OT - USMNT v Mexico in Columbus

Submitted by alum96 on

There will be soccer played tonight in the heartland of Ohio.  A very desperate Mexico team, sporting 8 points in qualifying will come play the good guys.  What was once unfathomable - a Mexico squad not qualifying for the World Cup - is now on the table, as Costa Rica, US, and Honduras are ahead of the team, with Panama only 1 point behind.  Mexico will be desperate and the U.S. will be lacking it's best player, Mr. Bradley. The atmosphere should be electric...positively "Seattle-like".  If only they had let me win the lottery for tickets - not that I am bitter.... (ok I'm bitter).

1. Mexico had the most energy in the first 20...

2. We had more possession.

3. Great halfs from Howard, Johnson, and Gonzalez.

4. Need the ole reliable counter from Landon to produce a big opportunity.

5. If we can score first this thing gets crazy as Mexico is mentally oh so fragile...

Fourth 15 minutes tilt US way with a goal.  Mexico seemed staggered for first 5 minutes after goal, starting to wake up after.  Every minute from here the vice tightens.  Expect a lot of "11 behind the ball" from U.S. now.  A Honduras win tonight combined with Mexico loss could spell disaster for our friends from the south.  Also they wear 2 ugly colors - red & green.

Fifth 15 minutes, just a lot of play in between the two boxes which is fine for the U.S.  Mexico simply does not look dangerous here. U.S. playing conservative, spreading Mexico out and playing keep away when possible.  Desperation should be intense in last 15 for Mexico but the playmaking ability is just not there.  EJ seems to have a head issue, Mix in - Dempsey goes up top.

Just demoralizing action for Mexico, as 2 of the top 4 attacking players for U.S. not even playing tonight.  Mexico looks useless in 2nd half.  Landon gets a yellow card for delaying time on throw in.   If you took Mexico's uniforms off after the first 30 minutes, you could throw in Jamaica's players tonight and you wouldn't know the difference.

Costa Rica scored late against Jamacia, and is up 1-0 in the 90'... so we can't take over the #1 spot in the table.  Meanwhile, Honduras is up 1-0 on Panama near the half.

By my observation, it looks as if Mexico is headed to the playoff for the last spot with New Zealand.

***EDIT: AAAANNDDD as I say that, Jamacia tyes Costa Rica late.  1-1
