Navy Wolverine

So we get one day and you righties get the other 364....that sounds about right. Interesting to note that 1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were left-handed, 250% more lefties than the normal level of probability for the group. When I was a pilot in the Navy, I noticed that a disproportionate amount of my fellow pilots were lefties too.

There is a lot for us lefties to overcome in the world. We can't play the infield in baseball. Then there are scissors, notebooks, desks in schools, coffee mugs, can openers, spiral notebooks, binders, all that ink on your pinky when you write, firearms, constantly bumping elbows when you eat or write next to someone, measuring tapes, musical instruments. The whole world is rigged against us yet we still overcome. Happy Lefty Day!

Great-I guess it is my and my three brothers day. I only swing/bat left as does one brother. Another only writes left. The fourth brother bats and kicks left. So, between the 4 of us, we have "left" pretty well covered.

Many of the lefties I know are kind of mixed. I do most things left--bat (and golf, hockey, tennis), write, cut, eat, play pool, play guitar, etc. But I throw right and dribble/shoot right. Also kick right. One of my sons is entirely lefty, but kicks right. Just an observation--no idea what to make of it, or even if it is accurate.

I am also one of you. Only golf/bat left handed, everything else is right handed.

Ever notice that most golf courses seem to favor right handlers. Most courses play counter clockwise which puts the course boundaries, OB, on the left. The most common swing flaw is the slice, which is OB for us lefties. That is one reason why I worked very hard to eliminate my slice.

Lefty here (everything except dominant kicking foot for soccer and using scissors) and I've always loved it.  Wife is partially left-handed (writing & tennis, but throws and golfs righty), so I was a little disappointed when my son ended up right-handed. That being said, I still manage to love him.

My father, who grew up during the depression, was convinced he was born lefty but was forced to switch by his teachers.

I'm not a lefty, but you can take pride in that the likely overall strongest man to have ever lived up to this point in human history, Hafthor Bjornsson, is in fact a lefty. And yes that's Arnold he's making look puny.

In fairness, Hafthjor is in WSM and Arnold was Mr Olympia. Being shredded is a much different goal than being the worlds strongest. Someone hafthjors size couldn’t  compete as a body builder. They eat way too much and take way more roids. The training regiment is way different too. They’re not trying to work every supporting muscle to show off. They need raw strength, which includes a big “power” gut.

I wasn't really comparing muscle tone, just the sheer size of the lad. 6'9" and 440lbs as he was at in this picture is going to make 99.9% of humans look small, even most other strongmen.

They don't necessarily take more roids, it really depends on genetics. I compete in strongman and power lifting at an amateur level and know many other athletes and body builders, you'd be surprised how many take very small amounts and yet are stronger/bigger than others who take a ton.

My short lived lefty story:

When I was in Kindergarten I wrote with my left hand primarily but the teacher noticed I used scissors with my right. She had me stop writing with my left hand because she said “everything is easier this way.”

To this day I still am left hand dominant, but write with my right all because of that day.

My kindergarten story: the teacher noticed me holding crayons with my left hand. She alerted my mother to this behavior. They decided the best course of action was to hand me crayons to my right hand and see if I would switch.

When I got older, my mom told me this story, and also told me how a generation prior to this, the nuns would have taken a ruler to my knuckles to beat the devil out of my hands.

I do everything lefty except for golf and scissors, mostly because lefty versions of those were so hard to find when I was young. Once a habit forms, it’s hard to break.

US Presidents who were left-handed:

Harry Truman

Gerald Ford

Ronald Reagan

George HW Bush

Bill Clinton

Barack Obama

You lefties are in some pretty good company.

Fun fact: in the book of Judges, Ehud was annointed by God as He gave him the gift of left handedness, which meant he could strap his sword on his right hip and get past the bodyguards before slaying King Eglon.
