The SEC has lots of teams with the ability overall to win titles, but rarely do they actually have more teams in a given year that are title contenders than other conferences. The problem is the SEC is given credit for Auburn winning a title 10 years ago or Florida winning a title 15 years ago when it's been all Alabama or Georgia for the last 6 years besides LSUs one spectacular year.

"Been all Alabama and Georgia for the last 6 years besides LSUs one year" --- taking a step back, isn't that pretty darn good???  3 different SEC schools scaling the mountain, all in 6 years?  (FWIW, Texas A&M, Florida & Tennessee also have NYD6 wins in the last 6 years)

Anyway.  I'm not an SEC-homer, but here are some more stats (in addition to the already relevant ones the previous poster provided):

  • The SEC has won 10 straight CFP semifinal games, they are undefeated in CFP semifinals from 2015-2022.
  • The SEC is 14-3 overall in CFP games, when they're not playing each other.
  • 3 separate SEC schools have won CFP games.  No other conference has had more than 1 school win a CFP game.
  • 3 separate SEC schools have also won the CFP title.  No other conference has had more than 1 school win the CFP title.
  • In the BCS era (e.g., prior to the CFP era), the SEC had 5 separate schools win a BCS Title Game (16-year era)
  • In that BCS era, only one other conference had even 2 separate schools win the BCS Title Game, and only one other conference had 3 separate schools make the BCS TItle Game (Big XII in both instances).

IMO, the SEC simply has been better and deeper than any other conference for a good 20 years now.  IMO, it's not really debatable.

Not trying to be mean, but I think that's nonsense.

If your hypothesis were true --- the SEC would have a below-average record in the CFP and NYD6 games.  If your hypothesis were true --- they would get exposed on the field.  There's no hiding when it comes to on-the-field match-ups vs. the best from other conferences.

But this is what's happening:

  • CFP era: SEC is 14-3 in CFP games (when not playing each other), and 9-7 in other NYD6 Bowls.  Both above .500.  (Big Ten is 3-7 and 11-5, for reference).
  • BCS era: SEC was 8-1 in title games (when not playing each other), and 8-8 in other BCS Bowls.  One well above .500, the other at .500  (Big Ten was 1-2 and 12-13, for reference).

No doubt you are correct, but to paraphrase V.I. Lenin, 'college football is the opiate of the SEC states‘ people'. It is a distraction that obscures all of the other problems in those states when looking at education and other basic socio-economic quality-of-life measures. Instead of putting their energy and investment into improving their universities‘ ability to achieve their primary mission, they focus on athletics because reinforcing the average voter’s misplaced priorities that college football is more important for the economy than attracting better jobs with a better educated workforce is so much more emotionally satisfying for many of their lemming residents.

I will freely admit that this retort has a sour grapes/loser feel to it because those that cannot win often take their ball and go home or go off on a non-sequitur like the Ivies do when they use justify their disinterest in fielding FBS programs on the basis of preserving their academic integrity instead of just admitting that this is one sport that they cannot be truly competitive. But I think the analysis holds when you consider the broader context.

Related, I was down a Youtube rabbit hole recently and ended up watching the beginning of a Yale-Dartmouth telecast from 40 years ago. It starts with scenes from the tailgating at the Yale Bowl and it is EXACTLY what you would imagine it to look like in the mid-80s. Looked they walked off yachts, grabbed some caviar, got into a tweed jacket to dress down and headed to the game.

Yep, 5 seconds in and I'm good.

By the way, he apparently has a diploma on his wall that reads "Doctorate in Georgia Bulldogs Football" if you're wondering.

Ugh, sounds  like Skip Bayless or a Stephen A Smith on YouTube. Blowhard that adds nothing of value to a sports discussion other than random takes any casual fan could offer. Worthless.
