OT: underrated movies

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on March 9th, 2020 at 12:32 PM

With a small lull in college basketball for the next few days, I thought I’d post something OT.

So, I watched the movie Predestination last night and thought it was a fantastic movie. Way underrated!

I also would put Sunshine in this category as well.  This a Danny Boyle film with a lot of stars, but didn’t do much at the box office.

So what say you MgoPosters? What’s an underrated movie you recommend.

Underrated is a nebulous term, but here are some off-the-beaten-path selections.

  • Pépé le Moko (1937) - precursor to Casablanca and the mother of all film noirs
  • The Tao of Steve (2000) - Donal Logue! Try it if you liked High Fidelity.
  • To Live and Die In L.A. (1985) - early Willem Dafoe
  • Electra Glide in Blue (1973) - quirky
  • McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) - classic Altman you never hear about anymore
  • Mindwalk (1990) - Only if you like My Dinner With Andre

I say this is underrated only because 8 times out of 10 that I reference it, no one seems to have heard of it.  Grandmas Boy.  Specifically Grandmas Boy Unrated is one of the funniest movies if not the funniest movie I've ever seen.

A couple of Bruce Willis movies for me.

#1 Lucky Number Slevin - with the cast that it has, I have no idea how it's so under the radar, but the action and comedic effect combined with how the plot comes together is amazing.  Extremely violent, but a must watch if.

#2 The Whole Nine Yards - I think one of my all time favorite comedies but rarely ever see it mentioned.
