OT - Verlander Triple Crown/Tigers Open Thread
It was just announced that Jered Weaver will not pitch any more this season. That means that Justin Verlander will end the season with the best ERA (2.40), most wins (24), and most strikeouts (~7,000). Congrats to JV.
It also appears Miggy is going to win a batting title. He's got another double tonight.
3-0 Tigers, Middle 2nd.

Strikeout total wrong...it is closer to elevnty gagillion.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
most strikeouts (~7,000)
yep, pretty close.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
Pardon my ignorance, but how does he have 7000 ks? Didn't he start something like 35 games this year -- so wouldn't that be 200 Ks/game?

Too subtle for me, especially since you gave the other stats as real values. If you had said ~eleventy billion, then I would have gotten it.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
Noted.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:39 PM ^
So a figure that is 28x above the current number is still too close?
In that vein...
Michigan stadium was filled to the brim with 3,214,512 people for the game against ND!
September 27th, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
Seriously man? The Big House would have to be like, the size of Chicago or something to fit 3,214,512. Ann Arbor isn't even big enough to hold a stadium that big. Besides, I just googled it and there was 114,804 at the Notre Dame game. I suggest you get your facts straight or get out of here.
September 27th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
Well, that is about the number of people that will claim, years from now, to have attended the game on 9/10/11.

September 28th, 2011 at 12:41 AM ^
... of course by that #, you mean 3,214,513-- gotta save one for Fritz
September 27th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
7000 is subtle????? Nothing gets past you
September 27th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
He throws so quickly that he can pitch strikes to people in the past.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:47 PM ^
So that's what they've been working on at the LHC...
September 27th, 2011 at 8:18 PM ^
Did they just want to limit the innings on his arm for the future?
September 27th, 2011 at 8:25 PM ^
They didn't want him to have another one of those meltdowns that lead to a bench clearing brawl......
Oh wait, that's his brother...
Never mind.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:29 PM ^
Your "limit the innings on his arm for the future" seems spot on. From an ESPN LA article:
Manager Mike Scioscia feels it's important to honor the integrity of the playoff races, but has to watch out for his players, too.
"We have to look out for these guys moving forward to be able to do this again next year," he said. "We're going to try to go out there and win. There are tons of times during a season where a guy misses a start or is pushed back for a variety of reasons. This is one of those times. If we had maybe 10 more games left, you might see these guys pitch later in the week, but right now they're really on fumes and need to just take a backseat."
Also, to the OP: Weaver's first name is spelled Jered, not Jared.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:32 PM ^
and fixed. Thanks.
I knew that, too. I guess I'm subconsciously still mad at him for buzzing Avila's tower.

Betemit with a HR to deep right.
4-0 Tigres.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
Betemit just hit one about 425. Just bashed the shit out of it. Glad to see he's healthy.
4-0, los Tigres.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:25 PM ^
The story line for me is the return of Wilson Betemit. He has been out since like August 16th or so, and his status was highly equivocal. With all due respect to Bradon Inge, Betemit is swinging a better bat right now, and with him back in the line-up there are fewer holes.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:39 PM ^
September 16th.
September 27th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
It's not very hard to swing a better bat than Brandon Inge.
September 27th, 2011 at 10:33 PM ^
My favorite picture of Inge:
September 27th, 2011 at 10:05 PM ^
has been dealing with a sore knee. Hopefully, it won't be a major issue going into the post season.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:29 PM ^
So who are we rooting for? Rays to beat Yanks or Boston to beat Orioles? I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yankees roll over to help ensure the Sox get eliminated from post-season contention. I would rather face the Rays in the playoffs, if I had to choose.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
I'd rather face the coldest* team in baseball (the Red Sox), especially with their lack of rotation depth. At the same time, it would be really fun to watch them finish their Yakety Sax conclusion to the season by missing the playoffs.
*Okay, so the Twins are probably colder. But you get my point.
September 27th, 2011 at 9:10 PM ^
I can see that argument. Upon further reflection, I also think I'd rather have our hitters teeing off at Fenway, instead of the Trop (which is considered the second least-friendly hitters park in MLB.) It just feel like, even with their meltdown, Boston has more weapons and a higher ceiling than Tampa and if that slip gets switched, they could be real dangerous.
September 27th, 2011 at 11:56 PM ^
The team that plays outdoors has a higher ceiling than the one in the dome. Seems obvious to me...
September 28th, 2011 at 12:38 AM ^
I see what you did there.
That being said, I would much rather them both win tomorrow, or both lose, and play in a 1 game playoff. If Price throws tomorrow (he should) he will be out for game 1, and I would imagine Beckett would pitch on short rest for the 1 game playoff as he is the Ace. That would leave both Aces out for the first game which would be HUGE!
On the other hand, they could just as easily be playing Texas since the Angels appear to be laying down for them to have an easier route to the World Series.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:32 PM ^
This takes away the dilemma that Tigers fans would have been facing for Weaver's last game of the season. I was worried it would come down to seeing Weaver get the win (and possibly the league ERA title) and have the Rangers (who they are playing lose), or have Weaver pitch terribly (saving Verlander's triple crown) but risking another win for the Rangers, which could take away the possibility of us having home field advantage.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:36 PM ^
I just would have cheered for both offenses to dominate, leading to a win in extras for the Angels (and thus a ND for Weaver).
September 27th, 2011 at 8:41 PM ^
But it isn't terribly likely, given that LA's offense is fairly mediocre and Texas has one of the best lineups in the league.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:41 PM ^
We don't have to worry about that situation any more at least.
September 27th, 2011 at 8:57 PM ^
Fuck ND.... oh my bad, just a natural reaction when I see those letters.
September 27th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
Miggy gets #30.
September 27th, 2011 at 10:01 PM ^
+ batting title + ellsbury mistakes + caught up to Bautista in OPS= MVP?
September 27th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
Tyler Chatwood to start in his place. Damn you Scioscia!!!!
September 27th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Was it just my imagination, or did Rod pretty much call Miggy's homerun when he saw where Cleveland's catcher was set up?
September 28th, 2011 at 12:09 AM ^
Rod is a surprisingly sharp dude. Behind the goofy expressions and the drawl is a really, really good baseball mind.
September 27th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
I think you're kinda missing the forest for thr trees. Who cares about ERA The llarger issue that the Angels, by scratching their two best starters, are screwing the Tigers' chances to gain home-field advantage.
September 27th, 2011 at 10:53 PM ^
Pioneer grad, and former Michigan pitcher/dh/star/etc Zach Putnam just came in and threw a 1-2-3 inning. He struck out Inge (anyone can do that), but also got Miguel to hit a harmless fly ball to center field.
September 28th, 2011 at 12:01 AM ^
God. Texas can't lose, man. This sucks.
Didn't have to come down to this.
September 28th, 2011 at 1:50 PM ^
That seemed close, after he gave up like 5 runs (?) the other night. Wasn't he only winning ERA by a small margin?
Also, did he get the crown in the whole MLB or just the AL? if it's the MLB he's like the 9th or 10th person to do it. amazing.
September 28th, 2011 at 3:05 PM ^
JV had the most wins (24) and strikeouts (250) in the majors, however Kershaw (the NL triple crown winner) had an era of 2.28 to Verlander's 2.40. We also have the batting champ and the leader in saves. Come on postseason!
