the creative types. My son is a teen now and prefers gaming with friends compared to boring Dad so enjoy these days.

You said PS4, but the reality is that the Switch is your best bet for a controlled environment that you can trust your kids to play by themselves and you to have enjoyment too.  I play quite a few games with my daughter on the switch.

Minecraft Dungeons is a good one to play with kids and is available on all consoles.  Here's a great site for finding games you can play with your kid no matter what system.  Click on Co-Op games at the top and filter the way you want to.  There's 5 pages of games listed for couch co-op on PS4 with an ESRB rating of everyone.

I'm in a strange situation. My kids don't realize I play games when they're in bed. I'm an addict, I play a little xbox/ps4 but I mostly flight sim on pc. Never introduced mine to videogames, they rather play legos or outside. They don't even watch TV, we do a movie every Friday night together. Mostly board games and puzzles. Doesnt help being married to a doctor, she doesn't want screen time for them much so we never push it. Weird family.

I used to play several games with my kids but they do are not interested in them anymore. I think it is not a common situation among nowadays kids. They started to go to the child early education Brooklyn https://littlescholarsnyc.com/. There is a list of classes they visit there and play lots of games, so by the end of the day they just want to tell us the story of the day. By the way, are all the daycare centers have such an interesting schedule? What do your kids do there?
